  • Detection mechanism studies of SO2 on Pt / SiO2 system
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Experiment was performed with Pt-gate SiC-FET sensors to study the detection mechanism of the sensors. The sensing measurement showed that oxygen influenced the response quite strongly. The sensor response became larger in the presence of oxygen. Experiment with mass spectroscopy indicated the formation of SO3 during the sensing measurement. Further experiment with DRIFT spectroscopy showed the formation of sulfate species on the oxide surface, accompanied by the disappearance of the silanol groups. An explanatory model was built based on quantum-chemical calculations. The results strengthened the experimental results by showing that it was more energetically favorable for SO2 to oxidize into SO3 before being adsorbed on the oxide surface. It was also observed that the overall adsorption reaction was exothermic, the activation energy for the SO2 oxidation was 48,75 kJ/mol, and the rate limiting step was the desorption of SO3 from the Pt surface.

  • The effect of acute myocardial ischemia on the rotation axis of the left ventricle
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: We have developed a method to assess the axis around which the left ventricle (LV) rotates. The aim was to assess the effect of acute regional ischemia on the otation axis. Method: Mid‐LAD occlusion was induced in six anesthetised pigs and echocardiographic images were recorded at baseline and after LAD occlusion. The rotation axis was calculated at three different levels of the LV throughout the cardiac cycle. Results: The direction of the rotation axis was significantly changed (p<0.01) after LAD occlusion, being directed towards the ischemic area. AV‐plane displacement was significantly reduced (p<0.05) during ischemia. No significant difference in twist or otation amplitudes was found. Conclusion: This new method of assessing rotational function seems as sensitive as AV‐plane displacement and superior to traditional rotation and twist parameters in detecting dysfunction in acute ischemic myocardium. The rotation axis method has the advantage of potentially identifying areas with dysfunction.

  • The rotation axis of the left ventricle : a new concept derived from ultrasound data in healthy individuals
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: The axis around which the left ventricle (LV) rotates has never previously been described. The aim was to develop a method to calculate the spatial motion of the rotation axis throughout the cardiac cycle. Method: By constructing a model of the LV, based on dimensions and rotation values at the basal, mid ventricular and apical levels, a rotation axis could be calculated at each level in 39 healthy subjects. The transition plane, defined as the level without rotation, where basal and apical rotation meet was also calculated. Results: The rotation axis was not congruent to the longitudinal axis of the LV at any time point. A significant and specific mean direction for each of the rotation axes for the majority of the tested time points displayed a physiological pattern. Conclusion: This new method introduces a new concept in cardiac function and provides further insight into the complexity of LV mechanics.

  • FoxP3+ T-Cells in Patients with B-Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Express Cytolytic Markers and Kill Autologous B-Cells
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recent reports indicate that infiltration of FoxP3+ cells into the tumor area may be associated with better overall survival of patients with B-cell malignancies, which is in contrast to patients with non-hematopoetic tumors. Here, we demonstrate a possible mechanism to these findings. Since the tumor cell in lymphoma originates from the immune system we hypothesized that FoxP3+ T regulatory cells (Tregs) may have a suppressive role in tumor progression in patients with B-cell malignancies. Peripheral blood was collected from 14 patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) and their Tregs were evaluated for cytolytic markers such as FasL and CD107a. We found that both conventional Tregs (CD4+ FoxP3+CD127low T-cells) and FoxP3+CD127high T-cells were significantly increased in patients with B-CLL compared to healthy controls. Further, both groups of FoxP3+ cells displayed higher expression of the degranulation marker CD107a indicating perforin/granzyme release. A flow cytometry-based cytotoxicity assay demonstrated that purified Tregs  from both patients and healthy controls could kill autologous B-cells in vitro. In conclusion, FoxP3+ T-cells in patients with CLL show effector phenotype and may be involved in tumor cell control by their natural capacity to kill B-cells.

  • Peripheral T Lymphocytes, Including FoxP3+ T-Cells, Exhibit a Cytotoxic Phenotype in Patients with B-Cell Lymphoma
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recent studies have shown that high levels of FoxP3+ cells within lymphoma-affected lymph nodes are associated with a better outcome of patients with B-cell lymphoma. This finding is opposite to what has been seen in patients with solid non-hematopoietic tumors. In an attempt to better understand the role of FoxP3+ cell in lymphoma, we collected peripheral blood from 17 patients and determined the level of T regulatory cells (CD3+CD4+FoxP3+CD127low lymphocytes) and FoxP3+CD127high T-cells (CD3+CD4+FoxP3+CD127high lymphocytes). The two subgroups of FoxP3+ T-cells, as well as conventional FoxP3- T-cells, were further analyzed for presence of cytotoxic markers such as FasL and CD107a. Patient plasma was analyzed for the immunosuppressive cytokines IL-10 and TGF-β. Finally, the proliferative capacity of T-cells was assessed using Alamar Blue assay. In lymphoma patients, both FoxP3+ T-cells and conventional T-cells had elevated levels of cytotoxic markers. No significant increase in IL-10 or TGF-β was detected and most patient T-cells had a normal proliferative capacity. This is the first, to our knowledge, study showing a cytotoxic phenotype of FoxP3+ T-cells in patients with B-cell lymphoma.

  • Do you recognize hon, han and hen? : How binary and gender-neutral pronouns affect gender categorization in face recognition
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study tested how pronouns affect gender categorization in a face recognition task. Participants (N = 362) memorized a gender-ambiguous face presented with either a binary pronoun (she, he) a gender-neutral pronoun (hen) or without a pronoun (control) into memory. In the recognition task, participants searched for the gender-ambiguous face in a series of typically feminine and masculine faces. Results indicated that participants who memorized the face with a feminine pronoun spent more time looking at feminine faces than masculine faces when searching for the target face. The opposite was found when the face was presented with a masculine pronoun. This shows that binary pronouns activate binary gender categorization, which speeds up the process of face recognition. Presenting a gender-ambiguous face with a gender-neutral pronoun led to participants spending more time looking at feminine faces than masculine faces, which may be due to the stimuli being biased towards femininity. However, participants who reported not having categorized the target face spent an equal time looking at feminine and masculine faces, which may indicate that the gender-ambiguous face had not been gender categorized.
