  • Zero Prevalence of Influenza A Virus in Two Raptor Species by Standard Screening
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 1530-3667 .- 1557-7759. ; 10:4, s. 387-390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Disease can have sever impact on animal populations, especially in rare species. Baseline data for atypical host species are missing for a range of infectious diseases, although such hosts are potentially more affected than the normal vectors and reservoir species. If highly pathogenic avian influenza strikes rare birds of prey, this may have crucial impact on the predator species itself, but also on the food web in which it interacts. Here we present the first large-scale screening of raptors that regularly consume birds belonging to the natural reservoir of influenza A viruses. Influenza A virus prevalence was studied in two rare raptors, the white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaetus albicilla) and the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). Nestlings were screened for active (181 white-tailed sea eagles and 168 peregrine falcons) and past (123 white-tailed sea eagles and 6 peregrine falcons) infection in 2006-2007, and an additional 20 succumbed adult white-tailed sea eagles were sampled in 2003-2006. Neither high- nor low-pathogenic influnza infections were found in our sample, but this does not rule out that the former may have major impact on rare raptors and their food webs.

  • State of Bryophyte Ecology 2005 : the final meeting of the BRYOPLANET network held in Kéked, Hungary 19-25 August 2005
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Lindbergia. - 0105-0761 .- 2001-5909. ; 31:1-2, s. 3-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • BRYOPLANET, a bryophyte population and landscape analysis network, was funded by the Nordic Research Board (Nordforsk) from 2001-2005 to arrange scientific meetings, workshops and courses for researchers and students on bryophyte ecology in the Nordic and Baltic countries. It provided a tool for connecting bryologists in the region and elsewhere. The network succeeded in connecting experienced reserachers’ broad knowledge with young enthusiastic post-graduate students with fresh ideas. In the final meeting of the network in Kéked, Hungary on 19-22 August 2005 and during the post-meeting excursion on 22-25 August, 2005, the present state of research was discussed with strong emphasis on identifying the highlights and also the weaknesses in the many fields of bryophyte ecology today. The meeting consisted of seven invited retrospective lectures, offered by specialists in different fields of bryophyte ecology, and reserachers and students had an opportunity to present ongoing projects to the audience. In addition to the lectures, the meeting consisted of 15 presentations ranging from phylogeographic patterns to morphological adaptations, population dynamics and genetics. Retrospective lectures have been published, along with some of the original papers presented at the Kéked meeting. This introduction presents and evaluates the history, aims and outcomes of the BRYOPLANET network in addition to reporting on the final meeting in Kéked.

  • No difference in small bowel microbiota between patients with irritable bowel syndrome and healthy controls
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several studies have indicated that colonic microbiota may exhibit important differences between patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and healthy controls. Less is known about the microbiota of the small bowel. We used massive parallel sequencing to explore the composition of small bowel mucosa-associated microbiota in patients with IBS and healthy controls. We analysed capsule biopsies from the jejunum of 35 patients (26 females) with IBS aged 18-(36)-57 years and 16 healthy volunteers (11 females) aged 20-(32)-48 years. Sequences were analysed based on taxonomic classification. The phyla with the highest total abundance across all samples were: Firmicutes (43%), Proteobacteria (23%), Bacteroidetes (15%), Actinobacteria (9.3%) and Fusobacteria (7.0%). The most abundant genera were: Streptococcus (19%), Veillonella (13%), Prevotella (12%), Rothia (6.4%), Haemophilus (5.7%), Actinobacillus (5.5%), Escherichia (4.6%) and Fusobacterium (4.3%). We found no difference among major phyla or genera between patients with IBS and controls. We identified a cluster of samples in the small bowel microbiota dominated by Prevotella, which may represent a common enterotype of the upper small intestine. The remaining samples formed a gradient, dominated by Streptococcus at one end and Escherichia at the other.

  • Influence of iron addition on the oxygen-deficient Sr0.85Bi0.15Co1-xFexO3-delta (0.0 <= x <= 1.0) perovskites
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Solid State Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-4596 .- 1095-726X. ; 181:8, s. 2031-2040
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of oxygen-deficient Sr0.85Bi0.15Co1-xFexO3-delta (0.0 <= x <= 1.0) perovskite phases were prepared using solid-state reaction. Results of neutron powder diffraction analyses show that the introduction of Fe onto the B-site severely effects the long range coherence of the oxygen vacancy ordered, 14/mmm supercell, observed for the x = 0.0 sample. For x = 0.1 a smaller, a = b approximate to a(p), c approximate to 2a(p), P4/mmm supercell gives the best agreement to the diffraction data, whilst phases in the range 0.2 <= x <= 0.6 adopt disordered cubic perovskite structures. Pseudo-cubic, a = b approximate to a(p), c approximate to a(p), structures are found for x >= 0.8. Evidence of weak superstructures, reflecting local oxygen ordering, is also obtained from electron diffraction. For all oxygen-annealed phases the average structure reverts to cubic Pm (3) over barm. The as-prepared samples show G-type antiferromagnetic order at room temperature. The oxygen annealed x = 0.10, 0.25 and 1.0 samples display low-temperature spin-glass transitions.

  • a noise robust multilingual reference recogniser based on speechdat(II)
  • 2000
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An important aspect of noise robustness of automatic speech recognisers (ASR) is the proper handling of non-speech acoustic events. The present paper describes further improvements of an already existing reference recogniser towards achieving such kind of robustness. The reference recogniser applied is the COST 249 SpeechDat reference recogniser, which is a fully automatic, language-independent training procedure for building a phonetic recogniser (http://www.telenor.no/fou/prosjekter/taletek/refrec). The reference recogniser relies on the HTK toolkit and a Speech- Dat(II) compatible database, and is designed to serve as a reference system in multilingual speech recognition research. The paper describes version 0.96 of the reference recogniser which take into account labelled non-speech acoustic events during training and provides robustness against these during testing. Results are presented on small and medium vocabulary recognition for six languages.

  • Identification of Salivary Microbiota and Its Association With Host Inflammatory Mediators in Periodontitis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2235-2988. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Periodontitis is a microbial-induced chronic inflammatory disease, which may not only result in tooth loss, but can also contribute to the development of various systemic diseases. The transition from healthy to diseased periodontium depends on microbial dysbiosis and impaired host immune response. Although periodontitis is a common disease as well as associated with various systemic inflammatory conditions, the taxonomic profiling of the salivary microbiota in periodontitis and its association with host immune and inflammatory mediators has not been reported. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify key pathogens and their potential interaction with the host's inflammatory mediators in saliva samples for periodontitis risk assessment. The microbial 16S rRNA gene sequencing and the levels of inflammatory mediators were performed in saliva samples from patients with chronic periodontitis and periodontally healthy control subjects. The salivary microbial community composition differed significantly between patients with chronic periodontitis and healthy controls. Our analyses identified a number of microbes, including bacteria assigned to Eubacterium saphenum, Tannerella forsythia, Filifactor alocis, Streptococcus mitis/parasanguinis, Parvimonas micra, Prevotella sp., Phocaeicola sp., and Fretibacterium sp. as more abundant in periodontitis, compared to healthy controls. In samples from healthy individuals, we identified Campylobacter concisus, and Veillonella sp. as more abundant. Integrative analysis of the microbiota and inflammatory mediators/cytokines revealed associations that included positive correlations between the pathogens Treponema sp. and Selenomas sp. and the cytokines chitinase 3-like 1, sIL-6R alpha, sTNF-R1, and gp 130/sIL-6R beta. In addition, a negative correlation was identified between IL-10 and Filifactor alocis. Our results reveal distinct and disease-specific patterns of salivary microbial composition between patients with periodontitis and healthy controls, as well as significant correlations between microbiota and host-mediated inflammatory cytokines. The positive correlations between the pathogens Treponema sp. and Selenomas sp. and the cytokines chitinase 3-like 1, sIL-6R alpha, sTNF-R1, and gp 130/sIL-6R beta might have the future potential to serve as a combined bacteria-host salivary biomarker panel for diagnosis of the chronic infectious disease periodontitis. However, further studies are required to determine the capacity of these microbes and inflammatory mediators as a salivary biomarker panel for periodontitis.

  • Is Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) a superior screening tool for heat stress risk than Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index? : Eight years of data from the Gothenburg half marathon
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Sports Medicine. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 0306-3674 .- 1473-0480. ; 55:15, s. 825-830
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index is a common tool to screen for heat stress for sporting events. However, the index has a number of limitations. Rational indices, such as the physiological equivalent temperature (PET) and Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), are potential alternatives. Aim: To identify the thermal index that best predicts ambulance-required assistances and collapses during a city half marathon. Methods: Eight years (2010-2017) of meteorological and ambulance transport data, including medical records, from Gothenburg's half-marathon were used to analyse associations between WBGT, PET and UTCI and the rates of ambulance-required assistances and collapses. All associations were evaluated by Monte-Carlo simulations and leave-one-out-cross-validation. Results: The PET index showed the strongest correlation with both the rate of ambulance-required assistances (R2=0.72, p=0.008) and collapses (R2=0.71, p=0.008), followed by the UTCI (R2=0.64, p=0.017; R2=0.64, p=0.017) whereas the WBGT index showed substantially poorer correlations (R2=0.56, p=0.031; R2=0.56, p=0.033). PET stages of stress, match the rates of collapses better that the WBGT flag colour warning. Compared with the PET, the WBGT underestimates heat stress, especially at high radiant heat load. The rate of collapses increases with increasing heat stress; large increase from the day before the race seems to have an impact of the rate of collapses. Conclusion: We contend that the PET is a better predictor of collapses during a half marathon than the WBGT. We call for further investigation of PET as a screening tool alongside WBGT.
