- Background: Fatigue, pain, stiffness, impaired muscle function and impaired physical function are some of the most pronounced symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and these may be related to lifestyle habits such as physical activity, diet, smoking and alcohol.There is limited knowledge about how patient with longstanding RA understand their lifestyles habits in relation to their disease and quality of life.Objectives: To describe experiences of how lifestyle habits relate to quality of life in patients with longstanding RA. Methods: A qualitative study with a deductive content analysis design, including 17 patients from the Swedish BARFOT (Better Anti-Rheumatic FarmacoTherapy) cohort. BARFOT is a long time follow up study of early RA. Informants were strategically selected by gender (ten women and seven men), age (range 30-84 years), disease duration (8-23 years), function as measured by HAQ, and quality of life as measured by EQ5D. Semi-structured interviews focused on four lifestyle habits (main categories); Physical activity, Diet, Smoking, and Alcohol. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and coded into subcategories within each of the four main categories.Results: In patients with longstanding RA quality of life was related to the four given main categories (lifestyle habits). Each main category included two to three subcategories; (1) Physical activity means barrier, opportunities and well-being, (2) Diet means shame, well-being and social relationship, (3) Smoking means reward and fear, and (4) Alcohol means ambivalence and social relationship.Conclusions: In longstanding RA, lifestyle habits relates to quality of life through both positive and negative experiences. This has to be taken into account in clinical care for a better understanding of how patients conceive and adherer to advice on lifestyle.References: Scott DL, Wolfe F, Huizinga TW. Acceptance of Low-Carbon School Meals with and without Information—A Controlled Intervention Study

- This controlled intervention study focused on optimizing a school lunch menu to achieve a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The objective was to evaluate the impact of introducing a low-carbon menu on pupils’ acceptance of school meals, as well as to assess whether providing information about the menu change independently influenced pupils’ acceptance. The study was conducted across six compulsory schools in a Swedish municipality, divided into three groups: schools implementing a menu change only (Menu), schools implementing a menu change with clear information provided to pupils (Menu + Info), and control schools serving the standard menu (Control). During a seven-week baseline period, all schools served the standard menu. Subsequently, for seven weeks, Menu and Menu + Info schools transitioned to a low-carbon menu achieved through the utilization of low-carbon recipes—reducing the proportion of food items with significant climate footprints while maintaining the recommended nutritional standards. In Menu + Info schools, pupils were presented with an informative video about the menu change during class. The acceptance of the low-carbon menu was evaluated through daily measurements of food consumption, plate waste, and meal satisfaction surveys. The study’s findings revealed that neither the menu change nor the information significantly affected the pupils’ acceptance of the new menu. These results align with prior studies, reinforcing the viability of employing low-carbon recipes to reduce the climate footprint of school meals. Moreover, this study demonstrates that providing supplemental information for transparency or educational purposes can be implemented without adversely affecting menu acceptance.

Att göra flickors röster hörda : Om flickforskningens möte med historievetenskapen

- Den här sessionen handlar flickors röster i historien och om flickforskning i Sverige – specifikt flickforskningens möte med historievetenskapen. Den internationella forskningen om flickor och unga kvinnor, Girlhood Studies eller flickforskning på svenska, utvecklades under 1990-talet och fick en skjuts under 2000-talets första decennier inom forskning men också i politiska, massmediala och populärkulturella sammanhang.[1] Utgångspunkten var att den tidigare ungdomsforskningen varit genusblind, medan kvinnoforskningen saknat generationsperspektiv. Nu började genus och generation kombineras för att producera ny kunskap om flickor, kunskap om hur det talas om flickor, om hur flickor behandlas och om hur de upplever sina livsvillkor.[2] Gemensamt för det sena 1900-talets intresse för flickor på olika arenor var att det ofta handlade om flickor och om synliggörandet av flickor. Sedan millennieskiftet har forskningsfältet utvecklats både internationellt och i Sverige. Intersektionella analyser av flickor, flickdom och ung femininitet har genererat kunskap om flickor i historien men också om hur samtiden har sett på, uppfattat och behandlat flickor. Inom historieämnet har en rad avhandlingar om flickor publicerats under 2000-talet[3] och forskare har alltmer börjat intressera sig för flickors aktörskap och olika flickdiskurers uppkomst och innebörd.[4] De medverkande i denna session har forskat om flickor från 1800-talet till i dag, i skilda kontexter, med olika teoretiska utgångspunkter och metoder. Diskussionen kommer handla dels om vad som sker i mötet mellan flickforskning och historievetenskapen, dels om mötet mellan forskaren och flickorna i historien. - Through a historical lens, we can comprehend the evolving perceptions of children's mental health over the past four decades. This exploration delves into how different health issues concerning children and young people are spotlighted at varying times, shedding light on the dynamic nature of societal perspectives.Concerns about mental health in children and youth have surged since the 1990s across Western nations. Tracking the incidence of mental health issues over time proves challenging due to changing definitions, categorizations, and diagnostic criteria. Despite these challenges, studying temporal trends remains crucial. The conceptualizations of mental illness in this demographic mirror societal thoughts, patterns, and beliefs, providing insights into their respective eras.This study employs discourse analysis, examining discussions in Swedish medical literature from 1970 to the present. Contextualized within the evolving conditions of the late 20th-century Swedish welfare state, the research explores changes in societal dynamics affecting schools, school health care, child and youth health care, and the broader socio-economic landscape. The investigation focuses on evolving explanations for mental illness, shifts in issues raised, and media representations of girls' and boys' mental health.The findings reveal a consistent narrative depicting a continuous rise in mental illness and psychosocial problems, with higher rates of psychosomatic issues among girls. The discourse consistently portrays girls internalizing their ill health, while boys externalize psychosomatic symptoms through actions such as drinking or criminal behavior. Over time, explanations for the surge in mental health issues evolve—from biological gender differences in the 1970s to a more nuanced understanding in subsequent decades. The target demographic broadens from homogeneous groups in the 1970s to a heterogeneous one in later years, reflecting diverse health problems, symptoms, and needs. Gender awareness increases, with a notable shift in attention toward lifestyle factors influencing psychosocial problems and mental health, including stress, sedentary behavior, eating habits, and leisure activities like television and computer gaming.

- In the research project Youth mental health in Swedish medical literature 1970-2017, the view on the mental health of children and young people is examined from a gender perspective. The study examines how mental illness and psychosocial problems have been explained, whether questions, problems and explanations have changed over time, and how girls and boys' ill-health is presented. The ambition has been to gain in-depth knowledge of how medical knowledge relates to the historical context and interacts with other political and social discourses. The project has been carried out within the framework of the interdisciplinary Swedish national research program The three-cities study.
