  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5–22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3– 19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8– 144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • China's most typical nonferrous organic-metal facilities own specific microbial communities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The diversity and function of microorganisms have yet to be explored at non-ferrous metal mining facilities (NMMFs), which are the world's largest and potentially most toxic sources of co-existing metal(loid)s and flotation reagents (FRs). The diversity and inferred functions of different bacterial communities inhabiting two types of sites (active and abandoned) in Guangxi province (China) were investigated for the first time. Here we show that the structure and diversity of bacteria correlated with the types of mine sites, metal(loid)s, and FRs concentrations; and best correlated with the combination of pH, Cu, Pb, and Mn. Combined microbial coenobium may play a pivotal role in NMMFs microbial life. Arenimonas, specific in active mine sites and an acidophilic bacterium, carries functions able to cope with the extreme conditions, whereas Latescibacteria specific in abandoned sites can degrade organics. Such a bacterial consortium provides new insights to develop cost-effective remediation strategies of co-contaminated sites that currently remain intractable for bioremediation.

  • Highly efficient ratiometric nanothermometers based on colloidal carbon quantum dots
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of materials chemistry. B. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2050-750X .- 2050-7518. ; 9:20, s. 4111-4119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical nanothermometers have attracted much attention due to their non-contact and precise measurement with high spatial resolution at the micro- and nanoscales. They can be applied in various fields such as micro-opto-electronics, photonics, and biomedical thermal and pH sensing, while most thermal sensors reported so far contain heavy metals or have low sensitivity. Herein, we demonstrate a highly sensitive ratiometric thermal sensor based on colloidal C-dots. C-dots exhibit dual emission originating from the band gap emission and surface-dominant emission, which show a different temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) response. Among different surface-functionalized C-dots, C-dots@OH exhibit an absolute thermal sensitivity of -0.082 degrees C-1, which is the highest among various types of ratiometric thermosensors, making it a very promising candidate for high-sensitivity, self-calibrated nanoscale thermometry. As a proof-of-concept, C-dots@OH were employed to monitor the intracellular temperature (32-42 degrees C), showing a clear trend for temperature variation in a single cell, indicating that C-dots could offer a powerful tool for a potential precise measurement of the intracellular temperature. They could also be used as thermal sensors for nano-electronic and optoelectronic devices.

  • Ejecta from the DART-produced active asteroid Dimorphos
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 616, s. 452-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Some active asteroids have been proposed to be formed as a result of impact events1. Because active asteroids are generally discovered by chance only after their tails have fully formed, the process of how impact ejecta evolve into a tail has, to our knowledge, not been directly observed. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission of NASA2, in addition to having successfully changed the orbital period of Dimorphos3, demonstrated the activation process of an asteroid resulting from an impact under precisely known conditions. Here we report the observations of the DART impact ejecta with the Hubble Space Telescope from impact time T + 15 min to T + 18.5 days at spatial resolutions of around 2.1 km per pixel. Our observations reveal the complex evolution of the ejecta, which are first dominated by the gravitational interaction between the Didymos binary system and the ejected dust and subsequently by solar radiation pressure. The lowest-speed ejecta dispersed through a sustained tail that had a consistent morphology with previously observed asteroid tails thought to be produced by an impact4,5. The evolution of the ejecta after the controlled impact experiment of DART thus provides a framework for understanding the fundamental mechanisms that act on asteroids disrupted by a natural impact1,6.

  • Enhancing the internet of things with knowledge-driven software-defined networking technology : Future perspectives
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI AG. - 1424-8220. ; 20:12, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Internet of Things (IoT) connects smart devices to enable various intelligent services. The deployment of IoT encounters several challenges, such as difficulties in controlling and managing IoT applications and networks, problems in programming existing IoT devices, long service provisioning time, underused resources, as well as complexity, isolation and scalability, among others. One fundamental concern is that current IoT networks lack flexibility and intelligence. A network-wide flexible control and management are missing in IoT networks. In addition, huge numbers of devices and large amounts of data are involved in IoT, but none of them have been tuned for supporting network management and control. In this paper, we argue that Software-defined Networking (SDN) together with the data generated by IoT applications can enhance the control and management of IoT in terms of flexibility and intelligence. We present a review for the evolution of SDN and IoT and analyze the benefits and challenges brought by the integration of SDN and IoT with the help of IoT data. We discuss the perspectives of knowledge-driven SDN for IoT through a new IoT architecture and illustrate how to realize Industry IoT by using the architecture. We also highlight the challenges and future research works toward realizing IoT with the knowledge-driven SDN.

  • Ionic liquids/deep eutectic solvents for CO2 capture: Reviewing and evaluating
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Green Energy & Environment. - : Elsevier. - 2468-0257. ; 6:3, s. 314-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The CO2 solubilities (including CO2 Henry’s constant) in physical- and chemical-based ILs/DESs and the COSMO-RS models describing these properties were comprehensively collected and summarized. The summarized results indicate that chemical-based ILs/DESs are superior to physical-based ILs/DESs for CO2 capture, especially those ILs have functionalized cation and anion, and superbase DESs; some of the superbase DESs have higher CO2 solubilities than those of ILs; the best physical- and chemical-based ILs, as well as physical- and chemical-based DESs are [BMIM][BF4] (4.20 mol kg-1), [DETAH][Im] (11.91 mol kg-1), [L-Arg]-Gly 1:6 (4.92 mol kg-1) and TBD-EG 1:4 (12.90 mol kg-1), respectively. Besides the original COSMO-RS mainly providing qualitative predictions, six corrected COSMO-RS models have been proposed to improve the prediction performance based on the experimental data, but only one model is with universal parameters. The newly determined experimental results were further used to verify the perditions of original and corrected COSMO-RS models. The comparison indicates that the original COSMO-RS qualitatively predicts CO2 solubility for some but not all ILs/DESs, while the quantitative prediction is incapable at all. The original COSMO-RS is capable to predict CO2 Henry’s constant qualitatively for both physical-based ILs and DESs, and quantitative prediction is only available for DESs. For the corrected COSMO-RS models, only the model with universal parameters provides quantitative predictions for CO2 solubility in physical-based DESs, while other corrected models always show large deviations (>83%) compared with the experimental CO2 Henry’s constants.

  • Epitaxial Growth and Determination of Band Alignment of Bi2Te3–WSe2 Vertical van der Waals Heterojunctions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ACS Materials Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2639-4979. ; 2:10, s. 1351-1359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial heterojunctions formed by vertical stacking of dissimilar two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayer materials in a chosen sequence hold tantalizing prospects for futuristic atomically thin circuits. The emergence of 2D topological insulators (TI), including Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3, and Sb2Te3, represents a new class of 2D building blocks and can complement the existing artificial heterojunctions as a result of their intriguing surface states protected by the time-reversal symmetry. However, the determination of band alignments of such 2D TI/TMD vertical heterojunctions, the key parameter for designing HJ-based electronic/photonic devices, which lies in the development of epitaxy growth, remains in its infancy. Here, we demonstrate the epitaxy growth of 2D TI/TMD vertical heterojunctions comprised of Bi2Te3/WSe2 with atomically clean interfaces that are spectroscopically accessible, and theoretically tractable. Cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images and the presence of interlayer-coupled characteristics from Raman spectroscopy collectively confirm the neat stacking of Bi2Te3/WSe2 with the absence of unwanted containments. Microbeam X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ÎŒXPS) measurement coupled with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrical characteristics of field effect transistors quantitatively reveals the type-II alignment of vertically stacked of quintuple layers (QL) Bi2Te3/WSe2. Meanwhile, the type-III band emerges when transitioning to multi-quintuple layer (MQL) Bi2Te3/WSe2. The finding here provides a well-defined example of the epitaxy growth paradigm, the interlayer coupling-electronic properties relationship, for these emerging 2D TI/TMDs vertical heterojunctions. © 2020 American Chemical Society.

  • Spectral Analysis of Epidemic Thresholds of Temporal Networks
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2168-2267 .- 2168-2275. ; 50:5, s. 1965-1977
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many complex systems can be modeled as temporal networks with time-evolving connections. The influence of their characteristics on epidemic spreading is analyzed in a susceptible-infected-susceptible epidemic model illustrated by the discrete-time Markov chain approach. We develop the analytical epidemic thresholds in terms of the spectral radius of weighted adjacency matrix by averaging temporal networks, e.g., periodic, nonperiodic Markovian networks, and a special nonperiodic non-Markovian network (the link activation network) in time. We discuss the impacts of statistical characteristics, e.g., bursts and duration heterogeneity, as well as time-reversed characteristic on epidemic thresholds. We confirm the tightness of the proposed epidemic thresholds with numerical simulations on seven artificial and empirical temporal networks and show that the epidemic threshold of our theory is more precise than those of previous studies.

  • An empirical approach for predicting burden velocities in rock blasting
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. - : Elsevier. - 1674-7755. ; 13:4, s. 767-773
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An analytical relation between burden velocity and ratio of burden to blasthole diameter is developed in this paper. This relation is found to be consistent with the measured burden velocities of all 37 full-scale blasts found from published articles. These blasts include single-hole blasts, multi-hole blasts, and simultaneously-initiated blasts with various borehole diameters such as 64 mm, 76 mm, 92 mm, 115 mm, 142 mm and 310 mm. All boreholes were fully charged. The agreement between measured and calculated burden velocities demonstrates that this relation can be used to predict the burden velocity of a wide range of full-scale blast with fully-coupled explosive charge and help to determine a correct delay time between adjacent holes or rows in various full-scale blasts involved in tunnelling (or drifting), surface and underground mining production blasts and underground opening slot blasts. In addition, this theoretical relation is found to agree with the measured burden velocities of 9 laboratory small-scale blasts to a certain extent. To predict the burden velocity of a small-scale blast, a further study or modification to the relation is necessary by using more small-scale blasts in the future.
