  • Alignment of the ALICE Inner Tracking System with cosmic-ray tracks
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiment devoted to investigating the strongly interacting matter created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC energies. The ALICE ITS, Inner Tracking System, consists of six cylindrical layers of silicon detectors with three different technologies; in the outward direction: two layers of pixel detectors, two layers each of drift, and strip detectors. The number of parameters to be determined in the spatial alignment of the 2198 sensor modules of the ITS is about 13,000. The target alignment precision is well below 10 mu m in some cases (pixels). The sources of alignment information include survey measurements, and the reconstructed tracks from cosmic rays and from proton-proton collisions. The main track-based alignment method uses the Millepede global approach. An iterative local method was developed and used as well. We present the results obtained for the ITS alignment using about 10(5) charged tracks from cosmic rays that have been collected during summer 2008, with the ALICE solenoidal magnet switched off.

  • New Grid Scheduling and Rescheduling Methods in the GrADS Project
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary form only given. The goal of the Grid Application Development Software (GrADS) project is to provide programming tools and an execution environment to ease program development for the grid. We present recent extensions to the GrADS software framework: 1. A new approach to scheduling workflow computations, applied to a 3D image reconstruction application; 2. A simple stop/migrate/restart approach to rescheduling grid applications, applied to a QR 3. A process-swapping approach to rescheduling, applied to an N-body simulation. Experiments validating these methods were carried out on both the GrADS MacroGrid (a small but functional grid) and the MicroGrid (a controlled emulation of the grid) and the results were demonstrated at the SC2003 conference.

  • Earthquake Damage Scenario in Visp (Switzerland) : From Active Fault to Building Damage
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 15th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering 2012 (15WCEE). - : ETH Zürich.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a damage scenario based on multidisciplinary study which covers the key elements of the earthquakerisk chain in Visp. Full dynamic rupture simulations are performed using heterogeneous initial distributions, statistically compatible to the database of kinematic inversion results of past earthquakes. The fault is embeddedin the 3D velocity model of the area, which is based on an extensive ambient noise measurement campaign. Inorder to assess the risk in the city of Visp, the buildings were classified based on the screening survey of thebuilding stock. The seismic behavior of each class is described by the mean of fragility curves, partly developedby analytical, numerical and experimental investigations and partly based on existing methods

  • The MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrometer calibration pipeline
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. - 9781510601994 ; 9910, s. 99102W-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) is the only mid-IR Integral Field Spectrometer on board James Webb Space Telescope. The complexity of the MRS requires a very specialized pipeline, with some specific steps not present in other pipelines of JWST instruments, such as fringe corrections and wavelength offsets, with different algorithms for point source or extended source data. The MRS pipeline has also two different variants: the baseline pipeline, optimized for most foreseen science cases, and the optimal pipeline, where extra steps will be needed for specific science cases. This paper provides a comprehensive description of the MRS Calibration Pipeline from uncalibrated slope images to final scientific products, with brief descriptions of its algorithms, input and output data, and the accessory data and calibration data products necessary to run the pipeline.

  • Scheduling Strategies for Mapping Application Workflows onto the Grid
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: 14th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing, Proceedings. - : IEEE. - 0780390377 ; , s. 125-134
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we describe new strategies for scheduling and executing workflow applications on grid resources using the GrADS [Ken Kennedy et al., 2002] infrastructure. Workflow scheduling is based on heuristic scheduling strategies that use application component performance models. The workflow is executed using a novel strategy to bind and launch the application onto heterogeneous resources. We apply these strategies in the context of executing EMAN, a bio-imaging workflow application, on the grid. The results of our experiments show that our strategy of performance model based, in-advance heuristic workflow scheduling results in 1.5 to 2.2 times better makespan than other existing scheduling strategies. This strategy also achieves optimal load balance across the different grid sites for this application.
