  • In vitro characterization and osteoblast responses to nanostructured photocatalytic TiO2 coated surfaces.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acta Biomaterialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-7568 .- 1742-7061. ; 8:6, s. 2411-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims of the study were to characterize a nanostructured photoactive titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) coating and to compare the cellular response of human osteoblasts before and after ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of the coating. A specific nanostructured TiO(2) powder (Degussa P-25), which consists of approximately 80% anatase and 20% rutile, was spin-coated onto commercially pure titanium discs, and was heat-treated thereafter. After topographical, chemical and photocatalytic property characterizations, human osteoblasts were cultured on the coated discs before and after UV irradiation. Cell morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and cell viability was analysed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. From the contact angle analysis, the wettability significantly improved after UV irradiation. The cultured cells were flattened with numerous elongated lammellipodia; however, no morphological differences were indicated between -UV and +UV surfaces. The MTT assay analysis showed that -UV surface presented significantly higher viability compared to the +UV surface except for one cell population group at 3h where there were no differences. The nanostructured photoactive TiO(2) surface improved its hydrophilicity by UV irradiation, however no enhancing effect in cell response was confirmed at the time tested compared to the non-irradiated surface.

  • Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Peptide in the High-Normal Range Is Associated With Increased Carotid Intima-Media Thickness
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Care. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0149-5992 .- 1935-5548. ; 44:1, s. 224-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE While existing evidence supports beneficial cardiovascular effects of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), emerging studies suggest that glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and/or signaling via the GIP receptor may have untoward cardiovascular effects. Indeed, recent studies show that fasting physiological GIP levels are associated with total mortality and cardiovascular mortality, and it was suggested that GIP plays a role in pathogenesis of coronary artery disease. We investigated the associations between fasting and postchallenge GIP and GLP-1 concentrations and subclinical atherosclerosis as measured by mean intima-media thickness in the common carotid artery (IMTmeanCCA) and maximal intima-media thickness in the carotid bifurcation (IMTmaxBulb).RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Participants at reexamination within the Malmö Diet and Cancer–Cardiovascular Cohort study (n = 3,734, mean age 72.5 years, 59.3% women, 10.8% subjects with diabetes, fasting GIP available for 3,342 subjects, fasting GLP-1 available for 3,299 subjects) underwent oral glucose tolerance testing and carotid ultrasound.RESULTS In linear regression analyses, each 1-SD increment of fasting GIP was associated with increased (per mm) IMTmeanCCA (β = 0.010, P = 0.010) and IMTmaxBulb (β = 0.014; P = 0.040) in models adjusted for known risk factors and glucose metabolism. In contrast, each 1-SD increment of fasting GLP-1 was associated with decreased IMTmaxBulb (per mm, β = −0.016, P = 0.014). These associations remained significant when subjects with diabetes were excluded from analyses.CONCLUSIONS In a Swedish elderly population, physiologically elevated levels of fasting GIP are associated with increased IMTmeanCCA, while GLP-1 is associated with decreased IMTmaxBulb, further emphasizing diverging cardiovascular effects of these two incretin hormones.

  • The Infinite Learning Chain. Flipped Professional Labs for Learning and Knowledge Co-Creation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Open Education Studies. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 2544-7831. ; 1, s. 151-176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nowadays universities and other classical research institutions are changing their role in knowledge creation. In general terms we can characterize this transition as the path from "Closed Science"to "Open Science"as a part of a deeper and structural phenomenon known as "knowledge democratization", where different stakeholders as students, makers and other tech and science enthusiasts are able to create knowledge learning from the researchers and cooperating with them. In this process, science engagement of these new actors is a key point to stimulate their creativity, get some important research skills learnt directly from the researchers and be able to apply these skills teaching others in a continuous "learning chain". In this article, we introduce some main features and preliminary results of an experiment called "The infinite learning chain"done in cooperation with Arduino, focused on sensing science and based in a real research project of Group of Atmospheric Science (GAS) called Luleå Environmental Monitoring Stations (LEMS). We debate some interesting questions related to the impact of the format in terms of science engagement, STEM skills acquisition and cooperative learning involvement. We used as "learning ecosystem"a professional Lab, the INSPIRE Lab a complete multidisciplinary facility for space and environmental research and exploration.

  • The Seventeenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys : Complete Release of MaNGA, MaStar, and APOGEE-2 Data
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0067-0049 .- 1538-4365. ; 259:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.
