  • Six transiting planets and a chain of Laplace resonances in TOI-178
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 649
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Determining the architecture of multi-planetary systems is one of the cornerstones of understanding planet formation and evolution. Resonant systems are especially important as the fragility of their orbital configuration ensures that no significant scattering or collisional event has taken place since the earliest formation phase when the parent protoplanetary disc was still present. In this context, TOI-178 has been the subject of particular attention since the first TESS observations hinted at the possible presence of a near 2:3:3 resonant chain. Here we report the results of observations from CHEOPS, ESPRESSO, NGTS, and SPECULOOS with the aim of deciphering the peculiar orbital architecture of the system. We show that TOI-178 harbours at least six planets in the super-Earth to mini-Neptune regimes, with radii ranging from 1.152 to 2.87 Earth radii and periods of 1.91, 3.24, 6.56, 9.96, 15.23, and 20.71 days. All planets but the innermost one form a 2:4:6:9:12 chain of Laplace resonances, and the planetary densities show important variations from planet to planet, jumping from 1.02 to 0.177 times the Earth's density between planets c and d. Using Bayesian interior structure retrieval models, we show that the amount of gas in the planets does not vary in a monotonous way, contrary to what one would expect from simple formation and evolution models and unlike other known systems in a chain of Laplace resonances. The brightness of TOI-178 (H = 8.76 mag, J = 9.37 mag, V = 11.95 mag) allows for a precise characterisation of its orbital architecture as well as of the physical nature of the six presently known transiting planets it harbours. The peculiar orbital configuration and the diversity in average density among the planets in the system will enable the study of interior planetary structures and atmospheric evolution, providing important clues on the formation of super-Earths and mini-Neptunes. -0.070 -0.13 -0.23 -0.061 +0.073 +0.14 +0.28 +0.055

  • Geolocation with respect to persona privacy for the Allergy Diary app - a MASK study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: World Allergy Organization Journal. - : BMC. - 1939-4551. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Collecting data on the localization of users is a key issue for the MASK (Mobile Airways Sentinel network: the Allergy Diary) App. Data anonymization is a method of sanitization for privacy. The European Commission's Article 29 Working Party stated that geolocation information is personal data. To assess geolocation using the MASK method and to compare two anonymization methods in the MASK database to find an optimal privacy method. Methods: Geolocation was studied for all people who used the Allergy Diary App from December 2015 to November 2017 and who reported medical outcomes. Two different anonymization methods have been evaluated: Noise addition (randomization) and k-anonymity (generalization). Results: Ninety-three thousand one hundred and sixteen days of VAS were collected from 8535 users and 54,500 (58. 5%) were geolocalized, corresponding to 5428 users. Noise addition was found to be less accurate than k-anonymity using MASK data to protect the users' life privacy. Discussion: k-anonymity is an acceptable method for the anonymization of MASK data and results can be used for other databases.

  • CHEOPS in-flight performance: A comprehensive look at the first 3.5 yr of operations
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 687
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. Since the discovery of the first exoplanet almost three decades ago, the number of known exoplanets has increased dramatically. By beginning of the 2000s it was clear that dedicated facilities to advance our studies in this field were needed. The CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) is a space telescope specifically designed to monitor transiting exoplanets orbiting bright stars. In September 2023, CHEOPS completed its nominal mission duration of 3.5 yr and remains in excellent operational conditions. As a testament to this, the mission has been extended until the end of 2026. Aims. Scientific and instrumental data have been collected throughout in-orbit commissioning and nominal operations, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the missiona's performance. In this article, we present the results of this analysis with a twofold goal. First, we aim to inform the scientific community about the present status of the mission and what can be expected as the instrument ages. Secondly, we intend for this publication to serve as a legacy document for future missions, providing insights and lessons learned from the successful operation of CHEOPS. Methods. To evaluate the instrument performance in flight, we developed a comprehensive monitoring and characterisation (M&C) programme. It consists of dedicated observations that allow us to characterise the instrumenta's response and continuously monitor its behaviour. In addition to the standard collection of nominal science and housekeeping data, these observations provide valuable input for detecting, modelling, and correcting instrument systematics, discovering and addressing anomalies, and comparing the instrumenta's actual performance with expectations. Results. The precision of the CHEOPS measurements has enabled the mission objectives to be met and exceeded. The satellitea's performance remains stable and reliable, ensuring accurate data collection throughout its operational life. Careful modelling of the instrumental systematics allows the data quality to be significantly improved during the light curve analysis phase, resulting in more precise scientific measurements. Conclusions. CHEOPS is compliant with the driving scientific requirements of the mission. Although visible, the ageing of the instrument has not affected the missiona's performance. The satellitea's capabilities remain robust, and we are confident that we will continue to acquire high-quality data during the mission extension.

  • Towards architecture-wide analysis, verification, and validation for total system stability during goal-seeking space robotics operations
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: AIAA Space and Astronautics Forum and Exposition, SPACE 2016. - Reston, Virginia : American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we discuss the beginnings of an attempt to define and analyze the stability of an entire modular robotic system architecture - one which includes a three-tier (3T) layer breakdown of capabilities, with symbolic, deterministic planning at the highest level. We approach the problem from the standpoint of a control theory outlook, and try to formalize the issues that result from trying to quantitatively characterize the overall performance of a well-defined system without a need for exhaustive testing. We start by discussing the concept of bounded-input bounded-output stability, giving examples where the technique might not be sufficient to guarantee what we term “total system stability” due to complications associated with the levels of abstraction between the modules and components that are being chained together in the architecture. We then go on to discuss necessary conditions that may fall out of this naturally as a result. We further try to better-define the input and output constraints needed to guarantee total system stability, using an assumption-guarantee-like contractual framework that sits alongside the architecture; the requirements then may have influence across multiple modules, in order to keep consistency. We also discuss how the structure of the architectural modules may help or hinder the process of capability characterization and performance analysis of each module and a given architecture configuration as a whole. We then discuss two overlapping methods that, combined, should allow us to analyze the effectiveness of the architecture, and help towards verification and validation of both the components and the system as a whole. Demonstrative examples are given using a specific architectural implementation called the Resilient Spacecraft Executive. In future work, we hope to define both necessary and sufficient conditions for total system stability across such a system architecture for robotics use.

  • Faint objects in motion: the new frontier of high precision astrometry
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Experimental Astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 51:3, s. 845-886
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sky survey telescopes and powerful targeted telescopes play complementary roles in astronomy. In order to investigate the nature and characteristics of the motions of very faint objects, a flexibly-pointed instrument capable of high astrometric accuracy is an ideal complement to current astrometric surveys and a unique tool for precision astrophysics. Such a space-based mission will push the frontier of precision astrometry from evidence of Earth-mass habitable worlds around the nearest stars, to distant Milky Way objects, and out to the Local Group of galaxies. As we enter the era of the James Webb Space Telescope and the new ground-based, adaptive-optics-enabled giant telescopes, by obtaining these high precision measurements on key objects that Gaia could not reach, a mission that focuses on high precision astrometry science can consolidate our theoretical understanding of the local Universe, enable extrapolation of physical processes to remote redshifts, and derive a much more consistent picture of cosmological evolution and the likely fate of our cosmos. Already several missions have been proposed to address the science case of faint objects in motion using high precision astrometry missions: NEAT proposed for the ESA M3 opportunity, micro-NEAT for the S1 opportunity, and Theia for the M4 and M5 opportunities. Additional new mission configurations adapted with technological innovations could be envisioned to pursue accurate measurements of these extremely small motions. The goal of this White Paper is to address the fundamental science questions that are at stake when we focus on the motions of faint sky objects and to briefly review instrumentation and mission profiles.

  • An aircraft electric power testbed for validating automatically synthesized reactive control protocols
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: HSCC - Proc. Int. Conf. Hybrid Syst.: Comput. Control, Part CPSWeek. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450315678 ; , s. 89-94
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern aircraft increasingly rely on electric power for subsystems that have traditionally run on mechanical power. The complexity and safety-criticality of aircraft electric power systems have therefore increased, rendering the design of these systems more challenging. This work is motivated by the potential that correct-by-construction reactive controller synthesis tools may have in increasing the effectiveness of the electric power system design cycle. In particular, we have built an experimental hardware platform that captures some key elements of aircraft electric power systems within a simplified setting. We intend to use this platform for validating the applicability of theoretical advances in correct-by-construction control synthesis and for studying implementation-related challenges. We demonstrate a simple design workflow from formal specifications to autogenerated code that can run on software models and be used in hardware implementation. We show some preliminary results with different control architectures on the developed hardware testbed.

  • Serum Alkylresorcinols as Biomarkers of Dietary Gluten Exposure in Celiac disease
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: FASEB Journal. - 1530-6860 .- 0892-6638. ; 31:1, s. abstr. 315.4--
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Therapy for celiac disease (CD) mainly relies on following a gluten-free diet (GFD); however, a serum marker for gluten intake has yet to be established. Aims To evaluate the utility of alkylresorcinol concentrations for detecting gluten intake in studies of human and mouse. Methods Alkylresorcinol concentrations were compared among treated CD patients (n=34), untreated CD patients (n=36), and controls (n=33). Furthermore, 7 additional CD patients whose serum samples were available at diagnosis and after GFD were evaluated. In mice studies, alkylresorcinol concentrations were compared in the serum of 5 mice fed a regular chow and 10 mice fed lifelong with a gluten-free chow. In addition, the effect of adding gluten on changes of alkylresorcinol concentrations was also evaluated. Results Total alkylresorcinol concentrations were significantly lower in treated CD patients (median [IQR], 3 (2–8) nmol/L), compared to untreated CD patients (median [IQR], 32 [11–74] nmol/L; P<.0001) or healthy controls (median [IQR], 54 [23–112] nmol/L; P<.0001). Moreover, alkylresorcinol concentrations in CD patients significantly decreased after introduction of a GFD (median, 34 nmol/L at diagnosis vs. 5 nmol.L after GFD, p=0.02). In the mice, median (IQR) total alkylresorcinol concentrations in serum samples of mice fed lifelong with a gluten-free chow was 1.8 (1.6–2.3) nmol/L, which was further significantly increased to 16 (11–22) nmol/L after 8 days of feeding with the gluten free chow that had gluten added to it. (p=.008). Conclusion Serum alkylresorcinol concentrations could be a useful marker for dietary gluten in CD.

  • Synthesis of reactive control protocols for switch electrical power systems for commercial application with safety specifications
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence, SSCI 2016. - : IEEE. - 9781509042401
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a method for the reactive synthesis of fault-tolerant optimal control protocols for a finite deterministic discrete event system subject to safety specifications. A Deterministic Finite State Machine (DFSM) and Behavior Tree (BT) were used to model the system. The synthesis procedure involves formulating the policy problem as a shortest path dynamic programming problem. The procedure evaluates all possible states when applied to the DFSM, or over all possible actions when applied to the BT. The resulting strategy minimizes the number of actions performed to meet operational objectives without violating safety conditions. The effectiveness of the procedure on DFSMs and BTs is demonstrated through three examples of switched electrical power systems for commercial application and analyzed using run-time complexity analysis. The results demonstrated that for large order system BTs provided a tractable model to synthesize an optimal control policy.
