  • Endoscopic assessment and grading of Barrett's esophagus using magnification endoscopy and narrow band imaging: Impact of structured learning and experience on the accuracy of the Amsterdam classification system
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-7708 .- 0036-5521. ; 48:2, s. 160-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. Several classification systems have been launched to characterize Barrett's esophagus (BE) mucosa using magnification endoscopy with narrow band imaging (ME-NBI). The good accuracy and interobserver agreement described in the early reports were not reproduced subsequently. Recently, we reported somewhat higher accuracy of the classification developed by the Amsterdam group. The critical question then formulated was whether a structured learning program and the level of experience would affect the clinical usefulness of this classification. Material & methods: Two hundred and nine videos were prospectively captured from patients with BE using ME-NBI. From these, 70 were randomly selected and evaluated by six endoscopists with different levels of expertise, using a dedicated software application. First, an educational set was studied. Thereafter, the 70 test videos were evaluated. After classification of each video, the respective histological feedback was automatically given. Results. Within the learning process, there was a decrease in the time needed for evaluation and an increase in the certainty of prediction. The accuracy did not increase with the learning process. The sensitivity for detection of intestinal metaplasia ranged between 39% and 57%, and for neoplasia between 62% and 90%, irrespective of assessor's expertise. The kappa coefficient for the interobserver agreement ranged from 0.25 to 0.30 for intestinal metaplasia, and from 0.39 to 0.48 for neoplasia. Conclusion: Using a dedicated learning program, the ME-NBI Amsterdam classification system is suboptimal in terms of accuracy and inter- and intraobserver agreements. These results reiterate the questionable utility of corresponding classification system in clinical routine practice.

  • Pressure dependent luminescence in titanium dioxide particles modified with europium ions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Sensors and actuators. B, Chemical. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-4005 .- 1873-3077. ; 234, s. 137-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Particles of titanium dioxide were prepared in the presence of europium ions (TiO2:Eu) by a solvothermal method and thermal annealed in air at 500 °C. The spectroscopic properties of TiO2:Eu particles were analyzed indicating that the Eu3+ ions are likely distributed at the surface or near the surface of the titanium dioxide particles. The photoluminescence analysis showed that the intraionic emission was strongly sensitive to reduced pressure conditions, as seen by its absence under vacuum conditions. The ion emission was re-established as soon as the atmosphere was restored. Additionally, the ion integrated emission intensity follows a linearly dependence with pressure in the range of 150 to 800 mbar revealing a high sensitivity to small variations in pressure, which is an unprecedented result. This innovation will allow the study of new technologies in the area of low vacuum sensors where TiO2:Eu may act as the active element of an optical sensor for a pressure device.

  • Profiling Persistent Asthma Phenotypes in Adolescents : A Longitudinal Diagnostic Evaluation from the INSPIRERS Studies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 18:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We aimed to identify persistent asthma phenotypes among adolescents and to evaluate longitudinally asthma-related outcomes across phenotypes. Adolescents (13-17 years) from the prospective, observational, and multicenter INSPIRERS studies, conducted in Portugal and Spain, were included (n = 162). Latent class analysis was applied to demographic, environmental, and clinical variables, collected at a baseline medical visit. Longitudinal differences in clinical variables were assessed at a 4-month follow-up telephone contact (n = 128). Three classes/phenotypes of persistent asthma were identified. Adolescents in class 1 (n = 87) were highly symptomatic at baseline and presented the highest number of unscheduled healthcare visits per month and exacerbations per month, both at baseline and follow-up. Class 2 (n = 32) was characterized by female predominance, more frequent obesity, and uncontrolled upper/lower airways symptoms at baseline. At follow-up, there was a significant increase in the proportion of controlled lower airway symptoms (p < 0.001). Class 3 (n = 43) included mostly males with controlled lower airways symptoms; at follow-up, while keeping symptom control, there was a significant increase in exacerbations/month (p = 0.015). We have identified distinct phenotypes of persistent asthma in adolescents with different patterns in longitudinal asthma-related outcomes, supporting the importance of profiling asthma phenotypes in predicting disease outcomes that might inform targeted interventions and reduce future risk.

  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.522.7) and 16.5 cm (13.319.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • Dynamic Dual-Reinforcement-Learning Routing Strategies for Quality of Experience-aware Wireless Mesh Networking
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 88:269
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of transmission impairments such as loss and latency on user perceived quality(QoE) depends on the service type. In a real network, multiple service types such as audio, video, and data coexist. This makes resource management inherently complex and difficultto orchestrate. In this paper, we propose an autonomous Quality of Experience managementapproach for multiservice wireless mesh networks, where individual mesh nodes apply rein-forcement learning methods to dynamically adjust their routing strategies in order to maxi-mize the user perceived QoE for each flow. Within the forwarding nodes, we develop a novelpacket dropping strategy that takes into account the impact on QoE. Finally, a novel sourcerate adaptation mechanism is designed that takes into account the expected QoE in order tomatch the sending rate with the available network capacity. An evaluation of our mechanismsusing simulations demonstrates that our approach is superior to the standard approaches,AODV and OLSR, and effectively balances the user perceived QoE between the service flows.

  • Espaços (Des)Habitados | (Un)Inhabited Spaces
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This theme was defined in the winter of 2019, when no one predicted the pandemic crisis caused by COVID-19, which brought other dimensions and relevance to questions of inhabiting and uninhabiting spaces. At the time, there were other issues whose analysis seemed to be urgent: (1) gentrification and touristization of historical and environmentally protected sites; (2) occupation movements of uninhabited spaces; (3) territorial uprooting or intermittent rootedness, both resulting from mass human and cultural mobility, sometimes fostered by technological development and the globalization of the economy, sometimes determined by war, misery and hunger; (4) new (?) forms of ruralization or de-ruralization of regions with accentuated histories of population desertification. These processes are driven by the seduction of the economic and socio-cultural dynamism of cities, as well as by the search for alternative and more environmentally sustainable ways of re-inhabiting territories; (5)climate change, catastrophes, and processes of resettlement and regeneration; (6) and, among others, the inhabitation of space by art and art as an inhabited space. We therefore invited critical, theoretical-conceptual and artistic reflections on these topics, both in the current context of the Covid19 pandemic as in other contexts and approaches for the number5 of T RANSLOCAL-ContemporaryLocalandUrbanCultures.
