    • In-home healthcare services based on the Internet-of-Things (IoT) have great business potential; however, a comprehensive platform is still missing. In this paper, an intelligent home-based platform, the iHome Health-IoT, is proposed and implemented. In particular, the platform involves an open-platform-based intelligent medicine box (iMedBox) with enhanced connectivity and interchangeability for the integration of devices and services; intelligent pharmaceutical packaging (iMedPack) with communication capability enabled by passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) and actuation capability enabled by functional materials; and a flexible and wearable bio-medical sensor device (Bio-Patch) enabled by the state-of-the-art inkjet printing technology and system-on-chip. The proposed platform seamlessly fuses IoT devices (e. g., wearable sensors and intelligent medicine packages) with in-home healthcare services (e. g., telemedicine) for an improved user experience and service efficiency. The feasibility of the implemented iHome Health-IoT platform has been proven in field trials.

  • A DFT study of the electronic structures and optical properties of (Cr, C) co-doped rutile TiO2

    • To get an effective doping model of rutile TiO2, we systematically study geometrical parameters, density of states, electron densities, dielectric functions, optical absorption spectra for the pure, C mono-doping, Cr mono-doping and (Cr,C) co-doping rutile TiO2, using density functional calculations. We find that a C doped system presents higher stability under Ti-rich condition, while Cr doped and (Cr,C) co-doped systems are more stable under O-rich condition. For (Cr,C) co-doping situation, the imaginary part of the dielectric function reflects the higher energy absorption efficiency for incident photons. Moreover, co-doping system exhibits much bigger red-shift of optical absorption edge compared with Cr/C single doping systems, because of the great reduction of the direct band gap. The calculated optical absorption spectra show that the (Cr,C) co-doping rutile TiO2 has higher photocatalytic activity in the visible light region.

    • To obtain a more efficient (N,S) co-doping scheme, we systematically analyze the geometrical parameters, density of states, charge densities, relative dielectric functions and UV–Vis absorption spectra for pure, N/S substitution/interstitial doped and (N,S) substitution/interstitial co-doped TiO2 by using density functional calculations. Compared with (N,S) substitution co-doping, (N,S) interstitial co-doping TiO2 exhibits a more obvious red-shift of absorption edge, because of the band gap is further reduced. Furthermore, there are shallow impurity levels coupling with the top of valence band. The calculated UV–Vis absorption spectra illustrate that (N,S) interstitial co-doping TiO2 has much higher photocatalytic activity in the visible light region. © 2018

  • The scheme of mitigating the asymmetric links problem in wireless sensor networks

    • This paper investigates the radio irregularity (RI) phenomenon and its impact on communication performance in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Based on the theoretical analysis, we find that the RI phenomenon induces the asymmetric links problem. According to this discovery, we propose a novel HCT (Hop-count Correction Tree) scheme to handle this problem. HCT utilizes graph theoretical method to get a search tree and correct the hop count error that appears in the adjacent nodes. Practical results obtained from testbed experiments demonstrate that this solution can greatly improve localization accuracy in the presence of RI

  • A Method for Enterprise Architecture Model Slicing

    • Enterprise Architecture (EA) has been applied widely in industry as it brings substantial benefits to ease communication and improve business-IT alignment. However, due to its high complexity and cost, EA still plays a limited role in many organizations. Existing research recommends realizing more of the EA potential. EA can be developed for specific purposes, accumulated in a digital repository, and reused when needed later. Due to the diversity and inconsistency of the repository, it is challenging to find relevant EA data and reuse it. In the present research, we propose using slicing techniques to extract EA models for reuse. We validate the method with an official EA repository hosted by The Open Group. The result shows that the method could facilitate extracting existing EA model components for developing new EA artifacts to save cost, alleviate maintenance effort, and help keep the repository consistent for future (re)use.

    • Despite benefits Enterprise Architecture (EA) has brought, EA has also been challenged due to its complexity, heavy workload demands, and poor user acceptance. Researchers and practitioners proposed to use EA in an agile and "business outcome-driven" way. This means that EA should not primarily be developed and used according to a pre-defined framework. Instead, EA should be developed and used for specific business purposes and by means of concrete deliverables. By doing so, a more effective and efficient way of EA application could be enabled. However, there is no common agreement on what types of business goals can be expected to be achieved by using EA (The What) and how to achieve these goals through EA solutions (The How). To address these issues, we analysed the information provided by leading EA tool vendors available on their websites to get inspiration. The results showed that Use Cases (UCs) are used generally to motivate potential EA users by focusing on specific business issues. Then, EA solutions to address such business requirements or challenges are scoped and derived accordingly. We expect relevant findings could bring inspiration to agile EA engineering, change the EA “heavy-weight” reputation, and improve the application of EA even among its sceptics.

However, various challenges were also reported due to the difficulty and complexity of applying it. Some empirical studies showed that EA stilled played a limited role in many organizations. In this research, we showed other findings where the potential of EA could be better used. They are derived from our analysis of advanced EA tool recommendations. Based on these findings, we proposed four essential EA practices and the rationales behind them in order to improve the understanding of current practices and bring insights for future studies to boost the potential of EA.

    • This article presents a systematic mapping study of published scientific papers on Enterprise Architecture (EA) and agility. More specifically, we reviewed studies on applying agile practices to EA and applying EA to the organization’s agility. A categorical structure is proposed for classifying the research results based on the extracted topics discussed. The categories include agile traits (i.e., principles and practices), EA practices, and organizational contexts. By mapping the published works and analyzing them, the article also highlights some trends and indicates some obstacles and needs for future research and practice. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

    • Alignment is one of the most important benefits that Enterprise Architecture (EA) could bring to organizations. However, it is still unclear what mechanism EA uses to help organizations achieve alignment. Related research is very scattered, making it difficult to accumulate relevant knowledge and experiences, and thus, the more successful EA application is hindered. To address this issue, the present research examines essential requirements of alignment and mechanisms with which underlying EA deliverable models impact organizations. By doing so, we proposed a conceptual framework explaining how EA modeling activities contribute to organizational alignment. We demonstrated the use of this framework with three use cases. The results show that EA could help organizations achieve alignment in quite different ways, and our proposed framework helped us examine and understand the mechanisms. We expect this research could establish an essential common understanding of how EA enables organizational alignment, thereby facilitating academia to move forward in this field.

  • Study of Shear Property of HDPE by Experiment and Simulation

    • The aim of this work is to evaluate the effect of different specimen dimension and crack length on the mechanical properties of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) which is often used in the packaging industry. In the experimental part, two main specimens are chosen. One is dog-bone shaped tensile specimen for finding the tensile material properties. The other one is modified shear specimen for studying the shear damage. A corresponding numerical simulation is done by applying a commercial Finite Element Analysis (FEA) program ABAQUS. In addition, the microscopic analysis was performed to observe the fracture surface of specimen after the test with scanning electron microscope (SEM). A series of experiments and simulation were processed and results show that fracture initiation and propagation behavior in the shear specimen is sensitive to the size of the pre-crack (notch) and shear strain at failure.
