  • DIII-D research advancing the physics basis for optimizing the tokamak approach to fusion energy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limits and regulate β N in the ITER baseline scenario, based on plasma response to probing 3D fields, was demonstrated. Finally, innovative tokamak operation using a negative triangularity shape showed many attractive features for future pilot plant operation.

  • Cooling rate effect on Young's modulus and hardness of a Zr-based metallic glass
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-8388. ; 509:7, s. 3269-3273
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is known that cooling rate can affect the atomic structure and thus may possibly affect the mechanical properties of metallic glasses (MGs). In spite of the considerable efforts on the cooling rate, its effect on the mechanical properties is controversial at the present time. In this study, we present a micromechanical study of the cooling-rate effect on Young's moduli and hardness of the cast bulks and melt-spun ribbons for a Zr(55)Pd(10)Cu(20)Ni(5)Al(10) metallic glass. Using the classic nanoindentation method, the Young's moduli of the ribbon samples obtained at higher cooling rates were measured which appeared to be much lower than those of the bulk samples. However, through further experiments on slice samples cut from the as-cast bulks and finite-element (FE) analyses, we have clearly demonstrated that the measured difference in elastic moduli was mainly caused by the sample thickness effect in nanoindentation tests. To overcome such a confounding effect, microcompression experiments were performed on the as-cast and as-spun MG samples, respectively. Being consistent with the findings from nanoindentation, the microcompression results showed that the cooling rate, as ranging from similar to 10(2) to similar to 10(6) K/s, essentially has no influence on the Young's modulus and hardness of the metallic glasses. • Micromechanical characterization of casting-induced inhomogeneity in an Al0.8CoCrCuFeNi high-entropy alloy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Scripta Materialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1359-6462. ; 64:9, s. 868-871
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The microstructural features and micromechanical behavior of individual phases in a cast Al0.8CoCrCuFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) were characterized by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and micro-compression tests. Use of neutron diffraction enabled the detection of a new phase which was otherwise unobservable by conventional X-ray diffraction. The identified phase constitution agreed well with the compositional analysis and the micro-compression results. The delicate microscale characterization of individual phase provides new insights for the design of novel HEAs with desirable mechanical properties. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. • The ‘Internet of Things’ enabled real-time scheduling for remanufacturing of automobile engines
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 185, s. 562-575
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Typical challenges that managers of remanufacturing face are composed of the lack of timely, accurate, and consistent information of remanufacturing resources. Therefore, it is difficult to implement real-time production scheduling for the shop floor. To address this problem, the authors applied the concept of the ‘Internet of Things’ to the remanufacturing of automobile engines to form an Internet of Manufacturing Things environment. Under the Internet of Manufacturing Things, an identification technology for disassembled engine parts was designed, and the real-time status of the remanufacturable resources can be monitored. Based on the captured remanufacturing information, a real-time production scheduling method was developed, and a mathematical model was developed to achieve cost reduction, dynamic management of remanufacturable resources, and energy consumption decrease. To obtain an optimal solution, a Pareto-based optimization method was used. Finally, a case study was performed to analyze the effectivity of the proposed method. The results showed that the remanufacturing cost and energy consumption were reduced by 34% and 34% respectively, and the worker load rate was more balanced. These improvements can contribute to more sustainable development and greener production within the remanufacturing industry, especially for remanufacturing of automobile engines.

  • Melting assessment on the effect of nonuniform Y-shaped fin upon solid–liquid phase change in a thermal storage tank
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study provides an alternative solution to the improvement on solid–liquid phase change by designing a Y-shaped fin in a nonuniform pattern along the gravity direction. A numerical model is established and validated through the present measurement and data in literature. Six cases with different Y-shaped fins and locations are designed and compared to the original straight fin case. Thermal assessments on the melting fraction, temperature field, velocity distribution, and uniformity for melting are made. Results demonstrate that the nonuniform melting features caused by the local natural convection are significantly eliminated by the novel nonuniform fin structure. The time required for melting the lower PCM is found to occupy more than 50% of the completely melting time. The accurate local heat transfer enhancement measures (bottom enhancement) are conducive to markedly reduce the full melting time by 21.5%, compared to the uniform fin pattern. Upon using finned thermal storage tank for a mobilized thermal storage truck (bare tube tank), the initial investment increases by 44.9% but the profit increases by 393.6% and the payback period reduces by 69.2%. The use of fin tube in heat storage tank can quickly obtain higher returns based on a small increase in initial investment. This work provides new insights into the understandings of the transient phase change process and the strategies for guiding the design for thermal energy storage tank.

  • 50-μm thick flexible dopant-free interdigitated-back-contact silicon heterojunction solar cells with front MoOx coatings for efficient antireflection and passivation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 1094-4087. ; 30:12, s. 21309-21323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate experimentally a flexible crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell (SC) based on dopant-free interdigitated back contacts (IBCs) with thickness of merely 50 µm for, to the best of our knowledge, the first time. A MoOx thin film is proposed to cover the front surface and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) is boosted to over triple that of the uncoated SC. Compared with the four-time thicker SC, our thin SC is still over 77% efficient. Systematic studies show the front MoOx film functions for both antireflection and passivation, contributing to the excellent performance. A double-interlayer (instead of a previously-reported single interlayer) is identified at the MoOx/c-Si interface, leading to efficient chemical passivation. Meanwhile, due to the large workfunction difference, underneath the interface a strong built-in electric field is generated, which intensifies the electric field over the entire c-Si active layer, especially in the 50-µm thick layer. Photocarriers are expelled quickly to the back contacts with less recombined and more extracted. Besides, our thin IBC SC is highly flexible. When bent to a radius of 6 mm, its PCE is still 76.6% of that of the unbent cell. Fabricated with low-temperature and doping-free processes, our thin SCs are promising as cost-effective, light-weight and flexible power sources.

  • Scalable Fabrication of Conductive Lines by Patterned Wettability-Assisted Bar-Coating for Low Cost Paper-Based Circuits
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials Interfaces. - : Wiley-VCH Verlag. - 2196-7350. ; 6:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patterning technology on the paper based on wettability difference for paper-based devices has attracted significant attention for its low cost, easy degradability, and high flexibility. Here, conductive lines are rapidly prepared by patterned wettability-assisted bar-coating for low cost paper-based circuits. It is found that 7 s plasma treatment time for acquiring wettability difference is optimal, which resulted in not only effective splitting of the liquid film but also highly consistent line width with mask. Moreover, low retention force of hydrophobic surface is imperative for self-confinement of the ink into hydrophilic areas, especially for ink with high solid content. The sheet resistance of patterns can reach 5 Ω â—» −1 after 980 nm laser sintering when using 50 wt% solid content ink with 110 cP viscosity. The geometries of line patterns, i.e., line width and spacing, can be readily tuned by varying the designed size of mask patterns. As-prepared conductive patterns show good conductivity even after 500 bending cycles at 2 mm bending radius. It is believed that this study will provide deeper understanding of wettability difference-assisted patterning process and represents a general strategy for selective wetting, especially for high viscosity ink.

  • Boosting Industrial-Level CO2 Electroreduction of N-Doped Carbon Nanofibers with Confined Tin-Nitrogen Active Sites via Accelerating Proton Transport Kinetics
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : John Wiley and Sons Inc. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 33:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of highly efficient robust electrocatalysts with low overpotential and industrial-level current density is of great significance for CO2 electroreduction (CO2ER), however the low proton transport rate during the CO2ER remains a challenge. Herein, a porous N-doped carbon nanofiber confined with tin-nitrogen sites (Sn/NCNFs) catalyst is developed, which is prepared through an integrated electrospinning and pyrolysis strategy. The optimized Sn/NCNFs catalyst exhibits an outstanding CO2ER activity with the maximum CO FE of 96.5%, low onset potential of −0.3 V, and small Tafel slope of 68.8 mV dec−1. In a flow cell, an industrial-level CO partial current density of 100.6 mA cm−2 is achieved. In situ spectroscopic analysis unveil the isolated Sn-N site acted as active center for accelerating water dissociation and subsequent proton transport process, thus promoting the formation of intermediate *COOH in the rate-determining step for CO2ER. Theoretical calculations validate pyrrolic N atom adjacent to the Sn-N active species assisted reducing the energy barrier for *COOH formation, thus boosting the CO2ER kinetics. A Zn-CO2 battery is designed with the cathode of Sn/NCNFs, which delivers a maximum power density of 1.38 mW cm−2 and long-term stability.

  • CsPb(IxBr1-x)(3) solar cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Science Bulletin. - : ELSEVIER. - 2095-9273. ; 64:20, s. 1532-1539
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Owing to its nice performance, low cost, and simple solution-processing, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cell (PSC) becomes a promising candidate for next-generation high-efficiency solar cells. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) has boosted from 3.8% to 25.2% over the past ten years. Despite the rapid progress in PCE, the device stability is a key issue that impedes the commercialization of PSCs. Recently, all-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites have attracted much attention due to their better stability compared with their organic-inorganic counterpart. In this progress report, we summarize the properties of CsPb(IxBr1-x)(3) and their applications in solar cells. The current challenges and corresponding solutions are discussed. Finally, we share our perspectives on CsPb(IxBr1-x)(3) solar cells and outline possible directions to further improve the device performance. (C) 2019 Science China Press.
