  • Structural and magnetic properties of multi-core nanoparticles analysed using a generalised numerical inversion method
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322 .- 2045-2322. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structural and magnetic properties of magnetic multi-core particles were determined by numerical inversion of small angle scattering and isothermal magnetisation data. The investigated particles consist of iron oxide nanoparticle cores (9 nm) embedded in poly(styrene) spheres (160 nm). A thorough physical characterisation of the particles included transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation. Their structure was ultimately disclosed by an indirect Fourier transform of static light scattering, small angle X-ray scattering and small angle neutron scattering data of the colloidal dispersion. The extracted pair distance distribution functions clearly indicated that the cores were mostly accumulated in the outer surface layers of the poly(styrene) spheres. To investigate the magnetic properties, the isothermal magnetisation curves of the multicore particles (immobilised and dispersed in water) were analysed. The study stands out by applying the same numerical approach to extract the apparent moment distributions of the particles as for the indirect Fourier transform. It could be shown that the main peak of the apparent moment distributions correlated to the expected intrinsic moment distribution of the cores. Additional peaks were observed which signaled deviations of the isothermal magnetisation behavior from the non-interacting case, indicating weak dipolar interactions.

  • Magnetic properties of epitaxial Ni(001) films and sub-micron particles
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 236, s. 139-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetic properties of Ni particles with well-defined geometry, prepared by electron lithography from epitaxial Ni(001) films of thickness 50 and 60 nm were studied. The particles were circles with diameters 0.6 m and rectangles with sides 0.9 m and 0.3 m, that were positioned in square and rectangular lattices, having lattice constants about twice the particle dimensions. Reference samples and particles with the lattices oriented along the [100] and [110] directions were prepared. Hysteresis curves were obtained for particles and reference samples, in the field range 2T at temperatures between 50 and 300 K. The particles were further imaged by magnetic force microscopy. The coercivities of the particles are about the same as that of the reference samples, being of the order of 10 mT at room temperature and increasing with decreasing temperature. This may be explained by the temperature dependence of the magnetic anisotropy of the Ni film, estimated to K1=-12.5, -12.8 and -87.6 kJ m-3 at 295, 250 and 50 K, respectively. Whereas the hysteresis curves of the particles are governed by the intrinsic properties of the starting film in low fields, the decreased lateral size influences the behaviour in higher fields as demagnetization effects and features characteristic for annihilation and nucleation of domain walls. One of the samples, rectangles with the long axis alone the [110] direction, has a significantly higher remanence and coercivity than the others. The magnetic images show that the demagnetized state of this sample comprises both single-domain and multidomain particles. Corresponding images showed only multidomain particles in all other samples. Thus it was concluded that the actual size (0.9 m0.3 m50 nm) is close to the critical size for single domains in Ni

  • Takras vintrarna 2009/2010 och 2010/2011 : orsaker och förslag till åtgärder
  • 2011
  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During January and March 2010 a large number of roofs collapsed in Sweden due to heavy snowfall. The temperature was below zero and the wind came from the north and the east during the whole period. It was mainly steel and timber structures that failed. SP has created a database with information about 180 collapsed or seriously damaged buildings. The age of the these buildings spans over a 100 year period, but 60 % of them were erected 1980 or later. Most of the roofs were relatively flat. The main causes of the collapses was poor design and errors made during erection. A serious design error was that snow pockets had not been considered. It can be concluded that the snowfall was very heavy, but snow was not the main cause of the failures, but revealed errors and shortcomings. This coincides well with experiences made in earlier investigations on roof collapses.

  • Modelling the effect of different core sizes and magnetic interactions inside magnetic nanoparticles on hyperthermia performance
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 477, s. 198-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present experimental intrinsic loss power (ILP) values, measured at an excitation frequency of 1 MHz and at relatively low field amplitudes of 3.4–9.9 kA/m, as a function of the mean core diameter, for selected magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The mean core sizes ranged from ca. 8 nm to 31 nm. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that those with smaller core sizes (less than ca. 22 nm) were single-core MNPs, while those with larger core sizes (ca. 29 nm to 31 nm) were multi-core MNPs. The ILP data showed a peak at core sizes of ca. 20 nm. We show here that this behaviour correlates well with the predicted ILP values obtained using either a non-interacting Debye model, or via dynamic Monte-Carlo simulations, the latter including core-core magnetic interactions for the multi-core particles. This alignment of the models is a consequence of the low field amplitudes used. We also present interesting results showing that the core-core interactions affect the ILP value differently depending on the mean core size.

  • Poling and characterization of piezoelectric polymer fibers for use in textile sensors
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Sensors and Actuators A-Physical. - : Elsevier S.A.. - 0924-4247 .- 1873-3069. ; 201, s. 477-486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study reports on the poling and characteristics of a melt-spun piezoelectric bicomponent fiber with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as its sheath component and a conductive composite with carbon black (CB) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) as its core component. The influence of poling conditions on the piezoelectric properties of the fibers has been investigated. The poling parameters temperature, time and poling voltage have been varied and the piezoelectric effect of both contact- and corona-poled yarns have been evaluated. The results show that a high piezoelectric effect is achieved when the poling voltage is high as possible and the poling temperature is between 60°C and 120°C. It was also shown that permanent polarization is achieved in a time as short as 2 second in corona-poled fibers. A yarn exposed to a sinusoidal axial tension of 0.07% strain (the corresponding force amplitude was 0.05 N) shows an intrinsic voltage output of 4 V. The mean power from a 25 mm length of yarn is estimated to be 15nW. To demonstrate the fibers sensor properties, they are woven into a textile fabric from which a force sensor is manufactured and used to detect the heartbeat of a human.

  • Characterization of Binding of Magnetic Nanoparticles to Rolling Circle Amplification Products by Turn-On Magnetic Assay
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Biosensors-Basel. - : MDPI AG. ; 9:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The specific binding of oligonucleotide-tagged 100 nm magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to rolling circle products (RCPs) is investigated using our newly developed differential homogenous magnetic assay (DHMA). The DHMA measures ac magnetic susceptibility from a test and a control samples simultaneously and eliminates magnetic background signal. Therefore, the DHMA can reveal details of binding kinetics of magnetic nanoparticles at very low concentrations of RCPs. From the analysis of the imaginary part of the DHMA signal, we find that smaller MNPs in the particle ensemble bind first to the RCPs. When the RCP concentration increases, we observe the formation of agglomerates, which leads to lower number of MNPs per RCP at higher concentrations of RCPs. The results thus indicate that a full frequency range of ac susceptibility observation is necessary to detect low concentrations of target RCPs and a long amplification time is not required as it does not significantly increase the number of MNPs per RCP. The findings are critical for understanding the underlying microscopic binding process for improving the assay performance. They furthermore suggest DHMA is a powerful technique for dynamically characterizing the binding interactions between MNPs and biomolecules in fluid volumes.

  • Homogeneous Differential Magnetic Assay
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Acs Sensors. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2379-3694. ; 4:9, s. 2381-2388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Assays are widely used for detection of various targets, including pathogens, drugs, and toxins. Homogeneous assays are promising for the realization of point-of-care diagnostics as they do not require separation, immobilization, or washing steps. For low concentrations of target molecules, the speed and sensitivity of homogeneous assays have hitherto been limited by slow binding kinetics, time-consuming amplification steps, and the presence of a high background signal. Here, we present a homogeneous differential magnetic assay that utilizes a differential magnetic readout that eliminates previous limitations of homogeneous assays. The assay uses a gradiometer sensor configuration combined with precise microfluidic sample handling. This enables simultaneous differential measurement sample containing a synthesized Vibrio cholerae target and a negative control sample, which reduces the background signal and increases the readout speed. Very low concentrations of targets down to femtomolar levels are thus detectable without any additional amplification of the number of targets. Our homogeneous differential magnetic assay method opens new possibilities for rapid and highly sensitive diagnostics at the point of care.

  • High magnetoelectric coupling of Metglas and P(VDF-TrFE) laminates
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetoelectric (magnetic/piezoelectric) heterostructures bring new functionalities to develop novel transducer devices such as (wireless) sensors or energy harvesters and thus have been attracting research interest in the last years. We have studied the magnetoelectric coupling between Metglas films (2826 MB) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) in a laminate structure. The metallic Metglas film itself served as bottom electrode and as top electrode we used an electrically conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). Besides a direct electrical wiring via a graphite ink, a novel contactless readout method is presented using a capacitive coupling between the PEDOT:PSS layer and an electrode not in contact with the PEDOT:PSS layer. From the experimental result we determined a magnetoelectric coupling of 1445 V/(cm·Oe) at the magnetoelastic resonance of the structure, which is among the highest reported values for laminate structures of a magnetostrictive and a piezoelectric polymer layer. With the noncontact readout method, a magnetoelectric coupling of about 950 V/(cm·Oe) could be achieved, which surpasses previously reported values for the case of direct sample contacting. 2D laser Doppler vibrometer measurements in combination with FE simulations were applied to reveal the complex vibration pattern resulting in the strong resonant response.
