  • Predicting caregiver burden in informal caregivers caring for persons with dementia living at home – A follow-up cohort study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Dementia. - London : Sage Publications. - 1471-3012 .- 1741-2684. ; 9:3, s. 640-660
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Longitudinal studies of caregiver burden when caring for persons with dementia living at home are sparse. The aim of the study was to identify factors associated with caregiver burden and predicting increased burden related to caregivers, persons with dementia and formal care. Data were collected through interviews with 1223 caregivers in eight European countries. Bivariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed. Factors associated with caregiver burden included extensive informal care provision, decreased well-being and reduced quality of life for the caregiver and reduced cognition, decreased quality of life, severe neuropsychiatric symptoms and depression in the person with dementia and caregivers’ negative experience of quality of care. Factors predicting an increased burden were diminished caregiver well-being, severe neuropsychiatric symptoms of the person with dementia and caregivers’ negative perception of quality of care. The knowledge gained in this study may be useful in developing more adequate service systems and interventions to improve dementia care. © 2018, The Author(s) 2018.

  • Psychological well-being over time among informal caregivers caring for persons with dementia living at home
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Innovation in Aging. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 2399-5300. ; 1, s. 1381-1381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated informal caregivers’ psychologi- cal well-being and predicted increase in psychological well- being, when caring for persons with dementia (PwDs) living at home, related to caregiver, PwD and formal care (FC) factors. This was a cohort study, at baseline and follow-up in eight European countries. Caregivers included (n=1,223) were caring for PwDs aged ≥ 65 years living at home, in risk of being institutionalized. Data was collected using standard- ized instruments. Logistic regression analysis of factors asso- ciated with caregiver psychological well-being at baseline and 3 months later was performed. Factors associated with presence of caregiver psychological well-being at baseline were positive experience of caregiving, low caregiver burden, high quality of life (QoL) for caregivers, male gender of PwD, high QoL of PwD and few neuropsychiatric symptoms for the PwD. At follow-up, caregivers with increased psychologi- cal well-being experienced quality of care (QoC) higher and were more often using dementia speci c service. Predicting factors for caregivers’ increased psychological well-being were less caregiver burden, positive experience of caregiv- ing, less supervision of the PwD and higher caregiver QoL, if PwD were male, had higher QoL and less neuropsychiat- ric symptoms. Higher QoC predicted increased caregivers’ psychological well-being. It can be concluded that informal caregiving for PwDs living at home is a complex task. Our study showed that caregivers’ psychological well-being was associated with, among other things, less caregiver burden and higher QoL. Professionals should be aware of PwD neu- ropsychiatric symptoms that might affect caregivers’ psycho- logical well-being, and provide proper care and treatment for caregivers and PwDs.

  • The catabolic capacity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is preserved to a higher extent during carbon compared to nitrogen starvation
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Yeast. - Chichester : Wiley. - 0749-503X .- 1097-0061. ; 18:15, s. 1371-1381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A comparison of catabolic capacity was made between S. cerevisiae cells subjected to 24 h carbon or nitrogen starvation. The cells were shifted to starvation conditions at the onset of respiratory growth on ethanol in aerobic batch cultures, using glucose as the carbon and energy source. The results showed that the catabolic capacity was preserved to a much larger extent during carbon compared to nitrogen starvation. Nitrogen starvation experiments were made in the presence of ethanol (not glucose) to exclude the effect of glucose transport inactivation (Busturia and Lagunas, 1986). Hence, the difference in catabolic capacity could not be attributed to differences in glucose transport capacity during these conditions. In order to understand the reason for this difference in starvation response, measurement of protein composition, adenine nucleotides, inorganic phosphate, poly phosphate and storage carbohydrates were performed. No clear correlation between any of these variables and catabolic capacity after starvation could be obtained. However, there was a positive correlation between total catabolic activity and intracellular ATP concentration when glucose was added to starved cells. The possible mechanism for this correlation, as well as what determines the ATP level, is discussed.

  • Envelope Detector Sensitivity and Blocking Characteristics
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 20th European Conference on Circuit Theory and Design (ECCTD). - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Press. - 9781457706189 - 9781457706172 - 9781457706165 ; , s. 773-776
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents analytical expressions for the sensitivity of a low power envelope detector driven by a weak RF signal in the presence of a blocking signal. The envelope detector has been proposed for low power Wake-Up radios in applications such as RFID and wireless sensor systems. The theoretical results are verified with simulations of a modern short channel MOS transistor in a commonly used circuit topology. A discussion around a tutorial example of a radio frontend, consisting of an LNA and a detector, is presented. It is shown that the sensitivity of a low power envelope detector can reach -62 dBm with a low power LNA and in presence of a CW blocker. © 2011 IEEE.

  • Power Consumption of Integrated Low-Power Receivers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal on Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems. - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE Press. - 2156-3357 .- 2156-3365. ; 4:3, s. 273-283
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) it has become clear that radio-frequency (RF) designers have to be aware of power constraints, e.g., in the design of simplistic ultra-low power receivers often used as wake-up radios (WuRs). The objective of this work, one of the first systematic studies of power bounds for RF-systems, is to provide an overview and intuitive feel for how power consumption and sensitivity relates for low-power receivers. This was done by setting up basic circuit schematics for different radio receiver architectures to find analytical expressions for their output signal-to-noise ratio including power consumption, bandwidth, sensitivity, and carrier frequency. The analytical expressions and optimizations of the circuits give us relations between dc-energy-per-bit and receiver sensitivity, which can be compared to recent published low-power receivers. The parameter set used in the analysis is meant to reflect typical values for an integrated 90 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor fabrication processes, and typical small sized RF lumped components.

  • Ultra Low Power Wake-Up Radio Using Envelope Detector and Transmission Line Voltage Transformer
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal on Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2156-3357 .- 2156-3365. ; 3:1, s. 5-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An ultra-low power wake-up radio receiver using no oscillators is described. The radio utilizes an envelope detector followed by a baseband amplifier and is fabricated in a 130-nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor process. The receiver is preceded by a passive radio-frequency voltage transformer, also providing 50 Omega antenna matching, fabricated as transmission lines on the FR4 chip carrier. A sensitivity of -47 dBm with 200 kb/s on-off keying modulation is measured at a current consumption of 2.3 mu A from a 1 V supply. No trimming is used. The receiver accepts a dBm continuous wave blocking signal, or modulated blockers 6 dB below the sensitivity limit, with no loss of sensitivity.

  • Wrestling with a ghost : facing an opponent I can neither see nor clinch – the experience of professional wrestlers who have suffered an ACL injury
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open Sport and Exercise Medicine. - London : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2055-7647. ; 10:1, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explored professional wrestlers’ experiences of the consequences of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and their perception of whether the ACL injury could have been prevented. We interviewed 10 professional wrestlers (60% women, age range 21–34) treated with ACL reconstruction with semistructured interviews. Transcripts were analysed using qualitative content analysis: One major theme, ‘Wrestling with a ghost: facing an opponent I can neither see nor clinch’, supported by five main categories, emerged from the collected data. The five main categories were: My ACL injury: bad luck or bad planning?; The way back: a fight to return to sport; Only performance counts; The injury’s impact on life: a wrestling with emotions; In hindsight, personal growth. Professional wrestlers who experienced an ACL injury expressed that not only the injury itself but also the subsequent recovery posed major challenges that they did not know how to deal with and that, in some cases, ended the athletes’ wrestling careers. Professional wrestlers attributed their ACL injuries to bad luck or large training loads and wished that they had more support from the wrestling community when injured. © Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2024.
