  • FSF : A real-time scheduling architecture framework
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: 12th IEEE Real-Time and Embedded Technology and Applications Symposium (RTAS'06). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9780769525167 - 0769525164 ; , s. 113-124
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scheduling theory generally assumes that real-time systems are mostly composed of activities with hard real-time requirements. Many systems are built today by composing different applications or components in the same system, leading to a mixture of many different kinds of requirements with small parts of the system having hard real-time requirements and other larger parts with requirements for more flexible scheduling and for quality of service. Hard real-time scheduling techniques are extremely pessimistic for the latter part of the application, and consequently it is necessary to use techniques that let the system resources be fully utilized to achieve the highest possible quality. This paper presents a framework for a scheduling architecture that provides the ability to compose several applications or components into the system, and to flexibly schedule the available resources while guaranteeing hard real-time requirements. The framework (called FSF) is independent of the underlying implementation, and can run on different underlying scheduling strategies. It is based on establishing service contracts that represent the complex and flexible requirements of the applications, and which are managed by the underlying system to provide the required level of service.

  • Intensity normalization of sidescan sonar imagery
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 6th International Conference on Image Processing Theory, Tools and Applications, IPTA 2016. - 9781467389105
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sonar imaging is currently the exemplary choice used in underwater imaging. However, since sound signals are absorbed by water, an image acquired by a sonar will have gradient illumination; thus, underwater maps will be difficult to process. In this work, we investigated this phenomenon with the objective to propose methods to normalize the images with regard to illumination. We propose to use MIxed exponential Regression Analysis (MIRA) estimated from each image that requires normalization. Two sidescan sonars have been used to capture the seabed in Lake Vattern in Sweden in two opposite directions west-east and east-west; hence, the task is extremely difficult due to differences in the acoustic shadows. Using the structural similarity index, we performed similarity analyses between corresponding regions extracted from the sonar images. Results showed that MIRA has superior normalization performance. This work has been carried out as part of the SWARMs project (http://www.swarms.eu/).

  • The AFarCloud ECSEL Project
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design, DSD 2019. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728128610 ; , s. 414-419
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Farming is facing many economic challenges in terms of productivity and cost-effectiveness. Labor shortage partly due to depopulation of rural areas, especially in Europe, is another challenge. Domain specific problems such as accurate identification and proper quantification of pathogens affecting plant and animal health are key factors for minimizing economical risks, and not risking human health. The ECSEL AFarCloud (Aggregate FARming in the CLOUD) project will provide a distributed platform for autonomous farming that will allow the integration and cooperation of agriculture Cyber Physical Systems in real-time in order to increase efficiency, productivity, animal health, food quality and reduce farm labour costs. This platform will be integrated with farm management software and will support monitoring and decision-making solutions based on big data and real-time data mining techniques.

  • Assessing the potential of collaborative video games to improve education in la mixteca region of mexico
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study presented in this paper shows how collaborative learning games can be used to improve primary education for children aged eight to ten in la Mixteca region of Mexico. We developed a series of three collaborative games to develop mathematics, language and reading skills. Each game uses elements of either Mixtec or Mexican national culture to encourage the children to identify with different sides of their identity. The children were tested before and after playing the games, observed during gaming sessions and interviewed to assess the impact of the games on their learning. Results show that educational videogames can be used to promote learning and team working skills as well as directly achieving learning objectives in mathematics.

  • The role of embodied conversational agents in collaborative face to face computer supported learning games
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies show that face to face collaborative videogames have a great potential to improve the quality of education in the classroom of the future. Educational games can help pupils increase cognitive skills, increase motivation and reduce the time taken to reach learning objectives. Games used in a group environment can enrich the learning experience further still by helping develop group social skills and exploiting social dynamics toward achieving a common learning objective. Despite these advantages the uptake of collaborative games as learning tools in the classroom is still relatively low. While collaborative working has proven advantages they also suffer from an incompatibility with the ingrained individualism of traditional education. Moreover, collaborative working can disadvantage introverted students, suffer from conflicts within a group or allow less motivated students to avoid making a contribution. The work described in this paper investigates the viability of these disadvantages being managed through the intervention and mediation of an intelligent embodied conversational agent with awareness of group activity acting as a virtual tutor. Here we examine how students perform and collaborate using a variety of games to; learn words in a foreign language, solve mathematical equations, and add missing words to a paragraph of text. These respectively aim to develop the students’ memorization, basic reasoning, and creative vocabulary. Our embodied virtual agent is emulated using a wizard-of-oz set up with a human controlling the embodied agent Samuela using a basic scripted interaction strategy. To qualify our results, they are contrasted with those obtained with an unsupervised group and a group supervised by a human tutor.

  • An approach for applying multi-agent technology into wireless sensor networks
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Euro American Conference on Telematics and Information Systems - Proceedings of the 2007 Euro American Conference on Telematics and Information Systems, EATIS 2007. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Press. - 9781595935984 ; , s. Article number a22-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present work describes how the concepts and foundations defined for multi-agent system technology can be applied in to a Wireless SensorNetwork (WSN), specifically it is focused on how multi-agent system technology's mechanisms and implementations could facilitate the development of systems based on WSN. In this respect, an architectural model where the above mentioned concepts, foundations and mechanisms come together is proposed, in order to define applications and services on WSN. Validation of the proposed architecture is made by means of its use in a perimeter security scenario ("tracking"). It is important to mention, that partial results of this work have been developed in the project PROPSI (Perimeter Protection by means of Wireless Sensor Networks).

  • Valorization of Marine Waste : Use of Industrial By-Products and Beach Wrack Towards the Production of High Added-Value Products
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Marine Science. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-7745. ; 8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biomass is defined as organic matter from living organisms represented in all kingdoms. It is recognized to be an excellent source of proteins, polysaccharides and lipids and, as such, embodies a tailored feedstock for new products and processes to apply in green industries. The industrial processes focused on the valorization of terrestrial biomass are well established, but marine sources still represent an untapped resource. Oceans and seas occupy over 70% of the Earth's surface and are used intensively in worldwide economies through the fishery industry, as logistical routes, for mining ores and exploitation of fossil fuels, among others. All these activities produce waste. The other source of unused biomass derives from the beach wrack or washed-ashore organic material, especially in highly eutrophicated marine ecosystems. The development of high-added-value products from these side streams has been given priority in recent years due to the detection of a broad range of biopolymers, multiple nutrients and functional compounds that could find applications for human consumption or use in livestock/pet food, pharmaceutical and other industries. This review comprises a broad thematic approach in marine waste valorization, addressing the main achievements in marine biotechnology for advancing the circular economy, ranging from bioremediation applications for pollution treatment to energy and valorization for biomedical applications. It also includes a broad overview of the valorization of side streams in three selected case study areas: Norway, Scotland, and the Baltic Sea.
