  • Increased water transport in PDMS silicone films by addition of excipients
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acta Biomaterialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1742-7061 .- 1878-7568. ; 8:2, s. 579-588
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of new adhesive wound care products intended for an application over a prolonged time requires good water transporting properties of the adhesive for the maintenance of a suitable environment around the wound. The ability of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based silicone films to transport water has led to its use in skin pressure-sensitive adhesives and it would be advantageous to find ways for controlling or increasing water transport across PDMS films in order to be able to develop improved skin adhesives. In this study we present a way to increase water transport in such films by the addition of hydrophilic excipients. Three hydrophilic additives, highly water-soluble sucrose and the two superabsorbent polymers (SAP) Carbopol® and Pemulen™, were investigated. The effect of the excipients was characterized by water transport studies, swelling tests, scanning electron microscopy imaging and confocal microscopy. The cross-linked polymers, primarily Pemulen™, were efficient water transport enhancers, whereas sucrose did not show any effect. The effect of the additives seemed to correlate with their water binding capacity. For SAPs the formation of a percolating structure by swollen polymer was also suggested, which enhances water penetration by the higher volume fraction of areas with a higher diffusion constant (swollen SAP), leading to a faster transport through the entire film. © 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. • Rethinking User Involvement in the Front End of Healthcare Innovation
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to share insights from an empirical study within the Swedish healthcare system, based on a case study of the largest business unit of a Swedish medical technology company and its key customer segment. The study involving a Swedish medical technology company and three Swedish hospitals indicates need to move away from an archetypical, largely homogeneous view of the user, towards a more flexible, heterogeneous user perspective. Following from that insight the paper outlines a preliminary model aimed at improving the conditions of the firm for user involvement in the front end of healthcare innovation. In the proposed model, different users are brought to the foreground in different parts of the front-end innovation process. The research performed aimed at putting the business unit in a more beneficial position to involve users in the front end of innovation by increasing their understanding of a) which user types they actually have access to, b) which roles that different user types may take in the various stages of the innovation front-end.

  • The nonlinear behaviour of a pantograph current collector suspension
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1999 ASME Design Engineering Technical Conferences.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pantograph-catenary system is a critical component for trains required to run at higher speeds. The pantograph often includes nonlinear characteristics and the scope of this work is to investigate if nonlinear dynamic phenomena can occur in an existing design. A model of a pantograph suspension subsystem has been developed according to physical parameter values of the head suspension of the Schunk WBL88/X2 pantograph, providing electric power to the Swedish high-speed train X2. Studies of the system response for different force excitation show both harmonic, subharmonic and chaotic behaviour for the investigated parameter regions.

  • Cellulolytic enzyme interaction with lignocellulose. Insight to factors limiting enzymatic hydrolysis
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Gordon Conference: Cellulosomes, Cellulases & Other Carbohydrate Modifying Enzymes internal database.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Liberation of fermentable soluble sugars from lignocellulosic biomass during the course of enzymatic hydrolysis is the major obstacle to large-scale implementation of biorefineries due to high cost of enzymes. Enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass is often incomplete and, therefore, it is of great importance to understand the limitations of the process. Among the limitations of enzymatic hydrolysis, structural properties of lignocellulose have an effect of enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. Currently, there is a lack of direct methods for visualization and quantification of spatial polymer distribution in lignocellulosic biomass and monitoring of interactions between cellulose degrading enzymes and the substrate. The focus of the work was (i) structural characterization of lignocellulose during the course of hydrolysis and (ii) to provide a more detailed understanding of cellulolytic enzyme interaction with lignocellulose. The overall aim was to understand the limitations in enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass.Enzymatic hydrolysis was studied on industrial-like lignocellulosic and cellulosic substrates, resulting from alkaline pulping and steam explosion of spruce. Enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic substrates was compared to enzymatic hydrolysis of model cellulosic substrates. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the substrates was performed with commercial enzyme mixture Celluclast 1.5 L and also with designed enzyme mixtures, consisting of mono-component enzymes. The structural properties of the substrates during an incrementing time of hydrolysis were analyzed by solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Coherent Anti-Strokes Raman Scattering (CARS) and Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) microscopy. Hydrolysis products were verified by High Performance Anion Exchange Chromatography with Pulsed Amperometric Detection (HPAEC-PAD). Dynamics of the hydrolysis was analyzed by Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D) technique.

  • Tactical driving behaviour with different levels of automation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on intelligent transportation systems (Print). - 1524-9050 .- 1558-0016. ; 15:1, s. 158-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigated how different types of automation affect tactical driving behavior, depending on trust in the system. Previous research indicates that drivers wait for automation to act, delegating the monitoring of traffic situations. This would be especially true for those who have more trust in automation. Behavioral and gaze data from 30 participants driving an advanced simulator were recorded in four driving conditions, namely, manual driving, intentional car following, adaptive cruise control (ACC), and ACC with adaptive steering. Measures of trust in the systems were recorded with a questionnaire.Three fairly common traffic events requiring a driver response were analyzed. Trust in automation was high among the participants, and no associations between trust levels and behavior could be found. Drivers seem to make informed choices on when to let the automation handle a situation and when to switch it off manually or via the vehicle controls. If drivers did not expect the system to be able to handle the situation, they usually resumed control before the automation reached its limits. If the automation was expected to be able to deal with the situation, control was usually not resumed. In addition, situations were dealt with in a tactically different manner with automation than without. Controlling the car with automation systems is thus accepted by drivers as being a different undertaking than driving in manual mode.

  • How to develop fifth-generation district heating and cooling in Sweden? : Application review and best practices proposed by middle agents
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energy Reports. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 2352-4847. ; 9, s. 4971-4983
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden has an ambitious plan to fully decarbonise district heating by 2030 and to contribute with negative emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050. The vagaries of the energy market associated with climate, political, and social changes entail cross-sectoral integration that can fulfill these national targets. Fifth-generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC) is a relatively new concept of district energy systems that features a simultaneous supply of heating and cooling using power-to-heat technologies. This paper presents best practices for developing 5GDHC systems in Sweden to reach a consensus view on these systems among all stakeholders. A mixed-method combining best practice and roadmapping workshops has been used to disseminate mixed knowledge and experience from middle agents representing industry professionals and practitioners. Four successful implementations of 5GDHC systems are demonstrated and the important learned lessons are shared. The best practices are outlined for system planning, system modeling and simulation, prevailing business models for energy communities, and system monitoring. A roadmap from the middle agents’ point of view is composed and can be utilised to establish industry standards and common regulatory frameworks. © 2023 The Author(s)

  • Modelling and simulation of catenary-pantograph interaction
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Vehicle System Dynamics. - : Taylor & Francis Ltd.. - 0042-3114 .- 1744-5159. ; 33:suppl, s. 490-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modelling and simulation of the dynamic behaviour of catenary-pantograph interaction is an important part when assessing the capability of a current collection system for railway traffic. The large variation in infrastructure characteristics in different countries and railway companies, different types of traffic, designs of pantographs etc. makes it almost impossible to develop a final simulation model of such a system. Instead, it would be favourable to have a tool that has the ability to set up models of such systems, choose relevant detail of the models, run simulations and finally visualize the results. To make the tool useful for engineers, design experts as well as simulation experts, the functionality of the tool must be worked out. Aspects on computer simulation such as developed models, simulation methods and computer tools are presented. The aim is to develop a scenario that considers different designs, models, solution methods and user levels. The scenario focuses on how to structure the use of simulation of dynamics in catenary-pantograph development. A scenario is sketched built on different user levels, a modular structure and a structure for information management

  • Correlation between microstructure and fatigue properties of hot-rolled thick-plate complex-phase steel
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Science & Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-5093 .- 1873-4936. ; 885
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Complex-phase (CP) steels, with a multiphase microstructure, offer an excellent combination of high strength, ductility, and formability, making them an attractive alternative to conventional high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels in the automotive industry. However, the microstructure and fatigue property relation in CP steels is complex. This limits the full exploitation of CP steels in applications, such as heavy-vehicles, where excellent fatigue performance of thick-plates after punching holes is the critical parameter. In this work, we initiate the study of the relation between microstructure and fatigue properties of a commercial CP steel (800CP) and compare it with a conventional HSLA (500MC) steel. Fatigue property, tensile property, and fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) testing are conducted and the performance of the two steels is rationalized using detailed microstructure characterization, before and after fatigue testing. FCGR testing shows that, despite a higher yield strength of the 800CP, both steels have a similar propagation rate due to a more tortuous crack propagation path and a higher quantity of secondary crack formation in the 800CP microstructure. The high cycle fatigue (HCF) testing shows that the fatigue limit in the 800CP is 25% higher. This increase in fatigue limit is attributed to the improved resistance to fatigue crack initiation in the 800CP due to its larger fraction of bainite.
