    • Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) has attracted widespread interest. In the present work, similarity analysis is adopted for a three-dimensional single-phase isothermal model of PEMFC to derive similarity criteria. Seven kinds of input criteria (Pi(1) similar to Pi(7)) are obtained, relevant to the fluid flow, pressure drop, flow resistance in a porous medium, activity loss, diffusion mass transfer, convective mass transfer and ohmic loss in PEMFC respectively. Dimensionless voltage and dimensionless current density are defined as two output criteria. Numerical verifications show that if the seven criteria keep their individual values with their components vary in a wide range, the dimensionless polarization curves keep the same with a deviation about 1%, showing the validity and feasibility of the present analysis. From the effect on the dimensionless polarization curve, sensibility analysis shows that the seven criteria can be divided into three categories: strong (Pi(4) and Pi(7), -94.9% similar to +349.2%), mild to minor (Pi(5) and Pi(6), -4.5% similar to +5.0%), and negligible (Pi(1), Pi(2) and Pi(3), -1.2% similar to +1.1%).   • A new indicator for a fair comparison on the energy performance of data centers

    • The power usage effectiveness (PUE) is commonly used as the key performance indicator to evaluate the energy performance of data centers. However, using only PUE cannot enable a fair comparison when data centers are operating in different regions, due to the unneglectable impacts of climatic conditions on the power consumption of cooling systems. To solve this problem, a new indicator, coefficient of PUE (COPUE), is proposed, which is defined as the ratio of the measured PUE of real data centers to the local benchmark PUE. The benchmark PUE is reckoned based on the current most commonly used cooling technology, which consists of water-cooled chillers and water cooling towers. A simplified method for calculating benchmark PUE is also developed. The degree hour of water cooling is introduced to consider the impacts of local climatic conditions. It presents the annual accumulated hours, in which chilled water is needed to satisfy the cooling demand of data centers. Through several case studies, COPUE has been proved to be an effective indicator for comparing the energy performance of data centers. When the same cooling technology is adopted, it can reflect how good the design and operation are; while, when different cooling technologies are adopted, it can be used to demonstrate which one is superior.

    • Selective noncatalytic reduction (SNCR) systems have been widely used for denitrification in small capacity boilers, such as biomass- and waste-fueled boilers. However, these systems cannot meet the requirements of ultralow emission regulations, i.e., 50 mg m−3. This work proposes a new solution that combines SNCR and activated carbon (AC). To solve the problem caused by the wettability of AC, which can significantly reduce the quantity of NOx that can be adsorbed and block active cites, hydrophobic modification was employed to amend the properties of AC. The influences of the key operating parameters on the denitrification of AC, including the reaction temperature, O2 concentration, feed gas flow rate, and contents of SO2 and CO2, have been investigated experimentally. A novel solution that combines AC and SNCR was proposed for industrial applications, and the economic feasibility has been verified. The results have demonstrated that this hybrid solution can achieve a low levelized cost of denitrification, which is 59.8% and 33.7% lower than those of SCR and hybrid SNCR/SCR.

  • Evaluating the role of clean heating technologies in rural areas in improving the air quality

    • The Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan proposed in 2013 has contributed to the fossil fuel reduction in central heating, but the consumption of scattered coal in rural areas should not be overlooked as it accounts for nearly 50% pollutant emissions during the heating season. Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan for Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Surrounding Areas was issued to solve the problem of scattered coal consumption and improve the heating energy structure in 2017. In this paper, an air quality-heating model is established to evaluate the air quality improvement potential and far-reaching influence of scattered coal consumption reduction in rural areas. Distinct from other air quality evaluation models, the proposed model is to evaluate the regional air quality related to the heating factors. The results indicate that the coal substitution policy can reduce PM2.5 concentrations in the heating season by about 20 mu g/m(3) in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and surrounding areas. Furthermore, predictions about the variation of PM2.5 concentration in the heating season are conducted, which indicate that the PM2.5 concentration of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and surrounding areas in 2030 will drop by 48%, 35%, 29% and 23% respectively compared to that in 2016. The reduction could be further enhanced to be 55%, 40%, 32% and 27% with the consideration of clean power development. This study is conducive to evaluate the clean heating technologies role in improving the environment and air quality.

  • Do ‘green’ data centres really have zero CO2 emissions?

    • The claim of a green data centre is generally made based on a net-zero CO2 emission through a ‘balance-sheet’ approach, which considers renewable electricity through on-site installation or purchase agreement as abatement measures against the use of fossil electricity from the electric grid on an annual basis. However, when the hourly dynamic fuel mix is accounted for in the assessment, the annual net-zero energy approach does not lead to a true carbon neutral data centre. In response, two approaches based on net-zero energy and net-zero CO2 emission respectively are proposed and investigated regarding the goal of net-zero CO2 emission. A data centre in Singapore with typical load profiles is used as a case study, different scenarios considering climate change and projected future energy are defined to examine the impacts of dynamic energy mix on the net CO2 emission of the data centre. The net-zero energy approach is found to result in significant amount of annual CO2 emissions. In comparison, the net-zero CO2 emission approach can assure a true net-zero CO2 emission, but this approach will require an increase of PV capacity by 20% and 60% as compared to the net-zero energy approach based on assessment for the year 2030 and 2050, respectively.

  • Pore-scale study of effects of relative humidity on reactive transport processes in catalyst layers in PEMFC

    • High surface area carbon (HSC) particles can be adopted to increase the specific surface area of catalyst layer (CL) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Relative humidity (RH) has a significant effect on the Pt activity inside HSC particles, and the underlying mechanisms need to be further investigated. In this study, a pore-scale model considering the effects of RH on the reactive transport processes inside the CLs is developed. Two kinds of liquid water distributions affected by the RH, including capillary condensation in pores and ultra-thin liquid film on Pt surface, are considered. The liquid water distribution, Pt activity and local oxygen transport resistance (Rlocal) under different RH are studied in detail. It is found that as RH increases from 0.3 to 1.0, the condensed water in micropores of HSC particles increases, resulting in an increase in reactive surface area by about 43 %. Combined effect of the RH, Pt loading, I/C ratio and different kinds of carbon particles is investigated. It is found that due to the lack of sufficient reaction sites, compared with that under a high Pt loading, Rlocal under a low Pt loading is more sensitive to the RH. Besides, since the Pt activity inside HSC particles depends on the condensed water, the Rlocal of HSC particles is more sensitive to the RH than solid carbon particles. Finally, the Rlocal at low ionomer content is more sensitive to RH due to low ionomer coverage on Pt particles. The present study provides a pore-scale model for investigating the coupled effects of RH and CL porous structures on local transport processes, and can facilitate the optimization of CL nanoscale structures for better cell performance.
