  • Substandard and falsified medical products are a global public health threat. A pilot survey of awareness among physicians in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Public Health. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1741-3850 .- 1741-3842. ; 41:1, s. 95-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundSubstandard and falsified medical products are a public health threat, primarily associated with low- and middle-income countries. Today, the phenomenon also exists in high-income countries. Increased Internet access has opened a global market. Self-diagnosis and self-prescription have boosted the market for unregulated websites with access to falsified medicines.AimTo describe the state of knowledge and experience on SF medical products among emergency physicians (EPs) and general practitioners (GPs) in Sweden.MethodsAn online survey with anonymous answers from 100 EPs and 100 GPs. Physicians were recruited from TNS SIFO’s medical database. The term in the survey was ‘illegal and falsified medicines’ which was common in Sweden at that time. It corresponds well with the term ‘substandard and falsified medical products’ that the WHO launched shortly after our data collection. We report our results with this term.ResultsIn Sweden, 78.5% of the physicians had heard the term ‘illegal and falsified medicines’ and 36.5% had met patients they suspected had taken it. Physicians lacked awareness of the use of the reporting system and wanted more knowledge about how to deal with patients who have possibly used falsified medicines.ConclusionsTo meet the public health threat of SF medical products, physicians need more knowledge.

  • The collection of narratives on strategies, ethics and public response of COVID-19 national vaccination process written by members of scholarly association Navigating Knowledge Landscapes Network
  • 2022
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The data collected in this dataset are narratives exploring public policies, attitudes, individual behaviors, and the collective experiences of the involved communities regarding vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic. The narratives were written by the members of the interdisciplinary research network Navigating Knowledge Landscapes (NKL; http://knowledge-landscapes.hiim.hr/). The members of the network are scholars belonging to different research disciplines and the aim of the network is to explore and discuss the individual aspects of citizens’ navigation of (new) knowledge in the digital society. An invitation to participate in this study was sent to members of the network on May 5, 2021. First responses were received on May 13, 2021, while the last response (including updated versions) was received on July 21, 2021. In total, 25 contributions were received from 27 scholars representing 17 countries (some scholars co-authored their contributions). Each of them described strategies, ethics, and public response of COVID-19 national vaccination process in their country.

  • "I'm not a jukebox where you push a button and then I sing": Negotiating Medicine Access in Physician–Patient Encounters
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - : Open Library of the Humanities. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 52:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article aims to deepen understandings of physician–patient encounters by investigating views and perceptions held by Swedish physicians and care seekers on medicine access. Through a relational approach and a focus on materialities of medicines as fluid and contingent, we conceptualize medicine access as situated everyday practices and physician–patient encounters as embedded in sociomaterial configurations. Through a bricolage approach, we present both quantitative and qualitative data from physicians and care seekers. We argue that diverging views on medicine access held by both parties do not necessarily position medical professional knowledge as opposed to lay knowledge. They are reflective of a shifting healthcare landscape and evolving expectations on provision and experiences of care services.

  • ”Allt fler falska mediciner mot covid-19 i omlopp”
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Dagens nyheter (DN debatt). - 1101-2447.

  • Exploring pharmacists’ perspectives about substandard and falsified medical products through interviews
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Exploratory Research in Clinical and Social Pharmacy. - 2667-2766. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundThe problem with substandard and falsified (SF) medical products may grow in high-income countries when e-commerce of medicines increases. Unauthorized websites offer medicines of insufficient quality. This underscores the importance of evaluating how the problem with SF medical products can be prevented from escalating. However, little is known about what knowledge and experience professionals working primarily with medicines have about the phenomenon.ObjectiveThis study was conducted to explore purposively selected pharmacists' experience and knowledge about SF medical products.MethodsTwelve individual interviews were conducted with purposively selected pharmacists between May 2021 and September 2021. An interview guide was used with specific questions about e-commerce, which focused on exploring pharmacists' experience and knowledge about SF medical products. The interviews lasted, on average, 49 min and were analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis.ResultsA main theme ‘Pharmacists as guardians of safe medicines’ emerged. This theme consisted of three categories pinpointing ‘risk factors’, ‘protective factors’, and ‘opportunities for improvement’ regarding SF medical products. Findings suggest that pharmacists can play a role in preventing the problem with SF medical products from escalating. Participants emphasized they were in this line of work to help patients and increase patient safety.ConclusionsPharmacists have the opportunity to empower the public with knowledge about SF medical products since they discuss medicines with many people every day. Awareness of risk factors for SF medical products enables pharmacists to guide patients to avoid risky purchases from unauthorized websites. To do this, better communication, and cooperation with patients and other healthcare professionals are needed.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: AllmänMedicin. - 0281-3513. ; 39:4, s. 39-42

  • Humanities for medical students? A qualitative study of a medical humanities curriculum in a medical school program.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Education. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1472-6920. ; 6:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humanities for medical students? A qualitative study of a medical humanities curriculum in a medical school program Caroline Wachtler, Susanne Lundin and Margareta Troein Lund University, Department of Clinical Sciences, General Practice/Family Medicine, Malmö University Hospital, SE 20502 Malmö, Sweden 2Lund University, Department of Ethnology, Finngatan 10, SE 223 62 Lund, Sweden BMC Medical Education 2006, 6:16 doi:10.1186/1472-6920-6-16 Published 6 March 2006 Abstract Background Today, there is a trend towards establishing the medical humanities as a component of medical education. However, medical humanities programs that exist within the context of a medical school can be problematic. The aim of this study was to explore problems that can arise with the establishment of a medical humanities curriculum in a medical school program. Methods Our theoretical approach in this study is informed by derridean deconstruction and by post-structuralist analysis. We examined the ideology of the Humanities and Medicine program at Lund University, Sweden, the practical implementation of the program, and how ideology and practice corresponded. Examination of the ideology driving the humanities and medicine program was based on a critical reading of all available written material concerning the Humanities and Medicine project. The practice of the program was examined by means of a participatory observation study of one course, and by in-depth interviews with five students who participated in the course. Data was analysed using a hermeneutic editing approach. Results The ideological language used to describe the program calls it an interdisciplinary learning environment but at the same time shows that the conditions of the program are established by the medical faculty's agenda. In practice, the "humanities" are constructed, defined and used within a medical frame of reference. Medical students have interesting discussions, acquire concepts and enjoy the program. But they come away lacking theoretical structure to understand what they have learned. There is no place for humanities students in the program. Conclusion A challenge facing cross-disciplinary programs is creating an environment where the disciplines have equal standing and contribution.
