  • International Cooperation for Remote Laboratory Use
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Contributions to Higher Engineering Education. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811089176 ; , s. 1-31
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimenting is fundamental to the training process of all scientists and engineers. While experiments have been traditionally done inside laboratories, the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies added two alternatives accessible anytime, anywhere. These two alternatives are known as virtual and remote laboratories and are sometimes indistinguishably referred as online laboratories. Similarly to other instructional technologies, virtual and remote laboratories require some effort from teachers in integrating them into curricula, taking into consideration several factors that affect their adoption (i.e., cost) and their educational effectiveness (i.e., benefit). This chapter analyzes these two dimensions and sustains the case where only through international cooperation it is possible to serve the large number of teachers and students involved in engineering education. It presents an example in the area of electrical and electronics engineering, based on a remote laboratory named Virtual Instruments System in Reality, and it then describes how a number of European and Latin American institutions have been cooperating under the scope of an Erasmus+ project, for spreading its use in Brazil and Argentina.

  • Use of GNSS Tropospheric Products for Climate Monitoring (Working Group 3)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advanced GNSS Tropospheric Products for Monitoring Severe Weather Events and Climate. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783030139001 ; , s. 267-402
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There has been growing interest in recent years in the use of homogeneously reprocessed ground-based GNSS, VLBI, and DORIS measurements for climate applications. Existing datasets are reviewed and the sensitivity of tropospheric estimates to the processing details is discussed. The uncertainty in the derived IWV estimates and linear trends is around 1 kg m^2 RMS and ± 0.3 kg m^2 per decade, respectively. Standardized methods for ZTD outlier detection and IWV conversion are proposed. The homogeneity of final time series is limited however by changes in the stations equipment and environment. Various homogenization algorithms have been evaluated based on a synthetic benchmark dataset. The uncertainty of trends estimated from the homogenized times series is estimated to ±0.5 kg m^2 per decade. Reprocessed GNSS IWV data are analysed along with satellites data, reanalyses and global and regional climate model simulations. A selection of global and regional reprocessed GNSS datasets and ERA-interim reanalysis are made available through the GOP-TropDB tropospheric database and online service. A new tropo SINEX format, providing new features and simplifications, was developed and it is going to be adopted by all the IAG services.

  • Perspectives on Business Modelling: Introduction
  • 1999
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business Modelling is the use of models and methods to understand and change organisations. The main objective is to bridge the communication gap between business people and systems people. In this chapter, three important themes in business modelling are presented: development on different levels, explorations of different points of view, and descriptions of different aspects. Overviews of the following chapters are given in order to highlight each perspective on business modelling

  • Renewable Energy Technologies
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: World energy assessment: energy and the challenge of sustainability. - 9211261260 ; , s. 219-272
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 1998 renewable energy sources supplied 56 ± 10 exajoules,or about 14 percent of world primary energy consumption. Thesupply was dominated by traditional biomass (38 ± 10 exajoules a year. Other major contributions came from large hydropower (9 exajoules a year) and from modern biomass (7 exajoules). The contribution of all other renewables — small hydropower, geothermal, wind, solar, and marineenergy — was about 2 exajoules. That means that the energy supply from new renewables was about 9 exajoules (about 2 percent of world consumption). The commercial primary energy supply from renewable sources was 27 ± 6 exajoules (nearly 7 percent of world consumption), with 16 ± 6 exajoules from biomass. Renewable energy sources can meet many times the present world energy demand, so their potential is enormous. They can enhance diversity in energy supply markets, secure long-term sustainable energy supplies, and reduce local and global atmospheric emissions. They can also provide commercially attractive options to meet specific needs for energy services (particularly in developing countries and rural areas), create new employment opportunities, and offer possibilities for local manufacturing of equipment. There are many renewable technologies. Although often commerciallyavailable, most are still at an early stage of development and not technically mature. They demand continuing research, development, and demonstration efforts. In addition, few renewable energy technologies can compete with conventional fuels on cost, except in some niche markets. But substantial cost reductions can be achieved for most renewables, closing gaps and making them more competitive. That will require further technology development and market deployment — and boosting production capacities to mass production. For the long term and under very favourable conditions, the lowest cost to produce electricity might be $0.01–0.02 a kilowatt-hour for geothermal, $0.03 a kilowatt-hour for wind and hydro, $0.04 a kilowatt-hour for solar thermal and biomass, and $0.05–0.06 a kilowatt-hour for photovoltaics and marine currents. The lowest cost to produce heat might be $0.005 a kilowatt-hour for geothermal, $0.01 a kilowatt-hour for biomass, and $0.02–0.03 a kilowatt-hour for solar thermal. The lowest cost to produce fuels might be $1.5 a gigajoule for biomass, $6–7 a gigajoule for ethanol, $7–10 a gigajoule for methanol, and $6–8 a gigajoule for hydrogen. Scenarios investigating the potential of renewables reveal that they might contribute 20–50 percent of energy supplies in the second half of the 21st century. A transition to renewables-based energy systems would have to rely on: Successful development and diffusion of renewable energy technologies that become more competitive through cost reductions from technological and organisational developments. Political will to internalise environmental costs and other externalities that permanently increase fossil fuel prices. Many countries have found ways to promote renewables. As renewable energy activities grow and require more funding, the tendency in many countries is to move away from methods that let taxpayers carry the burden of promoting renewables, towards economic and regulatory methods that let energy consumers carry the burden.

  • Assessing the release readiness of engine control software
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: SQUADE '18 Proceedings of the 1st International Workshop on Software Qualities and Their Dependencies. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450357371 ; , s. 5-12
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Powertrain control calibration is an essential stage before the delivery of final products, to ensure that a vehicle works well in all driving environments. However, due to complexity of a powertrain control system (often as many as 40,000 parameters), it is difficult to assess when all parameters are fully calibrated. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore an approach to evaluate and predict the maturity level of powertrain control software based on calibration data for simulation models. We developed metrics that indicate software maturity and their visualization using heatmaps. We used software maturity growth curves to select maturity growth models for maturity assessment. The results and approaches of this paper were validated with theoretical methods and empirical methods using action research techniques. Our conclusions show that we can use standard software reliability growth models to monitor the calibration process for powertrain software, and we conclude that this type of monitoring provides a good support for quality stakeholders in monitoring powertrain calibration quality.

  • Unpacking the Complexity of Science Teachers’ PCK in Action : Enacted and Personal PCK
  • 2019. - 1
  • Ingår i: Repositioning Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Teachers’ Professional Knowledge. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811358982 - 9789811358975 ; , s. 271-286
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on enacted PCK (ePCK), i.e. the specific knowledge and skills that science teachers use in their practice, as it plays out in specific classroom contexts while teaching particular content to their students. In unpacking this aspect of the Refined Consensus Model (RCM) of PCK, we consider both the nature of ePCK and its interactions with other realms of PCK, primarily personal PCK (pPCK). Recognising the complexity of classroom practice—in terms of both the uniqueness of each classroom situation and the necessarily spontaneous nature of classroom interactions—we propose a mechanism through which pPCK is transformed into ePCK, and vice versa, throughout the plan-teach-reflect cycle. We then illustrate these ideas using several empirical examples of efforts to capture and analyse science teachers’ ePCK (and associated pPCK). We conclude with discussion of some of the opportunities, challenges and implications of using the RCM, along with our unpacking of ePCK and its relationship to pPCK, as a means of understanding the knowledge that science teachers utilise in the midst of planning, teaching and reflecting.
