  • Innovativa elsystem i byggnader : konsekvenser för brandsäkerhet
  • 2019

  • Topographic atlas of cell states identifies regional gene expression in the adult human lung
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Single cell mRNA sequencing of the whole organ has become a popular technique to reveal rare types and subtypes of previously characterized cells as well as to distinguish and characterize gene expression of previously unknown cell types. Unsupervised clustering can reveal tens or even hundreds of variable genes that characterize cell types. Variation in gene expression is often observed within one cell type, and sometimes cannot be biologically explained without mapping of mRNA on tissue. In this study we aim to (i) map the majority of cell types of human lung, (ii) describe variability in their gene expression and (iii) relate this gene expression to cellular location and neighborhoods. Using three different spatial transcriptomics approaches, we mapped epithelial cell states of airways and submucosal gland, and defined cell type-unrelated gene expression variability along proximo-distal axis, including potential regulators and co-regulators of such cell states in the mesenchymal and immune cell niches. In addition, we mapped rare cell types, such as subtypes of neuroendocrine cells, ionocytes and tuft (brush) cells, revealing tracheal preference for ionocytes, and distal airways for GHRL-positive neuroendocrine cells. Finally, we used the created map as a reference for the diseased tissue from patients with stage II COPD and revealed perturbed cell states and COPD-specific imbalance of cell types, affecting immune and AT0 clusters.

  • The Cyanobacterial Uptake Hydrogenase : Regulation, Maturation and Function
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With accellerating global warming and pollution problems a change of energy regime is necessary. Solar energy offers a clean and unlimited energy source of enormous potential. Due to it’s intermittenet nature solar energy must be stored - ideally in the chemical bond of a carrier molecule. Hydrogen gas, H2, an energy carrier with water as only emission when used in a fuel cell, is considered to be the choise for the future. In this context cyanobacteria show promising potential as future H2 factories since they can produce H2 from solar energy and water. The main enzymes directly involved in cyanobacterial hydrogen metabolism are nitrogenases and hydrogenases. Cyanobacterial hydrogenases are either uptake hydrogenases or bidirectional hydrogenases and their maturation requires assistance of six maturation proteins and two hydrogenase specific proteases. In this thesis the transcriptional regulation, maturation and function of the cyanobacterial uptake hydrogenases were investigated in the filamentous, heterocyst forming strains Nostoc punctiforme ATCC 29133 and Nostoc sp. strain PCC 7120. Five genes, encoding proteins putatively involved in the maturation of the uptake hydrogenase were identified upstream the known maturation genes. Two transcription factors, CalA and CalB, were found interacting with the stretch of DNA forming the upstream regions of the uptake hydrogenase structural genes and the novel maturation genes. The expression of the uptake hydrogenase were  heterocysts specific and the specificity mapped to a short promoter region starting -57 bp upstream the transcription start point. In addition, the function of the uptake hydrogenase was inserted in a metabolic context. Among the proteases, a conserved region was discovered possibly involved in determining the hydrogenase specificity. This thesis has given valuable information about the transcriptional regulation, maturation and function of the uptake hydrogenase in filamentous, heterocystous cyanobacteria and identified new targets for bioengineering of mutant strains with higher H2 production rates.

  • 2019
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The solar energy business has developed rapidly in Sweden in recent years, but so far most companies and individuals have chosen to install solar cells on roofs. Another relatively unexplored resource that we argue offer potential and where we see an emerging trend for various solar solutions, is building facades. In contexts where lack of space prevents building new or standalone solar energy installments, facades can still be used for a range of purposes, e.g., generating renewable solar power and/or provide space for shading devices and thereby reduced demand for cooling. In the SOL:AR project we have investigated how a future digital visualization tool could make it easier for clients who are considering solar solutions, including categories of products like solar cells, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and solar shading. How could a digital tool give a quick insight into e.g., the profitability of solar cells or a solar shading solution on a certain façade, and how would these look aesthetically? A long term aim in the project is to stimulate the development of facades as a resource that opens for new opportunities for solar solutions. Through interviewing potential target groups like property owners and other key actors about their needs and requests regarding a digital tool, mapping out technical possibilities as well as legal and organizational aspects, we have investigated the prerequisites for such a tool. We have identified property owners as our primary target group, and in particular medium-sized property owners with commercial buildings, although there seems to be an increasing interest in solar solutions also in tenant owners’ associations and apartment buildings. In total, at least 30 people from property companies, trade organizations, solar energy companies, governmental agencies, and urban planning offices have participated in our interviews and workshops respectively and contributed their thoughts and needs about how a digital visualization tool could create value in the procurement of solar solutions for facades. The results from the study suggest that a digital visualization tool could create value for property owners if it triggers the interest for solar solutions early in a renovation-/rebuilding process; is easy to use for people regardless of role at the property company or tenant owners’ association; can provide an idea of how a certain solar solution would look along with an estimation of economic and environmental benefits (rather than exact calculations); can support the communication about solar solutions between property owners and tenants; can be used “in the field” at a certain building as well as in the office; is owned by a neutral actor and is free of charge for property owners to use. Together with insights from the technical state-of-the art mapping and legal issues, we have gathered these user-oriented insights in a list of requirements for a future tool. To conclude the project, we conducted a workshop with invited actors from the visualization and solar shading industry to secure the relevance of the technical requirement list and identify further important questions for a future development phase. Future challenges include identifying a neutral owner for the tool, identify a reasonable payment model, as well as implementing the tool step-wise while waiting for necessary technical advances in the area of augmented reality and 3D data respectively.

  • Effektiv renovering med solceller
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Installation of solar PV is a measure that can contribute to great climate benefits when renovating buildings. This report, which is the final report of the project "Optimized renovation for efficient PV roofs" (short called EST), describes how property owners can contribute to increased climate benefits by considering the possibilities with PV installations when planning to renovate a building. The focus of the work has been PV installation in connection with roof renovation, but facades, which are increasingly mentioned in PV discussions, are also treated and we also touch on solar shading and balcony fronts that are potentially interesting for solar PV integration. Climate benefit means a minimization of the greenhouse gas emissions that occur through the energy use in the building and in the production of the building's constituent building materials, and that the excess solar exported from the plant can replace fossil-based power production, see sections 2.1 and 2.2. Section 2.3 “Well-planned solar PV renovation” gives an overall picture of the challenges facing those who want to achieve the greatest possible climate benefit, challenges that are discussed in the following sections. In the project, we have investigated different ways of maximizing the size of a photovoltaic system based on what the roof of a building can accommodate, which means that the size is optimized with regard to the climate benefits. In general, this gives a different result than an economic optimization where the latter results in significantly smaller systems. The reason is that the sale of larger electricity production surpluses in this segment is currently not as profitable as replacing the electricity you buy, with self-produced electricity. Most research reports and guidelines on the topic of optimal plant size also stop at economic optimization, often without even mentioning the possibility of going further to increase climate benefits. In this project, we have basically done the opposite, without turning a blind eye to economic realities. In section 3, we deal with architecture, planning and permit issues and argue that the strategy we advocate also leads to better architectural solutions than state of the art. The focus has been on presenting several concept solutions that aim to maximize the utilization of the available roof space, see sections 4 and 5 and Appendix 2. Our motives for this are partly a feeling of high importance when it comes to accelerating the introduction of renewable energy production in the built environment. Another is a hope and a belief that politics and the market both contribute and will continue to contribute to a development that makes maximized climate benefit a much better deal for the plant owner than it is today. Section 6 briefly discusses a few different measures to increase the own use of the solar electricity one can produce, which enables building a larger facility while maintaining good finances. One of these measures — collective measurement of the apartments' household electricity - is dealt with in more detail in Appendix 3, which is a guide aimed at property owners. The project's initial hypothesis was that simultaneous renovation of roofs and installation of solar PV was an optimal approach. The results from more in-depth investigations of, for example, contract forms and tender documents in section 8 and from the seven case studies presented in section 9, have led to a more nuanced picture: • It may sometimes be better to install solar cells after the roof or facade renovation has been completed, but even if it is expected to take place later, there is every reason to take this future work into account when planning a renovation. Conversely, there are good reasons to think through your renovation needs if you are considering investing in a solar PV system. • In addition to renovating the climate shell of a building, renovation of the ventilation and electrical systems can also have a major impact on the technical and economic potential of a future PV system. • City planning and the building permit requirements for building-integrated solar cell solutions can sometimes be a major challenge when you want to maximize the solar PV surface on a roof in connection with renovation or extension, which is dealt with in section 3. In section 10, we finally discuss the experiences and results that the project has led to. We also describe four projects that in different ways pave the way for the continued introduction of solar PV in buildings and describe how the work in the EST project can be taken further in future projects.
