Enteric methane emissions from dairy cows fed different proportions of highly digestible grass silage

- Enteric methane (CH4) emissions were measured from six lactating dairy cows using the sulfur hexafluoride tracer technique. Three diets with different proportions of highly digestible grass silage/concentrates were fed: 500/500, 700/300, or 900/100 g /kg dry matter (DM). The average daily CH4 emissions were 282, 300, and 321 g /animal, respectively and the methane conversion factor (Ym) from gross energy (GE) ranged from 0.051 to 0.056. However, the statistical power of the study was weak and the differences between diets were not significant (P=0.149 and P=0.293, respectively). A linear regression analysis showed a trend (p=0.08) toward higher enteric CH4 emissions with higher proportion of high quality grass silage in the diet. A definite conclusion is not possible and further studies are needed as a base for concrete advice on how to mitigate enteric CH4 emissions from high yielding dairy cows in Scandinavia

- The purpose of this paper is to investigate the economic impact and potential of agricultural sectors and commodities in Swedish agriculture. In so doing, we disaggregate the single agricultural account of the Swedish national input-output (IO) table as presented in the MAKE and USE format. An analysis of the disaggregated system reveals the heterogeneous nature of farm types as regards their production and shows their use of intermediate inputs. High multipliers generally accrue to livestock production and commodities, specifically poultry and eggs. This would indicate that livestock sectors have a greater potential to stimulate output, employment and income throughout the economy. The potential for incorporating IO results into the assessment of rural development is also discussed

Design Decisions and Co-operative Development of Manufacturing Systems

- This thesis presents contributions within two domains of manufacturing system development. The first domain is systematic design of product and manufacturing system. The second domain is model based co-operative development between manufacturing companies and manufacturing system suppliers. The axiomatic design framework for design is used to describe the product design and the manufacturing system design. The most important contributions are that product properties and analysis of product function are considered when specifying the manufacturing system. The systematic adaptation of product to the selected manufacturing solution is another contribution. A new concept of manufacturing phase functional requirements has been defined in order to cope with requirements from the manufacturing process on the in process product. The co-operative concept is based on the use of ISO 10303-214 for specification and communication of proposed systems and equipment. The concept has been tested using real project information in prototype implementation
