  • An automatic method for measurements of arterial intima-media thickness using ultrasonic B-mode data
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acoustical Imaging. - Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands. - 9789400726185 - 9789400726192 ; 31, s. 115-122
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We have previously developed algorithms that use B-mode cineloops for simultaneous measurements of arterial diameter change and longitudinal movement of the arterial wall. In this study the lumen diameter algorithm was extended to also measure arterial intima-media thickness of the far wall. To optimize the algorithm the influence of the lateral width of the region-of-interest (1 pixel, 0.1 mm, 0.5 mm, 1 mm, 2.5 mm and 5 mm) was evaluated. The algorithm estimated intima-media thickness at diastole automatically by measuring the distance between the two positions where the laterally averaged B-mode intensity envelope crosses a threshold value relative to the maximum amplitudes of the intimal and adventitial echoes, respectively. The sub-pixel resolution is achieved by solving the equation of a straight line between the two samples on either side of the threshold value. The measurements were performed on 20 healthy normotensive volunteers (age 25–57 years) on the common carotid artery 2–3 cm proximal to the bifurcation. For the 2.5-mm width, which was considered the best, the intima-media thickness was mean 646 μm (SD 66) for men and 613 μm (SD 68) for women. The systematic difference was −5 μm and the random difference was 31 μm. The CV was 4.9%. The study indicates that the reproducibility is sufficient for in vivo studies when the width of the region-of-interest is 1.0 mm or wider.

  • Comforting an orphaned nation : Representations of international adoption and adopted Koreans in Korean popular culture
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a study of popular cultural representations of international adoption and adopted Koreans in Western countries. The study is carried out from a postcolonial perspective and uses a cultural studies reading of four feature films and four popular songs as primary sources. The aim is to examine how nationalism is articulated in various ways in light of the colonial experiences in modern Korean history and recent postcolonial developments within contemporary Korean society. The principal question addressed is: What are the implications for a nation depicting itself as one extended family and which has sent away so many of its own children, and what are the reactions from a culture emphasising homogeneity when encountering and dealing with the adopted Koreans? After an introductory chapter, Chapter 2 gives the history of international adoption from Korea, and Chapter 3 is an account of the development of the adoption issue in the political discussion. Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 analyse the cinematic and lyrical representations of adopted Koreans in four feature films and popular songs respectively. Chapter 4 considers the gendering of the colonised nation and the maternalisation of roots, drawing on theories of nationalism as a gendered discourse. Chapter 5 examines the issue of hybridity and the relationship between Koreanness and Whiteness, which are related to the notions of third space, mimicry and passing. Linked to studies of national division, reunification and family separation, Chapter 6 looks at the adopted Koreans as symbols of a fractured and fragmented nation. Chapter 7 focuses on the emergence of a global Korean community, with regards to theories of globalisation, diasporas and transnationalism. In the concluding chapter, the study argues that the Korean adoption issue can be conceptualised as an attempt at overcoming a difficult past and imagining a common future for all ethnic Koreans at a transnational level.

  • d-wave Josephson Junctions
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The properties of d-wave YBCO Josephson junctions and dc-SQUIDs with high misorientation angles have beenstudied experimentally .The predominant d-wave symmetry of the pairing wavefunction in high-Tc superconductors has, to a large extent, beena hinderance in applications, but it also makes it possible to fabricate devices with novel properties that may be suitablefor applications in the quantum regime; one particulary interesting property is a strong second harmonic component in the current-phase relation ofjunctions with the electrodes oriented in a node-lobe arrangement; so-called 0-45 junctions. The work has been focused on the properties of grain-boundary 0-45 dc-SQUIDs: Their dc-properties as wellas the effects of a strong second harmonic component on the dynamics have been studied experimentally andmodelled numerically. The experimental results can be explained by taking into account the meandering ofthe grain boundary which in combination with a strong orientational dependence of the transport properties due to thed-wave symmetry results in interfaces with properties that change dramatically over a length scale of 50-100 nm.The properties of grain-boundary YBCO 0-45 junctions have been studied in the quantum regime. Macroscopicquantum tunnelling has been demonstrated in these junctions and microwave spectroscopy is here used to verifythe presence of discrete energy levels. The quality factor of the junction has been experimentally determined to 40+-10, a much higher value than previously believed to be possible in high-Tc structures. Finally, the possibility of using high-T$_c$ structures to build qubits is discussed. There is now a renewedinterest in this possibility, especially in light of our recent results whichdemonstrate that the inherent dissipation mechanisms are much less detrimental to coherent phenomena than previously feared.

  • Dynamics of high-angle grain boundary YBCO Josephson junctions
  • 2004
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis describes experimental investigations of properties of high-angle YBa2Cu3O7−δ(YBCO)bicrystal Josephson junctions and SQUIDs fabricated on SrTiO3-substrates. The main focus of theinvestigation has been on the effects of the predominant d-wave symmetry of the superconductingwavefunction in YBCO on transport properties and dynamics. At a high-angle grain-boundary interface between two high-temperature superconductors Andreevstates can form, the current carried by these states hasπ-periodic component which flows in a direc-tion opposite of the usual Josephson current. Asymmetric high-angle grain boundaries also exhibit acritical current which is four orders of magnitude lower than symmetric lower-angle junctions, thiscan be attributed to the node-lobe arrangement of the the superconducting order parameter.High-angle grain-boundary dc-SQUIDs that have been studied which exhibit unusual dynamicssuch as a relative ”shift” of the positions of the positive and negative modulation and a highly non-sinusoidal dependence on the external field. This behavior vanished when moving to very narrowjunctions. These result are explained using a semi-classical model which assumes the presence ofa2ndharmonic in the current-phase relation. Numerical simulations confirm that this model is inqualitative agreement with experimental results. The properties of sub-micron sized junctions have also been studied. These exhibit some un-usual behavior. These junctions have been used to study the tunnelling spectra since the high normalresistance means that it is possible to study energies close to the gap. Finally, some general properties of high-angle Josephson Junctions are discussed. It is arguedthat some seemingly inconsistent experimental results can be explained using a multi-channel modelwhich accounts for the wiggling and faceting of the interface.

  • Människor, djur och varelser i miniatyr : Flerartliga förbindelser i den gropkeramiska kulturen
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis attempts to understand the relationships between humans and animals in the Middle Neolithic (c. 3300-2300 BC) Pitted Ware culture (PWC) in Eastern Sweden and the Baltic islands of Gotland and Åland. This is accomplished through an examination of the zoomorphic and anthropomorphic clay figurines that have been found on many PWC sites in the study area, and to a lesser extent also the use and deposition of animal bones. The archaeological material is approached using a theoretical framework that draws upon hunter-gatherer relational ontologies and new materialisms.Comparisons between the anthropomorphic figurines and the zoomorphic figurines reveal clear morphological differences that are not attributable to the bodily differences between humans and animals. Instead, it is argued that they indicate contrasts in human-animal and human-human interactions respectively, and that they also had bearing on the engagements and relationships between humans and figurines. The chronological and geographical distribution of figurines further suggest that the anthropomorphic figurines represent a younger, more localized development in the PWC figurine tradition commencing around 2900 BC. This could possibly also be understood against the backdrop of a general ‘anthropomorphization’ in Europe during the 3rd millennium BC and the wider societal changes in northern Europe. In contrast to the figurines, which are uncommon in burials and deposits, animal bones have obviously been selectively deposited at many PWC sites. Unmodified animal bones found in certain features, deposits and burials reveal interesting patterns, where bones from the limbs and heads are overrepresented. The parts chosen can be described as those that relate to the perception and movements of the various animals deposited. The treatment of the animal bones might be understood as a way of dealing with a persistent animal awareness that resided in the bones and needed to be controlled.Zoomorphic figurines and animal bones thus seem to have had complementary uses at the PWC sites and configured human-animal relations in different ways. The figurines might have been involved in influencing prospective prey animals, while the deposition of animal bones was a means of handling animals that had been successfully killed.

  • Stadens gränsplatser : Kungliga Poliskammaren och vardagens omstridda rum i Stockholm, 1776–1835
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation explores the interaction between the inhabitants of Stockholm and the constables of the Royal Police Chamber—Sweden’s first police force—during a period in the city’s history that is associated with stagnation from the perspectives of demography and economy. The aim is to understand how space was negotiated and changed over time through everyday interactions and practices. The central question is why certain places in the urban space of Stockholm were contested. The investigation is carried out through three thematic parts. Each part investigates kinds of disorder that exhibited clear elements of spatial contestation: homelessness, pub keeping, and sanitation. Each theme is explored by considering the cases that occurred in 1776–1777, 1804, and 1835. On an empirical level, the dissertation provides new information about the practices exercised in the meeting between Stockholm’s population and its agents of order. On a more abstract level, the dissertation engages critically with and adds to current theoretical perspectives on cities and spatiality. The interaction between the ideas and reality of urban space is clarified. Suggestions are made on possible approaches to studies of cities of comparable size and in a similar period. The answer to the central question—why certain places within the urban space of Stockholm were contested—is that they were border or peripheral places. At these places, the ordered city was mainly under threat and negations could occur. Rather than an unchanging city due to stagnation, a dynamic city with micro-geographies that changed in several ways is shown. The dissertation exposes previously underexplored depths of the studied time period. Households became smaller and excluded people who took to the city by “rough sleeping”. Pubs and similar drinking establishments became more distinguished from private homes and less mobile in the urban space. The flows of uncleanliness became more controlled and directed away from the public sphere of the streets. A central result is that an urban space consisting of porous boundaries and general transgressions gave way to one of hardened and more stabilized borders. Contestation and negotiations about borders moved where these were placed in Stockholm. Small, everyday geographies shifted and became more well-organized and closed. The boundaries of the city became, over time, clearer and more essential to keep. New border places arose and old ones were reshaped. By analyzing the practices of the city’s inhabitants and police force, it is apparent how an urban space became atomized.
