    • The "common sense" intervention by toxicology journal editors regarding proposed European Union endocrine disrupter regulations ignores scientific evidence and well-established principles of chemical risk assessment. In this commentary, endocrine disrupter experts express their concerns about a recently published, and is in our considered opinion inaccurate and factually incorrect, editorial that has appeared in several journals in toxicology. Some of the shortcomings of the editorial are discussed in detail. We call for a better founded scientific debate which may help to overcome a polarisation of views detrimental to reaching a consensus about scientific foundations for endocrine disrupter regulation in the EU.

    • The COmetary Secondary Ion Mass Analyser instrument on board ESA's Rosetta mission has collected dust particles in the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. During the early-orbit phase of the Rosetta mission, particles and particle agglomerates have been imaged and analyzed in the inner coma at distances between 100 km and 10 km off the cometary nucleus and at more than 3 AU from the Sun. We identified 585 particles of more than 14 μm in size. The particles are collected at low impact speeds and constitute a sample of the dust particles in the inner coma impacting and fragmenting on the targets. The sizes of the particles range from 14 μm up to sub-millimeter sizes and the differential dust flux size distribution is fitted with a power law exponent of -3.1. After impact, the larger particles tend to stick together, spread out or consist of single or a group of clumps, and the flocculent morphology of the fragmented particles is revealed. The elemental composition of the dust particles is heterogeneous and the particles could contain typical silicates like olivine and pyroxenes, as well as iron sulfides. The sodium to iron elemental ratio is enriched with regard to abundances in CI carbonaceous chondrites by a factor from ∼1.5 to ∼15. No clear evidence for organic matter has been identified. The composition and morphology of the collected dust particles appear to be similar to that of interplanetary dust particles.

    • Movement-based interaction design is increasingly popular, with application domains ranging from dance, sport, gaming to physical rehabilitation. In a workshop at CHI 2016, a set of prominent artists, game design-ers, and interaction designers embarked on a research journey to explore what we came to refer to as "aesthetics in soma-based design". In this follow-up work-shop, we would like to take the next step, shifting from discussing the philosophical underpinnings we draw upon to explain and substantiate our practice, to form our own interaction design theory and conceptualisations. We propose that soma-based design theory needs practical, pragmatic as well as analytical study -- otherwise the felt dimension will be missing. We will consider how such tacit knowledge can be articulated, documented and shared. To ground the discussion firmly in the felt experience of our own practice, the work-shop is organised as a joint practical design work session, supported by analytical study.

  • Derivatizing of Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oil and Coprocessing in Fixed Bed Hydrotreater

    • In several countries forest-based biofuels are being developed and to some extent also deployed. Fast pyrolysis bio-oil produced from, for example, sawdust, has now been coprocessed in fluid catalytic cracking refinery units in a number of commercial trials. However, this application is limited to about 10% of the total feed, and coprocessing in conventional fixed bed hydrotreaters is necessary to reach the high potential with this feedstock. Feeding and upgrading of fast pyrolysis bio-oil in a fixed bed reactor configuration is still problematic due to the inherent bio-oil properties. Stabilization of reactive compounds in fast pyrolysis bio-oil and mild hydrotreatment in a separate refining unit prior to refinery integration has therefore been developed the past decade. Another approach, presented here, involves complete dewatering of fast pyrolysis bio-oil by azeotropic distillation using mesityl oxide as the solvent, followed by conversion of the abundant hydroxyl compounds via mixed anhydride esterification methodology using an external source of mixed carboxylic acids of different chain lengths originating from renewable tall oil fatty acids, providing a lipophilic feed component. Dewatering and derivatizing were carried out in reactors up to 50 dm3 with a mass ratio of fast pyrolysis bio-oil to tall oil fatty acid of 10:13. The produced lipophilic oils were miscible with a petroleum light gas oil fraction and exhibited superior stability even after accelerated aging at elevated temperature (80 °C). The derivatized oils were thus mixed with light gas oil, with a proportion of 30 wt % derivatized oil in final blends and hydrotreated continuously in pilot fixed bed reactors for 14 days at 4 operating conditions without plugging or excessive exotherms. The test conditions were varied; the reactor pressure was either 55 or 80 bar, temperature 380 or 400 °C, and liquid hourly space velocity either 1 or 2 h-1 during the hydrotreatment. Successful hydrodeoxygenation and desulfurization were accomplished, whereas an increasing nitrogen concentration could be observed in the liquid products with the particular catalyst and reaction conditions employed. The observed hydrogen consumption (15-20 g/kg feed) was compared with the stoichiometric consumption for direct deoxygenation and with typical consumptions for industrial hydrotreated vegetable oil processing. The measured biogenic carbon content in hydrotreated liquid products (26.7%) agreed extremely well with the calculated biogenic carbon content in the hydrotreating feed (26.6%) that consisted of the blend of derivatized oil and petroleum light gas oil. The overall results are very promising since simple unit operations can be used to produce derivatized fast pyrolysis bio-oils that do not need additional standalone hydrotreating units but can be coprocessed in existing ones

    • In this paper we discuss the design process and results from a design exploration on the use of thermal stimuli in body awareness exercises. A user-study was performed on an interactive prototype in the form of an interactive heat mat. The paper brings forth an alternative understanding of heat as a design material that extends the common understanding of thermal stimuli in HCI as a communication modality to instead bring the aesthetic and experiential properties to the fore. Findings account for felt body experiences of thermal stimuli and a number of design qualities related to heat as a design material are formulated, pointing to experiential qualities concerning the felt body, subjectivity and subtleness as well as material qualities concerning materiality, inertia and heat transfer.

    • The VEDLIoT project targets the development of energy-efficient Deep Learning for distributed AIoT applications. A holistic approach is used to optimize algorithms while also dealing with safety and security challenges. The approach is based on a modular and scalable cognitive IoT hardware platform. Using modular microserver technology enables the user to configure the hardware to satisfy a wide range of applications. VEDLIoT offers a complete design flow for Next-Generation IoT devices required for collaboratively solving complex Deep Learning applications across distributed systems. The methods are tested on various use-cases ranging from Smart Home to Automotive and Industrial IoT appliances. VEDLIoT is an H2020 EU project which started in November 2020. It is currently in an intermediate stage with the first results available.

    • The addition of gelling polysaccharides to sport-drinks may provide improved tolerability of drinks with high concentration of digestible carbohydrates (CHO), otherwise known to increase the risk of gastro-intestinal complaints among athletes under prolonged exercise. The physico-chemical properties of a drink containing 14 wt% of digestible CHO (0.7:1 fructose and maltodextrin-ratio), 0.2 wt% of HM-pectin/alginate and 0.06 wt%. sodium chloride were examined under in vitro gastric conditions using rheology and large deformation testing. The in vivo gelling behaviour of the drink was studied using magnetic resonance imaging of subjects at rest together with blood glucose measurements. The in vivo results confirm gelation of the test drink, with no gel remaining in the stomach at 60 min and blood glucose values were similar to control. The physico-chemical characterisation of the acidified test drink confirms the formation of a weak gel through which low Mw CHO can diffuse.
