  • Discovery of carbon-based strongest and hardest amorphous material

    • Carbon is one of the most fascinating elements due to its structurally diverse allotropic forms stemming from its bonding varieties (sp, sp2, and sp3). Exploring new forms of carbon has always been the eternal theme of scientific research. Herein, we report the amorphous (AM) carbon materials with high fraction of sp3 bonding recovered from compression of fullerene C60 under high pressure and high temperature previously unexplored. Analysis of photoluminescence and absorption spectra demonstrates that they are semiconducting with a bandgap range of 1.5–2.2 eV, comparable to that of widely used amorphous silicon. Comprehensive mechanical tests demonstrate that the synthesized AM-III carbon is the hardest and strongest amorphous material known so far, which can scratch diamond crystal and approach its strength. The produced AM carbon materials combine outstanding mechanical and electronic properties, and may potentially be used in photovoltaic applications that require ultrahigh strength and wear resistance.

  • Crystallography of low Z material at ultrahigh pressure : Case study on solid hydrogen

    • Diamond anvil cell techniques have been improved to allow access to the multimegabar ultrahigh-pressure region for exploring novel phenomena in condensed matter. However, the only way to determine crystal structures of materials above 100 GPa, namely, X-ray diffraction (XRD), especially for low Z materials, remains nontrivial in the ultrahigh-pressure region, even with the availability of brilliant synchrotron X-ray sources. In this work, we perform a systematic study, choosing hydrogen (the lowest X-ray scatterer) as the subject, to understand how to better perform XRD measurements of low Z materials at multimegabar pressures. The techniques that we have developed have been proved to be effective in measuring the crystal structure of solid hydrogen up to 254 GPa at room temperature [C. Ji et al., Nature 573, 558–562 (2019)]. We present our discoveries and experiences with regard to several aspects of this work, namely, diamond anvil selection, sample configuration for ultrahigh-pressure XRD studies, XRD diagnostics for low Z materials, and related issues in data interpretation and pressure calibration. We believe that these methods can be readily extended to other low Z materials and can pave the way for studying the crystal structure of hydrogen at higher pressures, eventually testing structural models of metallic hydrogen.

  • Transport behavior and thermoelectric properties of SnSe/SnS heterostructure modulated with asymmetric strain engineering

    • Strain engineering of two-dimensional materials provides specific regulation method for the crystal structure, electric transport behavior and hence thermoelectric properties. Since the layer components of the van der Waals heterojunction exhibit discrepant response to strains, it provides a platform for manipulation of emergent electronic and thermoelectric properties. Here, motivated by the promising thermoelectric materials SnSe and its analogue, we design a specific high-promising thermoelectric candidate based on SnSe-SnS heterostructures, focusing on the strain induced asymmetric bonding-transition and its effect on thermoelectric properties. The compressed SnS/SnSe hetero-bilayer shows significantly enhanced anisotropic electrical transport properties, due to depressed carrier scattering rate along the robust weak bonding direction. In this armchair direction, extremely high power factor values (3600 μW/(cm⋅K2)  for n-type and 4000 μW/(cm⋅K2) for p-type) are predicted at ∼1021 cm−3 at 700 K. We obtain a new state-of-the-art thermoelectric material with extremely high thermoelectric power factor and pave the way for strain engineering of thermoelectric van der Waals heterostructures with robust in-plane weak bonding.

  • Implementation of a real-time network traffic monitoring service with network functions virtualization

    • The Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) extends the functionality provided by Software-Defined Networking (SDN). It is a virtualization technology that aims to replace the functionality provided by traditional networking hardware using software solutions. Thereby, enabling cheaper and efficient network deployment and management. The use of NFV and SDN is anticipated to enhance the performance of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds. However, due to the presence of a large number of network devices in IaaS clouds offering a plethora of networked services, there is need to develop a traffic monitoring system for the efficient network. This paper proposes and validates an extensible SDN and NFV-enabled network traffic monitoring system. Using extensive experiments, we show that the proposed system can closely match the performance of traditional networks at cheaper costs and by adding more flexibility to network management tasks.

  • A century of trends in adult human height

    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5–22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3– 19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8– 144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

    • Thermodynamic and kinetic properties of absorbents are beneficial in evaluating their CO2 separation performance. In this study, the kinetic properties of CO2 in a hybrid choline-glycine/polyethylene glycol/water absorbent, including the liquid-side mass-transfer coefficient, enhancement factor, and reaction rate constant, were systematically determined through experimental measurements and data processing. Furthermore, an index referred to as “absorbility” was proposed to combine the kinetic properties determined in this study with the thermodynamic properties obtained in our previous study to evaluate the CO2 separation performance. Additionally, the regeneration performance of the hybrid absorbent was also conducted. The results show that the performance of the hybrid absorbent (30 wt% [Cho][Gly] + 10 wt% PEG200 + 60 wt% H2O) is comparable to that of aqueous monoethanolamine, and is thus promising for CO2 separation, considering its low regeneration temperature and low environmental impact.

    • The solubility of pure CO2, CH4, and N2 in the mixture of choline-2-pyrrolidine carboxylic acid ([Cho][Pro]) and polyethylene glycol (PEG200) (mass ratio = 1:2) was measured experimentally at temperatures from 308.15 to 338.15 K and pressures up to 28 bar, in which [Cho][Pro] is an ionic liquid and PEG200 is a cosolvent with the purpose to decrease the viscosity. It was found that [Cho][Pro]/PEG200 showed a good selectivity for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separation. The measured experimental data points from this work and others were further used to estimate the thermodynamic properties including the Henry's law constants for the gases in [Cho][Pro]/PEG200, the equilibrium constant for the reaction between CO2 and [Cho][Pro], the CO2 absorption enthalpy in [Cho][Pro]/PEG200, and so forth. The consistent results of the CO2 absorption enthalpy at infinite dilution prove the reliability of the thermodynamic properties obtained in this work. The thermodynamic properties of [Cho][Pro]/PEG200 were further compared with other three typical absorbents, and the absorption enthalpy is nearly half of that for 30 wt % MEA aqueous solution. At the same time, the theoretical amount of absorbents needed for [Cho][Pro]/PEG200 is much lower than that of H2O scrubbing. This shows that [Cho][Pro]/PEG200 is a promising absorbent

    • This work demonstrated the synthesis of (4E)-4-(4-(diphenylamino)benzylideneamino)-1,2-dihydro-1,5- dimethyl-2-phenylpyrazol-3-one (DBDDP) for Fe (III) detection in aqueous media and in the core of silica cross-linked micellar nanoparticles in living cells. The free DBDDP performed fluorescence enhancement due to Fe (III)-promoted hydrolysis in a mixed aqueous solution, while the DBDDP-doped silica cross-linked micellar nanoparticles (DBDDP-SCMNPs) performed an electron-transfer based fluorescence quenching of Fe (III) in living cells. The quenching fluorescence of DBDDP-SCMNPs and the concentration of Fe (III) exhibited a linear correlation, which was in accordance with the Stern-Volmer equation. Moreover, DBDDP-SCMNPs showed a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 ppm and an excellent selectivity against other metal ions. Due to the good solubility and biocompatibility, DBDDP-SCMNPs could be applied as fluorescence quenching nanosensors in living cells.
