  • Studies of the main cutting force at and near a cutting edge
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Wood and Wood Products. - 0018-3768 .- 1436-736X. ; 51:1, s. 43-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present work is a study of how various parameters affect the cutting forces at, and near a cutting edge when cutting wood at full speed and with all cutting edges of the tool. Statistical methods from experimental results are used to develop a model

  • Stabilized sediments in port constructions – important considerations and key experiences
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Geotechnical Engineering for Infrastructure and Development. - London : Research Publishing Services. - 9780727760678 ; , s. 1291-1296
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sea transport is increasing due to its environmental and economic benefits. The related expansion of ports and the development towards longer, wider and more deep-draught ships cause a huge need for dredging of sediments in fairways and ports. A large volume of these sediments are contaminated with heavy metals and organic contaminants. Millions of m3 of these sediments have to be dredged and handled in the coming years according to studies performed by the SMOCS/PortInfra network. The SMOCS project (Sustainable Management of Contaminated Sediments) within the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 has developed a guideline on management of contaminated sediments based on a sustainability approach. This paper deals with important considerations and key experiences in the different phases in a project from characterisation of sediments to be dredged, basic risk assessment, feasibility study and selection of handling options, planning and permitting, execution incl. detailed design considerations and field test and serviceability stage incl. monitoring. The stabilization/solidification technology has been applied implying the beneficial use of such treated dredged contaminated sediments in port constructions reducing the use of natural resources.

  • Studies of the cutting forces and the chip formation process when cutting frozen wood
  • 1993
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sawing during the winter has always been a problem for the sawmills in the northern parts of the world. Present work is an introductory study of the phenomena of frozen sawdust attached on the sawn surfaces (sawdust gluing). It is also a study of the cutting forces at and near a cutting edge when cutting frozen wood.

  • Slip and energy dissipation in conical friction joints loaded by impact-induced waves
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Impact Engineering. - 0734-743X .- 1879-3509. ; 4:2, s. 127-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conical friction (CF) joints subjected to impact-induced wave (IIW) loading are studied theoretically and experimentally. The system considered consists of a long, straight, cylindrical and linearly elastic rod which is impacted axially at one end, and which has a body attached by means of a CF joint at the opposite end. The conditions are such that the wave propagation is 1-D in the rod and can be neglected in the attached body, which is therefore treated as rigid. Slip and energy dissipation in the CF joint due to a single IIW load are determined as functions of four dimensionless parameters which represent the duration of the incident wave, the mass of the attached body, the behaviour of the CF joint and the initial slip due to a compressive preload. The conditions under which detachment occurs are also found. Results for repeated noninteracting IIW loads are derived from those obtained for a single IIW load. The theoretical results exhibit phenomena which may sometimes have a spectacular appearance. For example, four consecutive and identical IIW loads may have the effect of fastening, loosening, fastening again and, finally, detaching the CF joint. There is a fair agreement between theoretical and experimental results.

  • EISCAT_3D - a next-generation European radar system for upper atmosphere and geospace research
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Radio Science Bulletin. - 1024-4530. ; :333, s. 75-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The EISCAT Scientifi c Association, together with a number of collaborating institutions, has recently completed a feasibility and design study for an enhanced performance research radar facility to replace the existing EISCAT UHF and VHF systems. This study was supported by EU Sixth-Framework funding. The new radar retains the powerful multi-static geometry of the EISCAT UHF, but will employ phased arrays, direct-sampling receivers, and digital beamforming and beam steering. Design goals include, inter alia, a tenfold improvement in temporal and spatial resolution, an extension of the instantaneous measurement of full-vector ionospheric drift velocities from a single point to the entire altitude range of the radar, and an imaging capability to resolve small-scale structures. Prototype receivers and beamformers are currently being tested on a 48-element, 224 MHz array (the "Demonstrator") erected at the Kiruna EISCAT site, using the EISCAT VHF transmitter as an illuminator.

  • Underwater communication link with iterative equalization
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: OCEANS 2006. - : IEEE Communications Society. - 1424401143
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper an acoustic underwater communication link is presented. The channel has severe inter symbol interference, which is dealt with by an iterative linear equalizer and a Turbo code. Experiments has been performed in the Baltic Sea using a 4QAM signal with bandwidth 4 kHz at a center frequency of 12 kHz. The raw data rate is 8 kbit/s but after reduction for error correction coding the net bit rate is 2.88 kbit/s. With a source level of 180 dB re. 1mu/Pa @ 1m and a single hydrophone receiver, a reliable communication is shown up to a distance of 60 km. Very important for a successful decoding is the initial synchronization, which also is discussed.
