  • Smart Ports’ Influence on Coastal Sustainability
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Transport Means - Proceedings of the International Conference. - : Kauno Technologijos Universitetas. ; , s. 396-401
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nowadays, ports are actively seeking ways to improve their safety and operational activity. An essential driver in this context is digitalisation. Since seaports are also key actors for the sustainable development of coastal regions, it is important that they transform into smart port ecosystems. Hence, the automation and digitisation of ports’ operations are important not only for the ports themselves, but also for the regions and countries hosting regional port ecosystems. Studies on the digitalisation level of ports bear the potential to detect optimal ways for increasing safety, security and visibility in terms of the digital transformation, as well as attracting passengers and freight flows, which in turn positively affects not only the ports, but particularly also the sustainable development of coastal regions. Therefore, the paper presents the results of a conducted assessment of small and medium-sized ports’ digitisation level as well as introduces ways and recommendations how to improve the level of digitisation on the path towards becoming a smarter port ecosystem. The research builds upon key insights from the Connect2SmallPorts project, part-financed by INTERREG South Baltic Programme 2014–2020. Thereby, the research utilises collected primary data concerning ports located in the Baltic, North and Mediterranean Sea Regions. Thus, the study bases on well-grounded theoretical and practical findings in the maritime science field in the nexus of digital transformation. © 2021 Kaunas University of Technology. • Agent based simulation architecture for evaluating operational policies in transshipping containers
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: AUTONOMOUS AGENTS AND MULTI-AGENT SYSTEMS. - : Springer. - 1387-2532 .- 1573-7454. ; , s. 220-238
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An agent based simulator for evaluating operational policies in the transshipment of containers in a container terminal is described. The simulation tool, called SimPort, is a decentralized approach to simulating managers and entities in a container terminal. Real data from two container terminals are used as input for evaluating eight transshipment policies. The policies concern the sequencing of ships, berth allocation, and stacking rule. They are evaluated with respect to a number of aspects, such as, turn-around time for ships and traveled distance of straddle carriers. The simulation results indicate that a good choice in yard stacking and berthing position policies can lead to faster ship turn-around times. For instance, in the terminal studied the Overall-Time-Shortening policy offers fast turn-around times when combined with a Shortest-Job-First sequencing of arriving ships.

  • Evaluation of Automated Guided Vehicle Systems for Container Terminals Using Multi Agent Based Simulation
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to globalization and the growth of international trade, many container terminals are trying to improve performance in order to keep up with demand. One technology that has been proposed is the use of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) in the handling of containers within terminals. Recently, a new generation of AGVs has been developed which makes use of cassettes that can be detached from the AGV. We have developed an agent-based simulator for evaluating the cassette-based system and comparing it to a more traditional AGV system. In addition, a number of different configurations of container terminal equipment, e.g., number of AGVs and cassettes, have been studied in order to find the most efficient configuration. The simulation results suggest that there are configurations in which the cassette-based system is more cost efficient than a traditional AGV system, as well as confirming that multi agent based simulation is a promising approach to this type of applications.

  • Using Simulation in Evaluating Berth Allocation at a Container Terminal
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The operations and decision making at a container terminal have been simulated. A Berth Allocation Management System – (BAMS) has been built which consists of two parts: a container terminal simulator modelling the operations and a management simulator modelling the various actors involved in the allocation of container ships to berths. Together these two parts generate berth schedules for arriving container ships. Two berth assignment policies are evaluated in different scenarios, with various quay lengths, berth spacing lengths, and ship arrival sequences. The decisions in assigning ships with different loading and discharging demands to a limited amount of resources, such as berth space and cranes are analysed with the BAMS. The berths at the container terminal are modelled by the BAMS to be dynamic in the sense that berth segmentation is based on the current situation rather than being static. The policies are evaluated in terms of turn-around time and distance travelled by the straddle carriers. The simulation results indicate that an informed choice of berth assignment policy can provide better use of the available resources, e.g., by reducing turnaround time and/or distance travelled by the straddle carriers.

  • Optimization of a HMM-based hand gesture recognition system using a hybrid cuckoo search algorithm
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Hybrid Metaheuristics for Image Analysis. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319776255 - 9783319776248 ; , s. 87-114
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The authors develop an advanced hand motion recognition system for virtual reality applications using a well defined stochastic mathematical approach. Hand gesture is a natural way of interaction with a computer by interpreting the primitive characteristics of gesture movement to the system. This concerns three basic issues: (1) there is no physical contact between the user and the system, (2) the rotation of the hand gesture can be determined by the geometric features, and (3) the model parameter must be optimized to improve measurement of performance. A comparative analysis of other classification techniques used in hand gesture recognition is carried out on the proposed work hybrid with the bio-inspired metaheuristic approach, namely the cuckoo search algorithm, for reducing the complex trajectory in the hidden Markov model (HMM) model. An experimental result is as to how to validate the HMM model, based on the cost value of the optimizer, in order to improve the performance measures of the system. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.
