  • The brain monitoring with information technology (BrainIT) collaborative network : data validation results
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Neurochirurgica Supplements. - Vienna : Springer Vienna. - 9783211855775 - 9783211855782 ; , s. 217-221
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background The BrainIT group works collaboratively on developing standards for collection and analyses of data from brain injured patients towards providing a more efficient infrastructure for assessing new health technology. Materials and methods Over a 2 year period, core dataset data (grouped by nine categories) were collected from 200 head-injured patients by local nursing staff. Data were uploaded by the BrainIT web and random samples of received data were selected automatically by computer for validation by data validation (DV) research nurse staff against gold standard sources held in the local centre. Validated data was compared with original data sent and percentage error rates calculated by data category. Findings Comparisons, 19,461, were made in proportion to the size of the data received with the largest number checked in laboratory data (5,667) and the least in the surgery data (567). Error rates were generally less than or equal to 6%, the exception being the surgery data class where an unacceptably high error rate of 34% was found. Conclusions The BrainIT core dataset (with the exception of the surgery classification) is feasible and accurate to collect. The surgery classification needs to be revised.

  • International Cooperation for Remote Laboratory Use
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Contributions to Higher Engineering Education. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811089176 ; , s. 1-31
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimenting is fundamental to the training process of all scientists and engineers. While experiments have been traditionally done inside laboratories, the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies added two alternatives accessible anytime, anywhere. These two alternatives are known as virtual and remote laboratories and are sometimes indistinguishably referred as online laboratories. Similarly to other instructional technologies, virtual and remote laboratories require some effort from teachers in integrating them into curricula, taking into consideration several factors that affect their adoption (i.e., cost) and their educational effectiveness (i.e., benefit). This chapter analyzes these two dimensions and sustains the case where only through international cooperation it is possible to serve the large number of teachers and students involved in engineering education. It presents an example in the area of electrical and electronics engineering, based on a remote laboratory named Virtual Instruments System in Reality, and it then describes how a number of European and Latin American institutions have been cooperating under the scope of an Erasmus+ project, for spreading its use in Brazil and Argentina.

  • Population and Employment Change in US Metropolitan Areas
  • 2019. - 1
  • Ingår i: Population, Place, and Spatial Interaction. - : Springer. - 9789811392306 - 9789811392313 ; , s. 95-113
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The regional adjustment model is used to analyze changes in population and employment across the American metropolitan landscape between 1990 and 2015. Estimates are made for the effects of natural and human-created amenities on population change and the effects of wages, self-employment, patents, economic specialization, and age composition on employment change. Short-run impacts, estimated by linear regression, allow identification of a 2 by 2 “growth operator” matrix; long-run impacts are estimated by powering this matrix. In the early years of the 25-year study period, employment numbers largely drove population change, but, once the direction of causality reversed, population numbers largely drove employment change. Clearly, the balance between the overall effects of population and employment can shift over long periods of time.

  • Birth of a Magnetosphere
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Magnetospheres in the Solar System. - : John Wiley & Sons. ; , s. 427-439, s. 427-439
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A magnetosphere may form around an object in a stellar wind either due to the intrinsic magnetic field of the object or stellar wind interaction with the ionosphere of the object. Comets represent the most variable magnetospheres in our solar system, and through the Rosetta mission we have had the chance to study the birth and evolution of a comet magnetosphere as the comet nucleus approached the Sun. We review the birth of the comet magnetosphere as observed at comet 67P Churyumov–Gerasimenko, the formation of plasma boundaries and how the solar wind–atmosphere interaction changes character as the cometary gas cloud and magnetosphere grow in size. Mass loading of the solar wind leads to an asymmetric deflection of the solar wind for low outgassing rates. With increasing activity a solar wind ion cavity forms. Intermittent shock‐like features were also observed. For intermediate outgassing rate a diamagnetic cavity is formed inside the solar wind ion cavity, thus well separated from the solar wind. The cometary plasma was typically very structured and variable. The region of the coma dense enough to have significant collisions forms a special region with different ion chemistry and plasma dynamics as compared to the outer collision‐free region.
