  • Simultaneous multiwavelength observations of the second exceptional gamma-ray flare of PKS2155-304 in July 2006

    • Aims. The X-ray-TeV connection and the evolution of the emitting particle population is studied in high-energy peaked BL Lac objects, by obtaining spectral information in both bands on sub-hour timescales. Methods. Simultaneous observations with HESS, Chandra and the Bronberg optical observatory were performed on the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 in the night of July 29-30 2006, when the source underwent a major gamma-ray outburst during its high-activity state of Summer 2006. This event took place about 44 h after the other major outburst of the night of July 27-28, which is known for its ultrafast variability. An unprecedented 6 to 8 h of simultaneous, uninterrupted coverage was achieved, with spectra and light curves measured down to 7 and 2 min timescales, respectively. Results. The source exhibited one major flare along the night, at high energies. The gamma-ray flux reached a maximum of similar to 11 times the Crab flux (>400 GeV), with rise/decay timescales of similar to 1 h, plus a few smaller-amplitude flares superimposed on the decaying phase. The emission in the X-ray and VHE gamma-ray bands is strongly correlated, with no evidence of lags. The spectra also evolve with similar patterns, and are always soft ( photon index G > 2), indicating no strong shift of the peaks in the spectral energy distribution towards higher energies. Only at the flare maximum is there evidence that the gamma-ray peak is inside the observed passband, at similar to 400-600 GeV. The VHE spectrum shows a curvature that is variable with time and stronger at higher fluxes. The huge VHE variations (similar to 22x) are only accompanied by small-amplitude X-ray and optical variations (factor 2 and 15% respectively). The source has shown for the first time in a high-energy peaked BL Lac object a large Compton dominance (L(C)/L(S) similar to 10) - rapidly evolving - and a cubic relation between VHE and X-ray flux variations, during a decaying phase. These results challenge the common scenarios for the TeV-blazar emission.

  • Recent developments of the meshless radial point interpolation method for time-domain electromagnetics

    • Meshless methods are a promising new field in computational electromagnetics. Instead of relying on an explicit mesh topology, a numerical solution is computed on an unstructured set of collocation nodes. This allows to model fine geometrical details with high accuracy and facilitates the adaptation of node distributions for optimization or refinement purposes. The radial point interpolation method (RPIM) is a meshless method based on radial basis functions. In this paper, the current state of the RPIM in electromagnetics is reviewed. The localized RPIM scheme is summarized, and the interpolation accuracy is discussed in dependence of important parameters. A time-domain implementation is presented, and important time iteration aspects are reviewed. New formulations for perfectly matched layers and waveguide ports are introduced. An unconditionally stable RPIM scheme is summarized, and its advantages for hybridization with the classical RPIM scheme are discussed in a practical example. The capabilities of an adaptive time-domain refinement strategy based on the experiences on a frequency-domain solver are discussed.

  • Predicting the future of our oceans : Evaluating genomic forecasting approaches in marine species

    • Climate change is restructuring biodiversity on multiple scales and there is a pressing need to understand the downstream ecological and genomic consequences of this change. Recent advancements in the field of eco-evolutionary genomics have sought to include evolutionary processes in forecasting species' responses to climate change (e.g., genomic offset), but to date, much of this work has focused on terrestrial species. Coastal and offshore species, and the fisheries they support, may be even more vulnerable to climate change than their terrestrial counterparts, warranting a critical appraisal of these approaches in marine systems. First, we synthesize knowledge about the genomic basis of adaptation in marine species, and then we discuss the few examples where genomic forecasting has been applied in marine systems. Next, we identify the key challenges in validating genomic offset estimates in marine species, and we advocate for the inclusion of historical sampling data and hindcasting in the validation phase. Lastly, we describe a workflow to guide marine managers in incorporating these predictions into the decision-making process. Predicting climate change impacts is of central importance in marine ecosystems that provide a major source of nutrition to global communities and this work must be based on a sound understanding of both ecological and genomic impacts. This opinion synthesizes knowledge about the genomic basis of adaptation in marine species, highlights the few examples where genomic forecasting has been applied in marine systems, identifies the key challenges in validating genomic offset estimates in marine species, and provides a workflow to guide marine managers in incorporating these predictions into the decision-making process.

  • Advanced Imaging in the Diagnosis and Response Assessment of High-Grade Glioma : AJR Expert Panel Narrative Review.

    • This AJR Expert Panel Narrative explores the current status of advanced MRI and PET techniques for the post-therapeutic response assessment of high-grade adult-type gliomas, focusing on ongoing clinical controversies in current practice. Discussed techniques that complement conventional MRI and aid the differentiation of recurrent tumor from post-treatment effects include DWI and diffusion tensor imaging; perfusion MRI techniques including dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC), dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI, and arterial spin labeling; MR spectroscopy including assessment of 2-hydroxyglutarate (2HG) concentration; glucose- and amino acid (AA)-based PET; and amide proton transfer imaging. Updated criteria for Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology are presented. Given the abundant supporting clinical evidence, the panel supports a recommendation that routine response assessment after HGG treatment should include perfusion MRI, particularly given the development of a consensus recommended DSC-MRI protocol. Although published studies support 2HG MRS and AA PET, these techniques' widespread adoption will likely require increased availability (for 2HG MRS) or increased insurance funding in the United States (for AA PET). The article concludes with a series of consensus opinions from the author panel, centered on the clinical integration of the advanced imaging techniques into posttreatment surveillance protocols.
