  • Investing in Localized Relationships with Universities: What are the Benefits for RD Subsidiaries of Multinational Enterprises?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industry and Innovation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1366-2716 .- 1469-8390. ; 16:1, s. 59-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In spite of a long-standing interest in the distribution of knowledge spillovers from university research, there is only limited theoretical understanding of if and when opportunities to interact with a research university constitute a significant force of attraction for globally mobile investment in RD. Based on an empirical investigation of the benefits of interaction with universities, this paper proposes an analytical framework and four ideal types of strategy for localised collaboration between RD subsidiaries and universities. This taxonomy, which largely transcends industry sectors, and the illustrative cases presented in this paper provide insights into the potential scope for localised university-industry interaction from the perspective of multinational enterprises. By connecting the empirical results to the question whether these benefits are significant enough to enhance a region's attractiveness as a location for RD, we are able to develop a better understanding of the alternative strategies for policymakers and university leaders interested in stimulating such linkages.

  • The evolving domain of entrepreneurship research
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 41:4, s. 913-930
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on entrepreneurship has flourished in recent years and is evolving rapidly. This article explores the history of entrepreneurship research, how the research domain has evolved, and its current status as an academic field. The need to concretize these issues stems partly from a general interest in defining the current research domain and partly from the more specific tasks confronting the prize committee of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research. Entrepreneurship has developed in many sub-fields within several disciplines-primarily economics, management/business administration, sociology, psychology, economic and cultural anthropology, business history, strategy, marketing, finance, and geography-representing a variety of research traditions, perspectives, and methods. We present an analytical framework that organizes our thinking about the domain of entrepreneurship research by specifying elements, levels of analysis, and the process/context. An overview is provided of where the field stands today and how it is positioned relative to the existing disciplines and new research fields upon which it draws. Areas needed for future progress are highlighted, particularly the need for a rigorous dynamic theory of entrepreneurship that relates entrepreneurial activity to economic growth and human welfare. Moreover, applied work based on more careful design as well as on theoretical models yielding more credible and robust estimates seems also highly warranted.

  • Knowledge-Intensive Entrepreneurship and S3: Conceptualizing Strategies for Sustainability
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 22nd Uddevalla Symposium 2019 Conference, L'Aquila Italy, June 27-29.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim with this paper is to enrich the theory and practice of smart specialization strategies (S3) by integrating the conceptualization of knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship (KIE) to the discourse on S3, and illustrating how this integration can be beneficial to fulfillment or furthering of specific sustainable development goals. For this purpose, we derive a conceptual model based on previous research on governance routines involving knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship by linking to previous research on KIE, as well as through an illustrative case example using the Swedish maritime cluster. We end by proposing three different strategic roles for the KIE firm to enhance S3 and sustainability-related outcomes.

  • The evolution of knowledge-intensive innovation ecosystems : co-evolving entrepreneurial activity and innovation policy in the West Swedish maritime system
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Industry and Innovation. - Abingdon : Informa UK Limited. - 1366-2716 .- 1469-8390. ; 28:5, s. 651-676
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper contributes insights into the debate concerning the emergence of innovation ecosystems. More specifically, we propose a knowledge-intensive innovation ecosystem. Building on prior research on collective action, innovation governance, and knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship, we elaborate on existing theory by presenting a conceptual framework to articulate why ecosystems require the combination of top-down exploration of policy alternatives by policymakers, together with bottom-up knowledge-intensive entrepreneurial activity in order to progress towards sustainable development. Through our case study of the Maritime Cluster of West Sweden, we propose that sustained incentives for knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurship, along with more experimentation and new forms of collaboration by policymakers in the Maritime Cluster, are needed in order for progress towards innovation-led sustainable development to occur. © 2020 The Author(s). • Building a sectoral innovation system for new energy vehicles in Hangzhou, China: Insights from evolutionary economics and strategic niche management
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 224, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combining insights from evolutionary economics and strategic niche management, this study investigates the rapid emergence of an innovation system for new energy vehicles (NEV) in Hangzhou, China. Public policy has facilitated the development of strategic priorities and niches for the NEV industry in Hangzhou, demonstrating the role of public policies in advancing the sectoral innovation system. Indeed, the rapid formation of policy stimulates the co-evolution of market and technical niches. More specifically, market niches-such as, in this case, the renting and sharing markets for NEVs in Hangzhou-drive technical niches because market scale provides benefits to manufacturers, who then conduct research and development to improve their technology and reduce production costs. Our case study further recommends that while the key purpose of the underlying policies-to promote the creation and growth of the emerging market-should remain the same, they also need to be adapted over time. This research suggests that the combination of public policy intended to create markets and the coevolution of market and technical niches has enabled the rapid emergence of the innovation system for this nascent technology at an early phase. • Developing innovation governance readiness in regenerative medicine: lessons learned from the Macchiarini crisis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Regenerative Medicine. - London : Future Medicine Ltd. - 1746-0751 .- 1746-076X. ; 16:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The generation and clinical adoption of workable therapies in regenerative medicine has been slow, despite its alleged potential to relieve suffering and improve health outcomes. This has been explained by a fundamental difference between advanced cell and gene therapies and conventional drug- and device-based therapies, raising questions about how the readiness of existing healthcare systems to adopt such therapies can be evaluated and improved. In this paper, we use the lessons learned from the Macchiarini crisis at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden to take the first step in formulating the concept of innovation governance readiness. We propose it as a tool to help evaluate and improve the ability of private, public and civil society actors to work together to build and put into practice therapies based on emerging medical technologies such as regenerative medicine.

  • Does co-location matter for formal knowledge collaboration in the Swedish biotechnology-pharmaceutical sector?
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Research Policy. - 0048-7333 .- 1873-7625. ; 32:3, s. 483-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the validity of assumptions about the importance of co-locality for innovation, by analyzing whether or not co-location matters for formal knowledge collaboration in the Swedish biotechnology-pharmaceutical sector, or biotech-pharma sector. The population of Swedish biotech-pharma firms has been defined, based on the three criteria of geographical location, their engagement in active knowledge development, and their specialized knowledge/product focus. The firms' patterns of regional, national and international collaboration with other firms and with universities is analyzed, as well as the differing collaborative patterns of small versus large firm. In addressing the theoretical questions about the relative importance of co-location for innovation, the article also provides an empirical overview of the Swedish biotech-pharma sector, especially trends over time. This paper thus contributes to the literature by expanding our empirical knowledge about one European biotech-pharma sectoral system, e.g. Sweden, as well as addressing the theoretical question about the relative importance of co-location for formal knowledge collaboration.
