  • Robust and Large-Area Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Nanofilms Enabled by Air/DMSO Interfacial Self-Assembly-Confined Synthesis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society. - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 13:2, s. 3336-3348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The modular construction of defect-free nanofilms with a large area remains a challenge. Herein, we present a scalable strategy for the preparation of calix[4]pyrrole (C[4]P)-based nanofilms through acryl hydrazone reaction conducted in a tetrahydrazide calix[4]pyrrole (CPTH)-based self-assembled layer at the air/DMSO interface. With this strategy, robust, regenerable, and defect-free nanofilms with an exceptionally large area (?750 cm2) were constructed. The thickness and permeability of the film systems can be fine-tuned by varying the precursor concentration or by changing another building block. A typical nanofilm (C[4]P-TFB, ?67 nm) depicted high water flux (39.9 L m-2 h-1 under 1 M Na2SO4), narrow molecular weight cut-off value (?200 Da), and promising antifouling properties in the forward osmosis (FO) process. In addition, the nanofilms are stable over a wide pH range and tolerable to different organic solvents. Interestingly, the introduction of C[4]P endowed the nanofilms with both outstanding mechanical properties and unique group-selective separation capability, laying the foundation for wastewater treatment and pharmaceutical concentration.

  • A structural equation modeling approach for the acceptance of driverless automated shuttles based on constructs from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and the Diffusion of Innovation Theory
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part F. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1369-8478 .- 1873-5517. ; 78, s. 58-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study investigated the attitudes and acceptance of automated shuttles in public transport among 340 individuals physically experiencing the automated shuttle ‘Emily’ from Easymile in a mixed traffic environment on the semi-public EUREF (Europäisches Energieforum) campus in Berlin. Automated vehicle acceptance was modelled as a function of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) constructs performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions, the Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT) constructs compatibility and trialability, as well as trust and automated shuttle sharing. The results show that after adding the DIT constructs, automated shuttle sharing, and trust to the model, the effect of performance expectancy on behavioural intention was no longer significant. Instead, compatibility with current travel was the strongest predictor of behavioural intention to use automated shuttles. It was further found that individuals who are willing to share rides in an automated shuttle with fellow travelers (i.e., automated shuttle sharing) and who trust automated shuttles (i.e., trust) are more likely to intend to use automated shuttles (i.e., behavioural intention). The highest mean rating was obtained for believing that automated shuttles are easy to use, while the lowest mean rating was obtained for feeling safe inside the automated shuttle without any type of supervision. The analysis revealed a preference for the supervision of the automated shuttle via an external control room to the supervision by a human steward onboard. We recommend future research to investigate the hypothesis that compatibility could serve as an even stronger predictor of the behavioural intention to use automated shuttles in public transport than performance expectancy. © 2021 The Author(s)

  • Nanocellulose/graphene oxide layered membranes : Elucidating their behaviour during filtration of water and metal ions in real time
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2040-3364 .- 2040-3372. ; 11:46, s. 22413-22422
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The deposition of a thin layer of graphene oxide onto cellulose nanofibril membranes, to form CNF-GO layered-composite membranes, dramatically enhances their wet-mechanical stability, water flux and capacity to adsorb water pollutants (P. Liu, C. Zhu and A. P. Mathew, J. Hazard. Mater., 2019, 371, 484-493). In this work, we studied in real time the behavior of these layered membranes during filtration of water and metal ion solutions by means of in situ SAXS and reactive molecular dynamics (ReaxFF) computational simulations. SAXS confirms that the GO layers limit the swelling and structural deformations of CNFs during filtration of aqueous solutions. Moreover, during filtration of metal ion solutions, the connection of the CNF-GO network becomes highly complex mass-fractal like, with an increment in the correlation length. In addition, after ion adsorption, the SAXS data revealed apparent formation of nanoparticles during the drying stage and particle size increase as a function of time during drying. The molecular dynamics simulations, on the other hand, provide a deep insight into the assembly of both components, as well as elucidating the motion of the metal ions that potentially lead to the formation of metal clusters during adsorption, confirming the synergistic behavior of GO and CNFs for water purification applications.
