  • Assessment of stormwater pollution transport to swedish coastal waters
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Integrated Stormwater Management. - : CRC Press. - 0873718054 - 9781315894652 - 9781351082204 ; , s. 81-92
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies dealing with stormwater pollution transport on a local scale have been carried out in Sweden since the middle of the 1970s. 1-7 However, so far no investigation has aimed at determining the importance of stormwater pollution on a larger scale, involving a region or a part of the country. Such studies would provide the necessary background information for (1) developing a regional (nationwide) stormwater management policy, (2) quantifying the importance of stormwater pollution in comparison with other pollution sources, and (3) helping to set the priorities between different measures taken to reduce the pollution transport to receiving waters.

  • Tendenser och trender i tidskriften Vattens artiklar under 75 år
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Vatten: tidskrift för vattenvård /Journal of Water Management and research. - 0042-2886. ; 75:1, s. 7-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Journal of Water Management and Research (Vatten) celebrates 2019 its 75th anniversary with a special issue, republishing one article per decade from 1940 to 2010. In the present article, we summarize the development of Swedish water research and management based upon the material published in the journal. We read all issues of the journal, noting important trends, percentage of female authors etc. In total, 2015 articles have been published over 20,600 pages, written by 3,309 authors. During the first decades of the journal history, articles mainly dealt with pollution issues, manifested in, e.g., poor bathing water quality. During the 1950s and 1960s many papers described the expanding municipal waste water treatment with international outlooks, getting inspiration mainly from Germany. Acidification was a hot topic during the 70s and 80s. At the same time articles concerning storm water started to show up and subsequently increased in frequency. During the 90s and 00s wetlands gained popularity, which decreased again in the 10s. The first article on climate change was published already in 1987, but this topic did not become frequent until the 10s.

  • Search for decoherence from quantum gravity with atmospheric neutrinos
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Physics. - 1745-2481 .- 1745-2473. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutrino oscillations at the highest energies and longest baselines can be used to study the structure of spacetime and test the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. If the metric of spacetime has a quantum mechanical description, its fluctuations at the Planck scale are expected to introduce non-unitary effects that are inconsistent with the standard unitary time evolution of quantum mechanics. Neutrinos interacting with such fluctuations would lose their quantum coherence, deviating from the expected oscillatory flavour composition at long distances and high energies. Here we use atmospheric neutrinos detected by the IceCube South Pole Neutrino Observatory in the energy range of 0.5-10.0 TeV to search for coherence loss in neutrino propagation. We find no evidence of anomalous neutrino decoherence and determine limits on neutrino-quantum gravity interactions. The constraint on the effective decoherence strength parameter within an energy-independent decoherence model improves on previous limits by a factor of 30. For decoherence effects scaling as E2, our limits are advanced by more than six orders of magnitude beyond past measurements compared with the state of the art. Interactions of atmospheric neutrinos with quantum-gravity-induced fluctuations of the metric of spacetime would lead to decoherence. The IceCube Collaboration constrains such interactions with atmospheric neutrinos.

  • Modeling the Bight of Benin (Gulf of Guinea, West Africa) coastline response to natural and anthropogenic forcing
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Regional Studies in Marine Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-4855. ; 48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 400-km long coast of the Bight of Benin, formed by sand barriers and lagoons, is bordered to the east by the Niger River Delta and to the west by the Volta River Delta and is characterized by several coastal infrastructures, of which the most important are the deep water harbors of Lomé, Cotonou, and Lagos. In this study, an enhanced version of the CASCADE coastal evolution model was implemented in order to reproduce the evolution of the coast over the period 2000-2015, considering the presence of coastal infrastructure, inlets, and the reduced sediment influx from rivers. The model results showed simulated coastal response around the main coastal infrastructure in agreement with observed data. In addition, the validated model was used to estimate the amount of sediment needed to control erosion through beach nourishment downstream of the harbors. The impact of reducing sediment input on coastal evolution was investigated through model parameterization of the influx at the boundary. Overall, the model may be a useful tool for improving regional coastal policies in the Bight of Benin.

  • Morphological development of a small-scale beach nourishment in a non-tidal area
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Proceedings of the Coastal Sediments 2023. - : WORLD SCIENTIFIC.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combining hard and soft costal protection solutions can be an appropriate measure to enhance structure lifetime. This study aims to quantify the morphological evolution of the nourished stretch and adjacent coastlines. A small-scale beach nourishment has been performed in front of a rock revetment at site in Faxe Ladeplads in Zealand, Denmark. The overall objective is to learn more about the dynamics of small-scale nourishments in low energy environments. Monitoring techniques include repeated topographic (Trimble RTK-GPS, drone surveying) and bathymetric (single beam) measurements. To measure the hydrodynamic conditions two surface acceleration buoys deployed at -4 and -7 m water depth were used. Sediment volumes from nourishments of size 70,000 m3 and 20,000 m3 redistributed relatively quickly. The nourished material built up the cross-shore profile and a longshore bar in this area, and distributed sediments in the direction of the dominant littoral drift (SW). Results suggest that the morphological evolution of the nourishment is dependent on local hydrodynamic conditions and local geomorphology. These findings have implications for the main objectives of preventing wave overtopping onto an adjacent coastal road during extreme events and restoring a beach for recreation.

  • Multi-scale wave modelling; Field validation in Faxe Bay, Denmark
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Coastal Engineering Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Access to local nearshore wave climate conditions on a detailed spatial scale is important for many coastal engineering practices. These include assessing the flood risk of coastal infrastructure, designing coastal protection measures, and estimating sediment transport processes and wave run-up. The present study displays a multi-scale wave modelling approach using the numerical wave model SWAN (Booij et al., 1999) together with field data applied in the southern Baltic Sea. The main objective of the study was to investigate the possibility of employing a single wave model for seamless simulations over several scales in time and space, from offshore to nearshore, including the effects of grid size and resolution. Validation with extensive field data was a crucial part of the study.

  • Spatial and temporal wave climate variability along the south coast of Sweden during 1959–2021
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Regional Studies in Marine Science. - 2352-4855. ; 63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents 62 years of hindcast wave climate data for the south coast of Sweden from 1959–2021. The 100-km-long coast consists mainly of sandy beaches and eroding bluffs interrupted by headlands and harbours alongshore, making it sensitive to variations in incoming wave direction. A SWAN wave model of the Baltic Sea, extending from the North Sea to the Åland Sea, was calibrated and validated against wave observations from 16 locations distributed within the model domain. Wave data collected from open databases were complemented with new wave buoy observations from two nearshore locations within the study area at 14 and 15 m depth. The simulated significant wave height showed good agreement with the local observations, with an average R2 of 0.83. The multi-decadal hindcast data was used to analyse spatial and temporal wave climate variability. The results show that the directional distribution of incoming waves varies along the coast, with a gradually increasing wave energy exposure from the west towards the east. The wave climate is most energetic from October to March, with the highest wave heights in November, December, and January. In general, waves from westerly directions dominate the annual wave energy, but within the hindcast time series, a few years had larger wave energy from easterly directions. The interannual variability of total wave energy and wave direction is correlated to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index. In the offshore, the total annual wave energy had a statistically significant positive correlation with the NAO DJFM station-based index, with a Spearman rank correlation coefficient of 0.51. In the nearshore, the correlation was even stronger. Future studies should investigate the possibility of using the NAO index as a proxy for the wave energy direction and its effect on coastal evolution.
