  • Clinical comparison of an electric-powered ionic toothbrush and a manual toothbrush in plaque reduction : A randomized clinical trial
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Dental Hygiene. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1601-5029 .- 1601-5037. ; 19:1, s. 93-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the plaque removal efficacy of a newly-developed electric-powered ionic toothbrush vs. a manual toothbrush.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Manual or electric-powered ionic toothbrushes were randomly assigned to 30 healthy volunteers divided into two groups (Phase I). After 2-minutes of brushing, all teeth surfaces were stained with a plaque staining solution, and blinded examiners performed scoring using the Rustogi Modification of the Navy Plaque Index. Plaque removal rate was calculated at the central incisors, first premolar, and first molar, as representative teeth, in the maxilla and mandibula. One week following Phase I, the same examinations were repeated in all subjects using another toothbrush (Phase II), as a cross-over design.RESULTS: Electric ionic toothbrushes demonstrated a significantly higher plaque removal rate than manual toothbrushes in the premolar and molar areas (p < 0.05). However, in the central incisor area, no statistically significant difference was observed.CONCLUSIONS: Compared to manual toothbrushes, electric-powered ionic ones were significantly efficient in removing plaque in the premolar and molar areas.

  • Revealing the Hidden Spin-Polarized Bands in a Superconducting Tl Bilayer Crystal
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 23:16, s. 7675-7682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interplay of spin-orbit coupling and crystal symmetry can generate spin-polarized bands in materials only a few atomic layers thick, potentially leading to unprecedented physical properties. In the case of bilayer materials with global inversion symmetry, locally broken inversion symmetry can generate degenerate spin-polarized bands, in which the spins in each layer are oppositely polarized. Here, we demonstrate that the hidden spins in a Tl bilayer crystal are revealed by growing it on Ag(111) of sizable lattice mismatch, together with the appearance of a remarkable phenomenon unique to centrosymmetric hidden-spin bilayer crystals: a novel band splitting in both spin and space. The key to success in observing this novel splitting is that the interaction at the interface has just the right strength: it does not destroy the original wave functions of the Tl bilayer but is strong enough to induce an energy separation.

  • A hypomorphic variant in the translocase of the outer mitochondrial membrane complex subunit TOMM7 causes short stature and developmental delay
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Human Genetics and Genomics Advances. - : ELSEVIER. - 2666-2477. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mitochondrial diseases are a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders caused by pathogenic variants in genes encoding gene products that regulate mitochondrial function. These genes are located either in the mitochondrial or in the nuclear genome. The TOMM7 gene encodes a regulatory subunit of the translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane (TOM) complex that plays an essential role in translocation of nuclear-encoded mitochondrial proteins into mitochondria. We report an individual with a homozygous variant in TOMM7 (c.73T>C, p.Trp25Arg) that presented with a syndromic short stature, skeletal abnormalities, muscle hypotonia, microvesicular liver steatosis, and developmental delay. Analysis of mouse models strongly suggested that the identified variant is hypomorphic because mice homozygous for this variant showed a milder phenotype than those with homozygous Tomm7 deletion. These Tomm7 mutant mice show pathological changes consistent with mitochondrial dysfunction, including growth defects, severe lipoatrophy, and lipid accumulation in the liver. These mice die prematurely following a rapidly progressive weight loss during the last week of their lives. Tomm7 deficiency causes a unique alteration in mitochondrial function; despite the bioenergetic deficiency, mutant cells show increased oxygen consumption with normal responses to electron transport chain (ETC) inhibitors, suggesting that Tomm7 deficiency leads to an uncoupling between oxidation and ATP synthesis without impairing the function of the tricarboxylic cycle metabolism or ETC. This study presents evidence that a hypomorphic variant in one of the genes encoding a subunit of the TOM complex causes mitochondrial disease.
