    • tEffective model is a novel tool for decentralized controller design to handle the interconnected inter-actions in a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) process. In this paper, Type-1 and Type-2 effectiveTakagi-Sugeno fuzzy models (ETSM) are investigated. By means of the loop pairing criterion, simple cal-culations are given to build Type-1/Type-2 ETSMs which are used to describe a group of non-interactingequivalent single-input-single-output (SISO) systems to represent an MIMO process, consequently thedecentralized controller design can be converted to multiple independent single-loop controller designs,and enjoy the well-developed linear control algorithms. The main contributions of this paper are: i)Compared to the existing T-S fuzzy model based decentralized control methods using extra terms tocharacterize interactions, ETSM is a simple feasible alternative; ii) Compared to the existing effectivemodel methods using linear transfer functions, ETSM can be carried out without requiring exact mathe-matical process functions, and lays a basis to develop robust controllers since fuzzy system is powerful tohandle uncertainties; iii) Type-1 and Type-2 ETSMs are presented under a unified framework to provideobjective comparisons. A nonlinear MIMO process is used to demonstrate the ETSMs’ superiority overthe effective transfer function (ETF) counterparts as well as the evident advantage of Type-2 ETSMs interms of robustness. A multi-evaporator refrigeration system is employed to validate the practicabilityof the proposed methods.

  • Inter-host Transmission of Carbapenemase-Producing Escherichia coli among Humans and Backyard Animals

    • BACKGROUND: The rapidly increasing dissemination of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) in both humans and animals poses a global threat to public health. However, the transmission of CRE between humans and animals has not yet been well studied.OBJECTIVES: We investigated the prevalence, risk factors, and drivers of CRE transmission between humans and their backyard animals in rural China.METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive sampling strategy in 12 villages in Shandong, China. Using the household [residents and their backyard animals (farm and companion animals)] as a single surveillance unit, we assessed the prevalence of CRE at the household level and examined the factors associated with CRE carriage through a detailed questionnaire. Genetic relationships among human- and animal-derived CRE were assessed using whole-genome sequencing-based molecular methods.RESULTS: A total of 88 New Delhi metallo beta lactamasesmetallo-β-lactamases–type carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli (NDM-EC), including 17 from humans, 44 from pigs, 12 from chickens, 1 from cattle, and 2 from dogs, were isolated from 65 of the 746 households examined. The remaining 12 NDM-EC were from flies in the immediate backyard environment. The NDM-EC colonization in households was significantly associated with a) the number of species of backyard animals raised/kept in the same household, and b) the use of human and/or animal feces as fertilizer. Discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) revealed that a large proportion of the core genomes of the NDM-EC belonged to strains from hosts other than their own, and several human isolates shared closely related core single-nucleotide polymorphisms and bla sub NDMblaNDM genetic contexts with isolates from backyard animals.CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, we are the first to report evidence of direct transmission of NDM-EC between humans and animals. Given the rise of NDM-EC in community and hospital infections, combating NDM-EC transmission in backyard farm systems is needed. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP5251.

  • Effects of polycyclic musks HHCB and AHTN on steroidogenesis in H295R cells

    • 1,3,4,6,7,8-Hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta-(γ)-2-benzopyran (HHCB) and 7-acetyl-1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (AHTN) are widely used in personal care products. Previous studies showed that HHCB and AHTN can be found in various environmental matrices and have potential endocrine disrupting effects. However, the effects on adrenocortical function of HHCB and AHTN are not fully understood. This study evaluated the influences of HHCB and AHTN on seven steroid hormones (progesterone, aldosterone, cortisol, 17α-OH-progesterone, androstenedione, 17β-estradiol, and testosterone) and 10 genes involved in steroidogenic pathways (HMGR, StAR, CYP11A1, 3βHSD2, CYP17, CYP21, CYP11B1, CYP11B2, 17βHSD, and CYP19) using the H295R cell line in the absence and presence of 8-Br-cAMP. MC2R transcription on the cell membrane was also examined to further investigate the effects of HHCB and AHTN on adrenal steroidogenesis. The results demonstrated that HHCB and AHTN could inhibit progesterone and cortisol production mainly by the suppression of 3βHSD2 and CYP21. Meanwhile, high concentrations of AHTN can affect the sensitivity of H295R cells to ACTH by disrupting MC2R transcription. Overall, the results indicate that high concentrations of HHCB and AHTN can affect steroidogenesis in vitro using the H295R cell line.
