  • Manifolds of magnetic ordered states and excitations in the almost Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet MgCr2 O4
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 97:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In spinels ACr2O4(A=Mg, Zn), realization of the classical pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet model is complicated by a strong spin-lattice coupling: the extensive degeneracy of the ground state is lifted by a magneto-structural transition at TN=12.5 K. We study the resulting low-temperature low-symmetry crystal structure by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The consistent features of x-ray low-temperature patterns are explained by the tetragonal model of Ehrenberg et al. [Pow. Diff. 17, 230 (2002)PODIE20885-715610.1154/1.1479738], while other features depend on sample or cooling protocol. A complex, partially ordered magnetic state is studied by neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarimetry. Multiple magnetic domains of configuration arms of the propagation vectors k1=(12120),k2=(1012) appear. The ordered moment reaches 1.94(3) μB/Cr3+ for k1 and 2.08(3) μB/Cr3+ for k2, if equal amount of the k1 and k2 phases is assumed. The magnetic arrangements have the dominant components along the [110] and [1-10] diagonals and a smaller c component. We use inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the spin excitations, which comprise a mixture of dispersive spin waves propagating from the magnetic Bragg peaks and resonance modes centered at equal energy steps of 4.5 meV. We interpret these as acoustic and optical spin wave branches, but show that the neutron scattering cross sections of transitions within a unit of two corner-sharing tetrahedra match the observed intensity distribution of the resonances. The distinctive fingerprint of clusterlike excitations in the optical spin wave branches suggests that propagating excitations are localized by the complex crystal structure and magnetic orders.

  • Three-Dimensional Fermi Surface of Overdoped La-Based Cuprates
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 121:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of overdoped high-temperature superconductors. In-plane and out-of-plane components of the Fermi surface are mapped by varying the photoemission angle and the incident photon energy. No k(z) dispersion is observed along the nodal direction, whereas a significant antinodal k(z) dispersion is identified for La-based cuprates. Based on a tight-binding parametrization, we discuss the implications for the density of states near the van Hove singularity. Our results suggest that the large electronic specific heat found in overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 cannot be assigned to the van Hove singularity alone. We therefore propose quantum criticality induced by a collapsing pseudogap phase as a plausible explanation for observed enhancement of electronic specific heat.

  • Investigation of the spin-1 honeycomb antiferromagnet BaNi2V2O8 with easy-plane anisotropy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 96:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetic properties of the two-dimensional, S = 1 honeycomb antiferromagnet BaNi2V2O8 have been comprehensively studied using dc susceptibility measurements and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. The magnetic excitation spectrum is found to be dispersionless within experimental resolution between the honeycomb layers, while it disperses strongly within the honeycomb plane where it consists of two gapped spin-wave modes. The magnetic excitations are compared to linear spin-wave theory allowing the Hamiltonian to be determined. The first-and second-neighbor magnetic exchange interactions are antiferromagnetic and lie within the ranges 10.90 meV <= J(n) <= 13.35 meV and 0.85 meV <= J(nn) <= 1.65 meV, respectively. The interplane coupling J(out) is four orders of magnitude weaker than the intraplane interactions, confirming the highly two-dimensional magnetic behavior of this compound. The sizes of the energy gaps are used to extract the magnetic anisotropies and reveal substantial easy-plane anisotropy and a very weak in-plane easy-axis anisotropy. Together these results reveal that BaNi2V2O8 is a candidate compound for the investigation of vortex excitations and Berezinsky-Kosterliz-Thouless phenomenon.

  • Linked-read whole-genome sequencing resolves common and private structural variants in multiple myeloma
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Blood Advances. - : American Society of Hematology. - 2473-9529 .- 2473-9537. ; 6:17, s. 5009-5023
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable and aggressive plasma cell malignancy characterized by a complex karyotype with multiple structural variants (SVs) and copy-number variations (CNVs). Linked-read whole-genome sequencing (lrWGS) allows for refined detection and reconstruction of SVs by providing long-range genetic information from standard short-read sequencing. This makes lrWGS an attractive solution for capturing the full genomic complexity of MM. Here we show that high-quality lrWGS data can be generated from low numbers of cells subjected to fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) without DNA purification. Using this protocol, we analyzed MM cells after FACS from 37 patients with MM using lrWGS. We found high concordance between lrWGS and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for the detection of recurrent translocations and CNVs. Outside of the regions investigated by FISH, we identified .150 additional SVs and CNVs across the cohort. Analysis of the lrWGS data allowed for resolution of the structure of diverse SVs affecting the MYC and t(11;14) loci, causing the duplication of genes and gene regulatory elements. In addition, we identified private SVs causing the dysregulation of genes recurrently involved in translocations with the IGH locus and show that these can alter the molecular classification of MM. Overall, we conclude that lrWGS allows for the detection of aberrations critical for MM prognostics and provides a feasible route for providing comprehensive genetics. Implementing lrWGS could provide more accurate clinical prognostics, facilitate genomic medicine initiatives, and greatly improve the stratification of patients included in clinical trials.

  • Multiple unconventional charge density wave transitions in LaPt2Si2 superconductor clarified with high-energy X-ray diffraction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications Materials. - : Springer Nature. - 2662-4443. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quasi-2D platinum-based rare earth intermetallic LaPt2Si2 has attracted attention as it exhibits strong interplay between charge density wave order and superconductivity. However, most of the results reported on this material come from theoretical calculations, preliminary bulk investigations and powder samples, which makes it difficult to uniquely determine the temperature evolution of its crystal structure and, consequently, of its charge density wave transition. Therefore, the published literature around LaPt2Si2 is often controversial. Here, by means of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction data, we clarify some of the poorly or partially understood aspects of the physics of LaPt2Si2. In particular, we resolve the complex evolution of its crystal structure and superstructures, identifying the temperature dependence of multiple density wave transitions in good quality LaPt2Si2 single crystals. According to our findings, on cooling from room temperature LaPt2Si2 undergoes a series of subtle structural transitions which can be summarised as follows: second order commensurate tetragonal (P4/n m m)-to-incommensurate structure followed by a first order incommensurate-to-commensurate orthorhombic (P m m n) transition and then a first order commensurate orthorhombic (P m m n)-to-commensurate tetragonal (P4/n m m). The structural transitions are accompanied by both incommensurate and commensurate superstructural distortions of the lattice. The observed behavior is compatible with discommensuration of the CDW in this material.

  • Q-dependent electron-phonon coupling induced phonon softening and non-conventional critical behavior in the CDW superconductor LaPt2Si2
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Science: Advanced Materials and Devices. - : Elsevier BV. - 2468-2284 .- 2468-2179. ; 8:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports the first experimental observation of phonons and their softening on single crystalline LaPt2Si2 via inelastic neutron scattering. From the temperature dependence of the phonon frequency in close proximity to the charge density wave (CDW) q-vector, we obtain a CDW transition temperature of TCDW = 230 K and a critical exponent β = 0.28 ± 0.03. This value is suggestive of a non-conventional critical behavior for the CDW phase transition in LaPt2Si2, compatible with a scenario of CDW discommensuration (DC). The DC would be caused by the existence of two CDWs in this material, propagating separately in the non equivalent (Si1–Pt2–Si1) and (Pt1–Si2–Pt1) layers, respectively, with transition temperatures TCDW−1 = 230 K and TCDW−2 = 110 K. A strong q-dependence of the electron-phonon coupling has been identified as the driving mechanism for the CDW transition at TCDW−1 = 230 K while a CDW with 3-dimensional character, and Fermi surface quasi-nesting as a driving mechanism, is suggested for the transition at TCDW−2 = 110 K. Our results clarify some aspects of the CDW transition in LaPt2Si2 which have been so far misinterpreted by both theoretical predictions and experimental observations and give direct insight into its actual temperature dependence.

  • Preparation of nanofibrous materials activated with metal clusters for active and long-lasting air filters
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Separation and Purification Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1383-5866 .- 1873-3794. ; 288, s. 120697-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanowire poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer membranes activated with Ag and Zn nanoclusters were prepared using the electrospinning method. The structure of membranes was varied by using different polymer concentrations in N,N-dimethylacetamide, electric field strength, and concentration of AgNO3 and ZnCl2 in an electrospinning solution. Materials synthesised were analysed by nitrogen sorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, particle filtration efficiency, and pressure drop methods. The concentration of Ag and Zn nanoclusters in PVDF membranes was established and the influence on nanofibers activity has been discussed. The hydrophobicity of membranes was tested using the wetting (contact) angle measurement method. The human influenza A virus (IAV) A/WSN/1933 (H1N1) strain was used to evaluate the virucidal activity of filtration materials. The virucidal activity increased with Ag nanoclusters concentration in fibres. The most hydrophilic nanofibers with Zn nanoclusters showed very high and practically concentration independent virucidal activity that was two orders of magnitude higher compared to materials activated with Ag nanoclusters.

  • The sounds of science-a symphony for many instruments and voices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : IOP Publishing. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; 95:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sounds of Science is the first movement of a symphony for many (scientific) instruments and voices, united in celebration of the frontiers of science and intended for a general audience. John Goodenough, the maestro who transformed energy usage and technology through the invention of the lithium-ion battery, opens the programme, reflecting on the ultimate limits of battery technology. This applied theme continues through the subsequent pieces on energy-related topics-the sodium-ion battery and artificial fuels, by Martin Mansson-and the ultimate challenge for 3D printing, the eventual production of life, by Anthony Atala. A passage by Gerianne Alexander follows, contemplating a related issue: How might an artificially produced human being behave? Next comes a consideration of consciousness and free will by Roland Allen and Suzy Lidstrom. Further voices and new instruments enter as Warwick Bowen, Nicolas Mauranyapin and Lars Madsen discuss whether dynamical processes of single molecules might be observed in their native state. The exploitation of chaos in science and technology, applications of Bose-Einstein condensates and the significance of entropy follow in pieces by Linda Reichl, Ernst Rasel and Roland Allen, respectively. Mikhail Katsnelson and Eugene Koonin then discuss the potential generalisation of thermodynamic concepts in the context of biological evolution. Entering with the music of the cosmos, Philip Yasskin discusses whether we might be able to observe torsion in the geometry of the Universe. The crescendo comes with the crisis of singularities, their nature and whether they can be resolved through quantum effects, in the composition of Alan Coley. The climax is Mario Krenn, Art Melvin and Anton Zeilinger's consideration of how computer code can be autonomously surprising and creative. In a harmonious counterpoint, his 'Guidelines for considering AIs as coauthors', Roman Yampolskiy concludes that code is not yet able to take responsibility for coauthoring a paper. An interlude summarises a speech by Zdenek Papousek. In a subsequent movement, new themes emerge as we seek to comprehend how far we have travelled along the path to understanding, and speculate on where new physics might arise. Who would have imagined, 100 years ago, a global society permeated by smartphones and scientific instruments so sophisticated that genes can be modified and gravitational waves detected?

  • Towards Realistic Smart Meter Privacy against Bayesian Inference
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Smart meters, now an essential component of modern power grids, allow energy providers to remotely monitor users' energy consumption in near real-time. While this technology offers numerous advantages for energy management and system efficiency, it also poses significant privacy concerns. High-resolution energy consumption data can reveal sensitive information about users' routines and activities, thus potentially jeopardizing their privacy. In particular, research has demonstrated that Bayesian inference attacks can effectively disaggregate smart meter data to deduce household appliance states and subsequently obtain sensitive user information. This thesis investigates the use of energy storage systems to protect smart meter data privacy against Bayesian inference attacks. Although several methods have been proposed in the literature that employ energy storage systems for this purpose, many rely on ideal assumptions such as lossless energy storage systems. To address this issue, a data-driven energy storage model that considers energy losses and capacity degradation has been proposed. Privacy leakage is quantified in terms of Bayesian risk, and control strategies are devised to minimize Bayesian risk while accounting for the energy storage system's operational constraints and economic implications. The findings reveal that non-idealities in energy storage systems significantly affect the privacy-preserving performance of control strategies. Moreover, incorporating degradation losses in the design of privacy-enhancing control strategies considerably improves battery life, albeit with some privacy loss.Taking into account the non-idealities of energy storage, this thesis introduces novel privacy-preserving control strategies using various adversarial models, which are classified based on their knowledge of the control system. These models include controller-aware and controller-unaware adversaries employing sequential hypothesis testing or maximum a posteriori detection. The proposed control strategies are evaluated through numerical simulations using real data and emulated energy storage systems. Additionally, the thesis provides a reference dataset of appliance power consumption, featuring detailed electrical measurements to support future smart meter privacy research. In summary, this work offers valuable insights and practical solutions for managing adversarial inference in cyber-physical systems, with potential applications extending to other sensor networks beyond smart meters.

  • Dimensional Reduction in Quantum Dipolar Antiferromagnets
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 116:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements on a dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet LiYbF4. For the thermal transition, the order-parameter critical exponent is found to be 0.20(1) and the specific-heat critical exponent -0.25(1). The exponents agree with the 2D XY/h(4) universality class despite the lack of apparent two-dimensionality in the structure. The order-parameter exponent for the quantum phase transitions is found to be 0.35(1) corresponding to (2 + 1)D. These results are in line with those found for LiErF4 which has the same crystal structure, but largely different T-N, crystal field environment and hyperfine interactions. Our results therefore experimentally establish that the dimensional reduction is universal to quantum dipolar antiferromagnets on a distorted diamond lattice.
