    • Infield systems originated during the early Iron Age and existed until the 19th century, although passing many transitions and changes. The core features of infield systems were enclosed infields with hay-meadows and crop fields, and unenclosed outland mainly used for livestock grazing. We examine the transitions and changes of domesticated landscapes with infield systems using the framework of human niche construction, focusing on reciprocal causation affecting change in both culture and environment. A first major transition occurred during the early Middle Ages, as a combined effect of a growing elite society and an increased availability of iron promoted expansion of villages with partly communal infields. A second major transition occurred during the 18th and 19th centuries, due to a then recognized inefficiency of agricultural production, leading to land reforms. In outlands, there was a continuous expansion of management throughout the whole period. Even though external factors had significant impacts as well, human niche construction affected a range of cultural and environmental features regarding the management and structure of domesticated landscapes with infield systems. Thus, niche construction theory is a useful framework for understanding the historical ecology of infield systems.

    • We study non-life insurance pricing and present a general procedure for constructing a distribution-free locally unbiased predictor of the risk premium based on any initially suggested predictor. The resulting predictor is piecewise constant, corresponding to a partition of the covariate space, and by construction auto-calibrated. Two key issues are the appropriate partitioning of the covariate space and the handling of randomly varying durations, acknowledging possible early termination of contracts. A basic idea in the present paper is to partition the predictions from the initial predictor, which as a by-product defines a partition of the covariate space. Two different approaches to create partitions are discussed in detail using (i) duration-weighted equal-probability binning, and (ii) binning by duration-weighted regression trees. Given a partitioning procedure, the size of the partition to be used is obtained using cross-validation. In this way we obtain an automatic data-driven tariffication procedure, where the number of tariff cells corresponds to the size of the partition. We illustrate the procedure based on both simulated and real insurance data, using both simple GLMs and GBMs as initial predictors. The resulting tariffs are shown to have a rather small number of tariff cells while maintaining or improving the predictive performance compared to the initial predictors.

  • Significant Communities in Large Sparse Networks

    • Researchers use community-detection algorithms to reveal large-scale organization in biological and social networks, but community detection is useful only if the communities are significant and not a result of noisy data. To assess the statistical significance of the network communities, or the robustness of the detected structure, one approach is to perturb the network structure by removing links and measure how much the communities change. However, perturbing sparse networks is challenging because they are inherently sensitive; they shatter easily if links are removed. Here we propose a simple method to perturb sparse networks and assess the significance of their communities. We generate resampled networks by adding extra links based on local information, then we aggregate the information from multiple resampled networks to find a coarse-grained description of significant clusters. In addition to testing our method on benchmark networks, we use our method on the sparse network of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) case law, to detect significant and insignificant areas of law. We use our significance analysis to draw a map of the ECJ case law network that reveals the relations between the areas of law.

    • The steroid 9α-hydroxylase gene has been cloned from Mycobacterium smegmatis into Escherichia coli BL21. Progesterone added to bioreactors was subjected to in vivo transformation into 9α-hydroxyprogesterone. In 7 days, 43.6 mg9α-hydroxyprogesterone was formed from 53.8 mg/L progesterone. The enzyme also has shown evidence of processing 4-androstene-3,17-dione in vivo. An extensive analytical method development, including LLE, HPLC-DAD, MS, andNMR was performed to verify the product and to enable a quantitative analysis. Protocols for analytical and preparative separation have been developed, using binaphtol as internal standard. Both the growth pattern and the bioconversion ratewere unaffected by the presence of binaphtol in the bioreactor. The enzyme was purified by immobilised metal affinity and ion exchange chromatography, resulting in low in vitro activity.
