  • Inventorying management status and plant species richness in semi-natural grasslands using high spatial resolution imagery
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Applied Vegetation Science. - 1402-2001. ; 13:2, s. 221-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Question Can we reliably estimate grazing intensity, indicators of grazing intensity (i.e. field-layer height and shrub-cover), and vascular plant species richness in semi-natural grasslands from high spatial resolution satellite data? Location The Baltic Island of Oland (Sweden). Methods Fieldwork included the on-site description of grazed and ungrazed areas and shrub-cover within 107 semi-natural grassland sites. Field-layer height and vascular plant species richness (total within-site and mean small-scale species richness) were recorded within the sites. Digital classification of QuickBird data was performed to identify grazed and ungrazed areas and shrub-cover. Vegetation indices were generated to analyze the performance of satellite data for estimating field-layer height, and the spectral heterogeneity was used to characterize the within-site environmental heterogeneity. Results The proportion of digitally classified grazed area explained 45% of the variation in field-layer height and 43% of the variation in shrub-cover. Field-layer height was significantly related to vegetation indices. A linear model with three explanatory variables (spectral richness(red), spectral richness(NIR), and shrub-cover) explained 47% of the variation in total within-site species richness. Conclusions High spatial resolution imagery may assist in the monitoring of the processes that follow the cessation of grazing, on the scale of individual grassland sites. Measures of spectral heterogeneity acquired by high spatial resolution imagery can be used in the assessment of total within-site vascular plant species richness in semi-natural grassland vegetation.

  • A particulate platform for bioluminescent immunosensing
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Analytical Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0003-2700 .- 1520-6882. ; 79:22, s. 8601-8607
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study examines pyruvate kinase-conjugated antibodies for potential use in EUSA applications. The conjugates had an acceptable stability, and the coupling inflicted only minor impairment on the kinase activity. To mimic the setup of an immunoassay under development, a test antigen (BSA) was attached to polystyrene nanoparticles. This arrangement was found to be suitable as solid support for presentation of antigens in sensitive bioluminescence assays. The nanoparticles were well characterized in terms of protein surface load and were used to establish the number of conjugate complexes needed to generate a detectable signal. Under the biochemical conditions employed here, the detection limit of the pyruvate kinase conjugate lies in the femtomole range.

  • Powerful protein binders from designed polypeptides and small organic molecules : a general concept for protein recognition
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : Wiley. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 50:8, s. 1823-1827
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-affinity binders for the C-reactive protein (CRP), with dissociation constants in the pM to nM range and selectivities in human serum comparable to those of antibodies, were obtained by conjugation of 16 designed polypeptides to phosphocholine, a small molecule that binds CRP with a KDvalue of 5I . The polypeptides were not designed specifically to recognize CRP and bind by an adapted fit mechanism.

  • Deliberation, representation, equity : research approaches, tools and algorithms for participatory processes
  • 2017
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • What can we learn about the development of public interaction in e-democracy from a drama delivered by mobile headphones to an audience standing around a shopping center in a Stockholm suburb? In democratic societies there is widespread acknowledgment of the need to incorporate citizens' input in decision-making processes in more or less structured ways. But participatory decision making is balancing on the borders of inclusion, structure, precision and accuracy. To simply enable more participation will not yield enhanced democracy, and there is a clear need for more elaborated elicitation and decision analytical tools. This rigorous and thought-provoking volume draws on a stimulating variety of international case studies, from flood risk management in the Red River Delta of Vietnam, to the consideration of alternatives to gold mining in Ro?ia Montana in Transylvania, to the application of multi-criteria decision analysis in evaluating the impact of e-learning opportunities at Uganda's Makerere University. Editors Love Ekenberg (senior research scholar, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis [IIASA], Laxenburg, professor of Computer and Systems Sciences, Stockholm University), Karin Hansson (artist and research fellow, Department of Computer and Systems Sciences, Stockholm University), Mats Danielson (vice president and professor of Computer and Systems Sciences, Stockholm University, affiliate researcher, IIASA) and Göran Cars (professor of Societal Planning and Environment, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm) draw innovative collaborations between mathematics, social science, and the arts. They develop new problem formulations and solutions, with the aim of carrying decisions from agenda setting and problem awareness through to feasible courses of action by setting objectives, alternative generation, consequence assessments, and trade-off clarifications. As a result, this book is important new reading for decision makers in government, public administration and urban planning, as well as students and researchers in the fields of participatory democracy, urban planning, social policy, communication design, participatory art, decision theory, risk analysis and computer and systems sciences.

  • Comparison between Chicken and Rabbit Antibody Based Particle Enhanced Cystatin C Reagents for Immunoturbidimetry
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of immunoassay & immunochemistry. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1532-1819 .- 1532-4230. ; 29:1, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have compared three commercial particle enhanced cystatin C reagents. One of the reagents utilizes chicken antibodies and the other two reagents are rabbit antibody based. We show that the chicken antibody based reagent yields a higher delta absorbance when reacting with the antigen. IgY coupled to latex particles show a strong scatter response even at high antigen concentrations in contrast to the steep decline in scatter previously reported for IgY antibodies in solution. The reagent also showed a low CV for duplicate samples. Laying hens thus seems as an interesting source of antibodies for particle-enhanced immunoassays.

  • Assessing costs and benefits of improved soil quality management in remediation projects : A study of an urban site contaminated with PAH and metals
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 707
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contaminants in the soil may threaten soil functions (SFs) and, in turn, hinder the delivery of ecosystem services (ES). A framework for ecological risk assessments (ERAs) within the APPLICERA - APPLICable site-specific Environmental Risk Assessment research project promotes assessments that consider other soil quality parameters than only contaminant concentrations. The developed framework is: (i) able to differentiate the effects of contamination on SFs from the effects of other soil qualities essential for soil biota; and (ii) provides a robust basis for improved soil quality management in remediation projects. This study evaluates the socio-economic consequences of remediation alternatives stemming from a Tier 1 ERA that focusses on total contaminant concentrations and soil quality standards and a detailed, site-specific Tier 3 Triad approach that is based on the APPLICERA framework. The present study demonstrates how Tier 1 and Tier 3 ERAs differ in terms of the socio-economic consequences of their remediation actions, as well as presents a novel method for the semi-quantitative assessment of on-site ES. Although the presented Tier 3 ERA is more expensive and time-consuming than the more traditional Tier 1 ERA approach, it has the potential to lower the costs of remediation actions, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, reduce other environmental impacts, and minimise socio-economic losses. Furthermore, the remediation actions stemming from the Tier 3 ERA were predicted to exert far less negative ES effects than the actions proposed based on the results of the Tier 1 ERA.

  • Analysis of the Formation Conditions for Large Area Epitaxial Graphene on SiC Substrates
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: SILICON CARBIDE AND RELATED MATERIALS 2009, PTS 1 AND 2. - : Trans Tech Publications Inc.. ; 565, s. 645-648
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We are aiming at understanding the graphene formation mechanism on different SiC polytypes (6H, 4H and 3C) and orientations with the ultimate goal to fabricate large area graphene (up to 2 inch) with controlled number of monolayers and spatial uniformity. To reach the objectives we are using high-temperature atmospheric pressure sublimation process in an inductively heated furnace. The epitaxial graphene is characterized by ARPES, LEEM and Raman spectroscopy. Theoretical studies are employed to get better insight of graphene patterns and stability. Reproducible results of single layer graphene on the Si-face of 6H and 4H-SiC polytypes have been attained. It is demonstrated that thickness uniformity of graphene is very sensitive to the substrate miscut.

  • Effect of Sulphur and Phosphorous Doping on the Growth Rate of CVD Diamond (111)
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose with the present study has been to theoretically investigate the effect of P (or S) doping on the diamond growth rate. The highly symmetric diamond (111) surface, terminated by H atoms, was thereby carefully investigated using density functional theory calculations under periodic boundary conditions. It was shown that both the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of P (or S) doping during diamond growth will be severely affected by the dopants (as compared with the non-doped situations). More specifically, the results showed that P (positioned within the 2nd, 3rd or 4th layer), will cause an enhancement in the growth rate. On the other hand, any growth rate improvement do only occur when positioning S in the 4th atomic C layer. With S in atomic layers 1, 2 and 3, the growth rates were observed to decrease. These observations did correlate with experimental results.
