  • The Scales Project, a cross-national dataset on the interpretation of thermal perception scales
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific data. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2052-4463. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal discomfort is one of the main triggers for occupants' interactions with components of the built environment such as adjustments of thermostats and/or opening windows and strongly related to the energy use in buildings. Understanding causes for thermal (dis-)comfort is crucial for design and operation of any type of building. The assessment of human thermal perception through rating scales, for example in post-occupancy studies, has been applied for several decades; however, long-existing assumptions related to these rating scales had been questioned by several researchers. The aim of this study was to gain deeper knowledge on contextual influences on the interpretation of thermal perception scales and their verbal anchors by survey participants. A questionnaire was designed and consequently applied in 21 language versions. These surveys were conducted in 57 cities in 30 countries resulting in a dataset containing responses from 8225 participants. The database offers potential for further analysis in the areas of building design and operation, psycho-physical relationships between human perception and the built environment, and linguistic analyses.

    • We consider the problem of how decision making can be fair when the underlying probabilistic model of the world is not known with certainty. We argue that recent notions of fairness in machine learning need to explicitly incorporate parameter uncertainty, hence we introduce the notion of Bayesian fairness as a suitable candidate for fair decision rules. Using balance, a definition of fairness introduced in (Kleinberg, Mullainathan, and Raghavan 2016), we show how a Bayesian perspective can lead to well-performing and fair decision rules even under high uncertainty.

  • Multi-centennial Holocene climate variability in proxy records and transient model simulations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Quaternary Science Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 0277-3791 .- 1873-457X. ; 296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Variability on centennial to multi-centennial timescales is mentioned as a feature in reconstructions of the Holocene climate. As more long transient model simulations with complex climate models become available and efforts have been made to compile large proxy databases, there is now a unique opportunity to study multi-centennial variability with greater detail and a large amount of data than earlier. This paper presents a spectral analysis of transient Holocene simulations from 9 models and 120 proxy records to find the common signals related to oscillation periods and geographic dependencies and discuss the implications for the potential driving mechanisms. Multi-centennial variability is significant in most proxy records, with the dominant oscillation periods around 120–130 years and an average of 240 years. Spectra of model-based global mean temperature (GMT) agree well with proxy evidence with significant multi-centennial variability in all simulations with the dominant oscillation periods around 120–150 years. It indicates a comparatively good agreement between model and proxy data. A lack of latitudinal dependencies in terms of oscillation period is found in both the model and proxy data. However, all model simulations have the highest spectral density distributed over the Northern hemisphere high latitudes, which could indicate a particular variability sensitivity or potential driving mechanisms in this region. Five models also have differentiated forcings simulations with various combinations of forcing agents. Significant multi-centennial variability with oscillation periods between 100 and 200 years is found in all forcing scenarios, including those with only orbital forcing. The different forcings induce some variability in the system. Yet, none appear to be the predominant driver based on the spectral analysis. Solar irradiance has long been hypothesized to be a primary driver of multi-centennial variability. However, all the simulations without this forcing have shown significant multi-centennial variability. The results then indicate that internal mechanisms operate on multi-centennial timescales, and the North Atlantic-Arctic is a region of interest for this aspect.

  • Design as a source of international competitive advantage for SMOPEC firms
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Learning. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1471-8197 .- 1741-8089. ; 18:3, s. 277-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the rise of the international markets, firms need to be more creative and dynamic in order to gain success internationally. Design as an intangible non-price factor offers efficiently a unique way to achieve an international competitive advantage over competitors. This study presents theoretical consideration of design, its dimensions, and how design can provide a distinct competitive advantage in ever-increasing global competition. The theoretical consideration helps form a conceptual framework, conducted by descriptive research, emphasising the internal and external influences that affect the ways of using design as a source of international competitive advantage amongst small and open economies (SMOPECs). This study has found that design resource as firm’s internal resource needs to be valuable and rare, and offer a unique way to generate a value creating competitive strategy. To get the utmost benefits of design, it should be used strategically and linked to a firm’s business strategy and other key functions. The theoretical consideration further showed explicitly that a positive correlation exists between design and firm’s business success. However, it becomes clear that there are differences between the insight of knowledge and the reality of using it.

  • Probing the historic thermal and humid environment in a 2000-year-old ancient underground tomb and enlightenment for cultural heritage protection and preventive conservation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Energy and Buildings. - : Elsevier. - 0378-7788 .- 1872-6178. ; 251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development and utilization of urban underground space have contributed to more excavation of ancient tombs in recent years. The microclimate in the burial environment is crucial for the sustainability of historical artifacts. In this paper, the variation in thermal and humid conditions during the burial time from the closure of a tomb to excavation was investigated by field testing and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The selected object is the famous M1 tomb chamber of the mausoleum Zhang An-shi, which has a 2000-year history. It was found that the average air temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) of the M1 tomb chamber before excavation were 12.7 °C and 93.0%, respectively. The results of the CFD simulation suggest that the burial time of an ancient tomb consists of a very short variable phase and a long stable phase. The very beginning phase may be as short as 0.3 h. The dramatic changes in temperature and RH were more than 10 °C and 20%, respectively. Consequently, dramatic changes in the thermal and humid environment will trigger the deterioration of historical artifacts. Current findings further suggest that the local annual average temperature is optimal for the conservation of underground artifacts excavated from the soil thermostatic layer. This study paves the way for characterizing the environment of an ancient tomb chamber, as well as museum design, energy savings that support cultural heritage protection and preventive conservation.
