    • The fate of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in soils and waters in a northern boreal catchment was explored through the development of a chemical fate model in a well-characterised catchment system dominated by two land types: forest and mire. Input was based solely on atmospheric deposition, dominated by accumulation in the winter snowpack. Release from soils was governed by the HOC concentration in soil, the soil organic carbon fraction and soil-water DOC content. The modelled export of selected HOCs in surface waters ranged between 11 and 250ng day(-1) during the snow covered period, compared to 200 and 9600ng/d during snow-melt; highlighting the importance of the snow pack as a source of these chemicals. The predicted levels of HOCs in surface water were in reasonable agreement to a limited set of measured values, although the model tended to over predict concentrations of HOCs for the forested sub-catchment, by over an order of magnitude in the case of hexachlorobenzene and PCB 180. This possibly reflects both the heterogeneity of the forest soils and the complicated and changing hydrology experienced between the different seasons.

  • Use of stable Mg isotope ratios in identifying the base cation sources of stream water in the boreal Krycklan catchment (Sweden)

    • The knowledge of the sources of base cations in stream water is a prerequisite to assess potential effects of changing environmental conditions such as changing rainfall, weathering or groundwater flows on cation export with stream water. This study use stable Mg isotopes to identify potential sources in the well-studied catchment of Krycklan located on gneissic bedrock covered by quaternary sediments in Sweden. Samples were collected from open filed rain, throughfall, stream, soil, rock and litterfall. The delta Mg-26 values of these samples was determined and the contributions of different sources to Mg fluxes in the stream were determined from the variation of the Mg isotope and Sr / Mg ratios. The results show an overall variation of 1.10 parts per thousand between all samples. In addition, Magnesium isotope ratios varied little in the streamwater and in soil solution, except during snowmelt periods during which a large portion of the annual runoff occurs. Magnesium in the streamwater is explained as a mixture of three pools (open field rain, soil solution and groundwater) with the latter two influenced by catchment processes. Outside the snow-melt period, Mg in streamwater mainly derived from the groundwater, assumed to be mineral weathering signature in this catchment, with a contribution ranging from 12 to 63% to Mg fluxes. Open field rain dominates Mg fluxes in streamwater during spring flood (0 to 78%) and may contribute significantly during larger summer and autumn rainfall events. Soil solution input to streamwater range from 16 to 59% of Mg fluxes in streamwater. Our results demonstrate that delta Mg-26 values together with Mg concentrations and Sr/Mg ratios can be used to constrain the Mg sources of stream water and quantify weathering release rates.

  • Increasing Dissolved Organic Carbon Redefines the Extent of Surface Water Acidification and Helps Resolve a Classic Controversy

    • Concentrations of organic acids in freshwaters have increased significantly during recent decades across large parts of Europe and North America. Different theories of the causes (e.g., recovery from acidification, climate change, land use) have different implications for defining the preindustrial levels for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which are crucial for assessing acidification and other aspects of water quality. We demonstrate this by classifying the acidification status of 66 lakes with long-term observations, representative of about 12,700 acid-sensitive lakes in nemoral and boreal Sweden. Of these lakes, 47% are classified as significantly acidified (Delta pH >= 0.4), assuming preindustrial DOC levels were equal to those observed in 1990. But if instead, the higher DOC levels observed in 2009 define preindustrial conditions, half as many lakes are acidified (24%). This emphasizes the need to establish reference levels for DOC and casts new light on the classic controversy about natural versus anthropogenic acidification.

  • Uncertainty in silicate mineral weathering rate estimates : source partitioning and policy implications

    • Precise and accurate estimates of silicate mineral weathering rates are crucial when setting policy targets for long-term forest sustainability, critical load calculations and assessing consequences of proposed geo-engineering solutions to climate change. In this paper, we scrutinize 394 individual silicate mineral weathering estimates from 82 sites on three continents. We show that within-site differences of several hundred per cent arise when different methods are used to estimate weathering rates, mainly as a result of uncertainties related to input data rather than conceptually different views of the weathering process. While different methods tend to rank sites congruently from high to low weathering rates, large within-site differences in estimated weathering rate suggest that policies relying on quantitative estimates based upon a single method may have undesirable outcomes. We recommend the use of at least three independent estimates when making management decisions related to silicate mineral weathering rates.

    • Are current estimates of silicate minerals weathering rates precise enough to predict whether nutrient pools will recover after forest harvesting? Answering this question seems crucial for sustainable forestry practices on silicate dominated soils. In this paper, we synthesize estimated Ca and K weathering rates (derived using seven different approaches) from a forested area in northern Sweden (the Svartberget-Krycklan catchment) to evaluate the precision of weathering rate estimates. The methods were: mass-balance budgets (catchment and pedon-scale); long-term weathering losses inferred from weathered soil profiles (using zirconium as a conservative tracer); strontium isotopes ((86)Sr/(85)Sr) as proxy for catchment export of geogenic Ca; climate based regressions; a steady-state, process-based weathering model (PROFILE) and a dynamic, conceptual catchment geochemistry model (MAGIC). The different methods predict average weathering rates of 0.67 +/- 0.71 g Ca m(-2) year(-1) (mean +/- stdev) and 0.39 +/- 0.38 g K m(-2) year(-1), suggesting a cumulative weathering release during a forest rotation period of 100 years that is the same magnitude as losses induced by forest harvesting at the end of the period. Clearly, forestry practices have the capacity to significantly alter the long-term nutrient status of the soil and cation concentrations in soil-water runoff. However, the precision in weathering estimates are lower than that needed to distinguish between effects on nutrient pools by different forest practices (complete-tree harvesting versus conventional stem only harvest). Therefore, we argue that nutrient budgets, where weathering rates play a crucial role, cannot be used as basis for resolving whether different harvesting techniques will allow nutrient pools to recover within one rotation period. Clearly, this hampers the prerequisite for sound decision making regarding forestry practices on silicate mineral dominated soils. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • Low-order boreal streams are particularly sensitive interfaces where dissolved organic matter (DOM) is transported from soils to inland waters. Disentangling the relative influence of key environmental factors suspected to influence stream water DOM composition is highly relevant to predicting the reactivity and fate of terrestrial DOM entering inland waters. Here we examined changes to DOM composition using absorbance and fluorescence, from 17 boreal streams ranging from first to fourth orders, over 14 months, including the rarely studied winter season, and two snowmelt periods (n = 836). We also analyzed soil pore water samples from three forest soil lysimeters to a depth of 70 cm (n = 60). Of five identified fluorescing parallel factor analysis components, two (C4 and C5) expressed a clear mire wetland or forest signature, providing distinct molecular markers of dominant land cover. In fact, land cover alone explained 49% of the variability in DOM composition. In contrast, seasonal fluctuations in hydrology only contributed to minor shifts (8%) in the composition of stream water DOM, while in-stream transformations to DOM composition were undetectable. These findings suggest that low-order boreal streams act as a passive pipe, since in-stream processing of DOM is restricted by short water residence times (6 h to 2 days). In addition, we demonstrated the sensitivity of optical approaches to distinguish between key terrestrial sources of DOM in the boreal landscape. By distinguishing the proportional leverage of key environmental controls on headwater stream DOM composition, we are better equipped to predict where and when key DOM transformations occur in the aquatic conduit.

  • Effect of pH and Stream Order on Iron and Arsenic Speciation in Boreal Catchments

    • Riverine transport of iron (Fe) and arsenic (As) is affected by their associations with natural organic matter (NOM) and suspended iron (oxy)hydroxides. Speciation has a strong influence on element transport from the headwaters to the ocean because NOM may be transported over longer distances compared to iron (oxy)hydroxides. We show that Fe speciation changes along the flow path of a boreal watercourse, as water moves from NOM-rich, acidic first order streams with pH as low as 3.9 to less acidic higher-order systems (up to pH 6.4). Analysis by Flow Field-Flow Fractionation and chemical equilibrium modeling revealed that Fe from wetland-dominated headwaters was mainly exported as Fe-NOM complexes; in catchments with a stream order >1 and with higher pH, Fe was present in Fe-NOM complexes and precipitated as nanoparticulate iron(oxy)hydroxides which aggregated as the pH increased, with their size eventually exceeding the membrane filters cutoff (0.2 mu m). The measured NOM bound Fe decreased with increasing pH, from 0.38 to 0.16 mmol Fe center dot g(NOM)(-1). The high concentrations of NOM bound Fe emphasize the importance of boreal catchments to Fe export to the oceans. Concentrations of As in the <0.2 mu m fraction but larger than what is usually considered "truly dissolved" (<1000 g.mol(-1)), decreased from 75% to 26% with increasing pH. The As in this size range was mainly associated with NOM but at pH >4.5 became associated with iron(oxy)hydroxides, and its transport thus became more coupled to that of the iron(oxy)hydroxides downstream in the circumneutral streams.

    • In this study we present data from a seven-year time series from 15 nested streams within a 68 km(2) catchment, covering a pH gradient of almost three units. We demonstrate that the two landscape types, forest and wetlands, control the relative mobilization of Al and Fe in this boreal landscape. The La/U ratio is almost constant across the whole catchment despite large variations in pH, Al/Fe and TOC, whereas U and La mobilization increases with increasing contribution of deeper soils and groundwater further downstream. High Al/TOC ratios in the forested catchments suggest that Al originates from the underlying mineral soils, and low Al/TOC ratios derive from wetlands where Al is retained. We observe a competition effect on the binding to TOC between Al and La and also that the relationship between TOC, Al and La changes from the smaller (0.05-2 km(2)) catchments to larger (3-68 km(2)) downstream locations. As pH increase downstream, Al and Fe are gradually removed from the aqueous phase by precipitation of particulate gibbsite-like phases and ferrihydrite. This selective removal of Al and Fe from TOC binding sites results in higher La, and U concentrations downstream. Observed element patterns (U, La) and the range of upper continental crust normalized (La/Nd)(UCC) and (La/Yb)(UCC) in the near stream, riparian zone were very similar to the observed ratios across the whole catchment. The rising (La/Nd)(UCC) over (La/Yb)(UCC) may be due to a selective removal of REE binding to ferrihydrate in the riparian soil, the result of two distinctly different end-members but most probably not due to the in-stream precipitation of ferrihydrate or gibbsite-like phases.

    • We bring together three decades of research from a boreal catchment to facilitate an improved mechanistic understanding of surface water dissolved organic carbon (DOC) regulation across multiple scales. The Krycklan Catchment Study encompasses 15 monitored nested research catchments, ranging from 3 to 6900 ha in size, as well as a set of monitored transects of forested and wetland soils. We show that in small homogenous catchments, hydrological functioning provides a first order control on the temporal variability of stream water DOC. In larger, more heterogeneous catchments, stream water DOC dynamics are regulated by the combined effect of hydrological mechanisms and the proportion of major landscape elements, such as wetland and forested areas. As a consequence, streams with heterogeneous catchments undergo a temporal switch in the DOC source. In a typical boreal catchment covered by 10-20% wetlands, DOC originates predominantly from wetland sources during low flow conditions. During high flow, the major source of DOC is from forested areas of the catchment. We demonstrate that by connecting knowledge about DOC sources in the landscape with detailed hydrological process understanding, an improved representation of stream water DOC regulation can be provided. The purpose of this study is to serve as a framework for appreciating the role of regulating mechanisms, connectivity and scaling for understanding the pattern and dynamics of surface water DOC across complex landscapes. The results from this study suggest that the sensitivity of stream water DOC in the boreal landscape ultimately depends on changes within individual landscape elements, the proportion and connectivity of these affected landscape elements, and how these changes are propagated downstream.
