  • The Vicissitudes of Corruption : Degeneration - transgression - jouissance
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In a time when corruption is receiving increasing media coverage and when many claim to wage a war on corruption, this book brings up the need for a problematisation and an increased understanding of the different manifestations – the vicissitudes – of corruption and also what measures are taken against it. The book advances the claim that corruption is tightly related to modernity and particularly to a transgression of the public / private dichotomy. It furthermore explores ancient, postmodern and psychoanalytic critiques of the modern understanding of corruption. The ancient perspective stems from theorists arguing that there is an ancient core meaning of corruption, i.e. degeneration. This perspective is also informed by a discussion about virtues based on Alasdair MacIntyre. The postmodern perspective is based on Zygmunt Bauman. It is held that corruption is the remnant of the classification of the world into the public and the private, caused by the inherent ambiguity of reality. The psychoanalytic perspective, based on Jacques Lacan and Slavoj Žižek, deepens the analysis and relates corruption to stolen enjoyment – jouissance. These different understandings of corruption are used to analyse primarily bribery in Swedish public sector procurement. In interviews, project managers responsible for public procurement give their account not only of bribes and gifts, but also about partiality and objectivity in supplier evaluations. Using these interviews and theoretical perspectives, the book problematises corruption and investigates how it is addressed and externalised with clear rules, virtues and rituals separating the public role from the private .

  • Beyond "Leanear" production : A multi-level approach for achieving circularity in a lean manufacturing context
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 318
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the growth of the research on lean and green manufacturing systems, consideration of how circular economy principles complement lean has been virtually absent from the literature due to a mismatch between research on lean green, which has focused on the internal manufacturing operations (product and process levels), and research on the circular economy, which takes a broader, more holistic view of environmental impact (the system level). Only a few researchers have considered the lean and the circular together. We argue that there is a need to understand the complementarities and conflicts between "lean" and "circularity". By combining the system level with process and product levels, this paper highlights which potentials in a lean manufacturing context are identified from a circular perspective and how to realize them. In this paper, we present a critical case study conducted at a Swedish manufacturing firm/original equipment manufacturer within the heavy-duty and off-road (HDOR) industry. Our results show that the company is locked into a lean and linear production, where material waste is not seen as a resource. We present how the three levels interplay and argue that they be combined when trying to integrate circular measures into this context.

  • Socio-techno-ecological transition dynamics in the re-territorialization of food production : the case of wild berries in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Sustainability Science. - : Springer. - 1862-4065 .- 1862-4057.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent geopolitical and economic crises underline the need for a European transition towards a more sustainable food system. Scholars and policymakers have called for a re-territorialization of food production to strike a better balance between local, regional and global value chains. This paper explores the role of re-territorialization through an analysis of the emergence, development and current transformation of the Swedish wild berry value chain. The analysis combines the multi-level perspective on sustainability transitions with a socio-techno-ecological system approach and draws on interviews, informal conversations, participant observations and a range of secondary sources. The resulting case narrative shows how processes of de-territorialization may result in regimes that fail to address sustainability potential and problems. It also highlights that processes of re-territorialization challenge established regimes by promoting niches that represent different, albeit complementary, value chain configurations. Apart from a rich empirical narrative that brings useful knowledge to stakeholders to the Swedish wild berry value chain, the paper contributes to the theoretical understanding re-territorialization, shows how the ecological dimension can be accounted for with the multi-level perspective on sustainability transitions and presents a number of general policy implications.

  • The transformation of Japanese institutions and governance : The case of vertical keiretsu in Toyota, Nissan, and Honda 1990-2010
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Academy of International Business.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is about the transformation of Japanese institutions and governance, focusing on keiretsu. We identify four dimensions of keiretsu (long-standing relationships, exclusiveness, governance mechanisms: trust/power/anshin (security), and support systems) based on which we discuss transformation of keiretsu in three companies in the automotive industry (Toyota, Nissan and Honda). We draw on both quantitative data on sales volume, ownership, membership in suppliers' associations as well as qualitative data from factory visits and interviews over a period of ten years. We argue that long-standing relationships to suppliers and exclusiveness have changed significantly in the Nissan, while remaining stable in Toyota and Honda. We argue that more competition based elements have been added to governance mechanisms, but that they still are hybrid combination of trust, power and anshin. The support systems still exist, but go beyond keiretsu in Toyota and Honda, indicating more openness. We relate the development of keiretsu to company policies and economic results of the three cases, arguing that Nissan's economic situation combined with its alliance with Renault had particularly strong effects on its keiretsu.

  • Ethical aspects of voice assistants : a critical discourse analysis of Indonesian media texts
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1477-996X .- 1758-8871. ; 20:1, s. 18-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Voice assistant (VA) technology is one of the fastest-growing artificial intelligence applications at present. However, the burgeoning scholarship argues that there are ethical challenges relating to this new technology, not the least related to privacy, which affects the technology's acceptance. Given that the media impacts public opinion and acceptance of VA and that there are no studies on media coverage of VA, the study focuses on media coverage. In addition, this study aims to focus on media coverage in Indonesia, a country that has been underrepresented in earlier research. Design/methodology/approach The authors used critical discourse analysis of media texts, focusing on three levels (text, discourse practice and social practice) to study how VA technology was discussed in the Indonesian context and what power relations frame the representation. In total, 501 articles were collected from seven national media in Indonesia from 2010 to 2020 and the authors particularly focus on the 45 articles that concern ethics. Findings The ethical topics covered are gender issues, false marketing, ethical wrongdoing, ethically positive effects, misuse, privacy and security. More importantly, when they are discussed, they are presented as presenting no real critical problem. Regarding discursive practices, the media coverage is highly influenced by foreign media and most of the articles are directed to well-educated Indonesians. Finally, regarding social practices, the authors hold that the government ideology of technological advancement is related to this positive portrayal of VAs. Originality/value First, to provide the first media discourse study about ethical issues of VAs. Second, to provide insights from a non-Western context, namely, Indonesia, which is underrepresented in the research on ethics of VAs.

  • Teaching Engineering Ethics With Drama
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 2020 IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference (FIE). - 9781728189628 - 9781728189611
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this Work in Progress, we present a new, simple, and fun way of incorporating drama into engineering ethics education with students producing, performing, and watching drama. The method differs from more established drama-based pedagogies in engineering ethics education, such as role-plays. We argue that this method can contribute to learning by stimulating moral imagination, empathy and sympathy, which balances the otherwise cognitive focus in engineering ethics courses. The component has been tested in practice three times in 2019-2020 in the Engineering Ethics course at Uppsala University. Student feedback is used to illustrate how the method has been perceived by students.
