    • Enabling detection of target molecules at low concentration is a key feature in localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensors, which utilizes the remarkable optical properties of metal nanoparticles such as gold (Au) and silver (Ag) induced by the excitation of LSPR. However, the clear interrelationship between three-dimensional (3D) metal nanoparticle topography and localization of SPR is not fully understood. For the studies, we here propose and demonstrate an approach for fabricating new type of self-template 3D Au nanostructures by using boron nanowire arrays (BNWs) as a building block grown by oxide-assisted vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mode at relatively low temperatures. This is the first report on formation of 3D Au pores and clusters induced by boron oxide (B2O3) below 500°C.

    • In an era characterized by a move towards a “knowledge society”, universities are central in fostering “knowledgeability”, that is the reflexive understanding of knowledge in knowledge societies. The objective of “knowledgeability” can be met through creating a stronger link between education and research. Furthermore, overall student performance, for example in critical thinking and problem solving, can be improved if research-related activities are incorporated into the curriculum.The aim of this paper is to use international examples to discuss the research- education nexus from four different perspectives, namely context, policy, implementation and quality, with case studies from higher education institutions in Singapore and Sweden.We suggest that different integrative technologies can be used to enhance the links, but it will be essential to consider the inputs of training, service and support in using new technology. Interestingly, the act of evaluating the link between education and research will increase awareness of this linkage by stakeholders involved in both education and research. In turn the link can be strengthened, contributing to increased quality in both education and research.

    • As online and blended learning environments have expanded within educational contexts, online support services such as online writing labs have emerged concurrently to provide students with additional assistance. Some online writing labs now use technologies, including audio-visual-textual conferencing (Yergeau, Wozniak, & Vandenberg, 2009), that allow tutors and student writers to engage in sustained, synchronous, one-on-one interactions. Though researchers and teacher trainers have begun to explore the processes involved in preparing teachers for online classrooms (e.g., Wang, Chen, & Levy, 2010), less attention has been paid to the training and preparation of writing tutors to be effective in digital contexts. Nonetheless, Kastman Breuch and Racine (2000) argue that “online tutors need training specific to online writing spaces” while noting the difficulty of translating training for physical spaces to digital ones in spite of the fact that learning outcomes can be “equally facilitated” in both contexts (p. 246). In this chapter, we present our reflective approach to this issue in the English Language Improvement Program (ELIP) Academic & Global Communication Program’s Writing Lab at Ohio University.

    • This chapter presents a practical method to investigate the effects of brittle fracture on the ultimate compressive strength of steel stiffened-plate structures under cryogenic conditions. Computational models are developed to analyse the ultimate compressive strength of steel stiffened-plate structures, triggered by brittle fracture, under cryogenic condition. A phenomenological form of the material model for the high-strength steel at cryogenic condition is proposed, that takes into account the Bauschinger effect, and implemented into a nonlinear finite element solver (LS-DYNA). Comparison between computational predictions and experimental measurements is made for the ultimate compressive strength response of a full-scale steel stiffened-plate structure, showing a good agreement between them.

    • Productivity growth enables an individual firm to raise profit and market share at the micro level, and it helps a country to counteract inflation, create jobs, and to force the necessary industrial restructuring at the macro level. There is widespread consensus among academic researchers in the field of growth theory, policy makers, and/or businessmen that productivity growth is indispensable to sustainable economic growth. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to improve the productivity, since the ways and means critically depend upon the context and the condition under which firms operate. For example, the strategy for productivity growth in 2000s should be different from that in 1990s, since the parameters forming the economic condition are different and changing. Cross-sectionally, the strategy for automobile industry should not be the same as that for financial institutions, mainly because the production process and industry structure are all different from each other. Thus, the decision maker who is in charge of productivity growth should learn the characteristics of the context, and track down the relevant studies and successful policies that tackle similar sector and/or period. ©2009 Physica-Verlag Heidelberg.
