  • Microcapsule functionalization enables rate-determining release from cellulose nonwovens for long-term performance
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry B. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7518 .- 2050-750X. ; 11:12, s. 2693-2699
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Functional textiles is a rapidly growing product segment in which sustained release of actives often plays a key role. Failure to sustain the release results in costs due to premature loss of functionality and resource inefficiency. Conventional application methods such as impregnation lead to an excessive and uncontrolled release, which - for biocidal actives - results in environmental pollution. In this study, microcapsules are presented as a means of extending the release from textile materials. The hydrophobic model substance pyrene is encapsulated in poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) microcapsules which subsequently are loaded into cellulose nonwovens using a solution blowing technique. The release of encapsulated pyrene is compared to that of two conventional functionalization methods: surface and bulk impregnation. The apparent diffusion coefficient is 100 times lower for encapsulated pyrene compared to impregnated pyrene. This clearly demonstrates the rate-limiting barrier properties added by the microcapsules, extending the potential functionality from hours to weeks.

  • Production planning for district heating networks (DHN)
  • 2014. - 8
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • District Heating Networks (DHN) can provide higher efficiencies and better pollution control compared to local heat generation. However, there are still many areas, which can be improved and optimized in these systems. A DHN is a complex distributed system of different customer substations and components such as boilers, accumulators, pipes, and in many cases also turbines for electricity production. How to schedule the components with the objective of maximizing the profit of heat and electricity production over a finite time horizon is receiving increased attention, and is the problem that has been dealt with in this work. This mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem has been formulated as a unit commitment problem (UCP), which involves finding the most profitable unit dispatch regarding production costs and heat and electricity sell prices, while simultaneously meeting the predicted district heating demands and satisfying network operational constraints. The heating demands within the optimization time horizon are predicted based on season and weather forecasts. In this work, the district heating plant in Uppsala, Sweden, owned by Vattenfall AB, has been considered as a reference plant for modeling and optimization. The optimization model is formulated in Python using Pyomo modeling language, and solved by Gurobi and GLPK solvers. An hourly- based data of five consecutive days is used as the time horizon. The results demonstrate the fact that with an accurate model of the DHN, it is possible to significantly increase the revenue of the DHN by finding the most economical way to dispatch different production components.

  • A numerical comparison of protective measures againstexternal fire spread
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fire and Materials. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0308-0501 .- 1099-1018. ; 42:5, s. 493-507
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of different passive protective measures against external vertical firespread was investigated using the numerical tool Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS).The numerical study was divided into a validation study and a comparative analysis. The validation study was performed to evaluate FDS as a calculation tool for modellingexternal vertical fire spread and was conducted using experimental results from alarge‐scale fire test done on a SP FIRE 105 test rig at SP, Sweden. It was concludedthat FDS 6.2.0 could reproduce the experimental results with a reasonable level ofdetail. In the comparative analysis, the impact on the external fire from a smallerapartment was studied in FDS with different configurations of horizontal projectionsand spandrels in the building exterior. Also, the effects of an upper and lower facadeset‐back configuration were studied. The results show that facade solutions based ona horizontal projection or an upper facade set‐back configuration result in comparableor better protection compared with a defined spandrel height. The results also showthat a spandrel height of at least 1.2 m can be replaced by a 60‐cm‐deep horizontalprojection, given that the balcony is wider than the underlying opening.

  • Challenges of Adopting SAFe in the Banking Industry – A Study Two Years After Its Introduction
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: XP 2021: Agile Processes in Software Engineering and Extreme Programming.Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing book series (LNBIP, volume 419). - Cham : Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. - 1865-1356 .- 1865-1348. - 9783030780975 ; , s. 157-171
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is a framework for scaling agile methods in large organizations. We have found several experience reports and white papers describing SAFe adoptions in different banks, which indicates that SAFe is being used in the banking industry. However, there is a lack of academic publications on the topic, the banking industry is missing in the scientific reports analyzing SAFe transformations. To fill this gap, we present a study on the main challenges with a SAFe transformation at a large full-service bank. We identify the challenges in the bank under study and compare the findings with experience reports from other banks, as well as with research on SAFe transformations in other domains. Many of the challenges reported in this paper overlap with the generic SAFe challenges, including management and organization, education and training, culture and mindset, requirements engineering, quality assurance, and systems architecture. However, we also report some novel challenges specific to the banking domain, e.g., the risk of jeopardizing customer relations, stability, and trust of external stakeholders. This study validates several SAFe-related challenges reported in previous work in the banking context. It also brings up some novel challenges specific to the banking industry. Therefore, we believe our results are particularly useful to practitioners responsible for SAFe transformations at other banks. © 2021, The Author(s).

  • Solution-Spinning of a Collection of Micro- and Nanocarrier-Functionalized Polysaccharide Fibers
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Macromolecular materials and engineering. - : John Wiley and Sons Inc. - 1438-7492 .- 1439-2054. ; 307:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Continuous polysaccharide fibers and nonwovens—based on cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, chitosan, or alginate—containing biopolymeric microcapsules (MC) or mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) are prepared using a wet-spinning or solution blowing technique. The MCs are homogeneously distributed in the fiber matrices whereas the MSNs form discrete micron-sized aggregates as demonstrated using scanning electron-, fluorescence-, and confocal microscopy. By encapsulating the model compound pyrene, it is shown that 95% of the substance remains in the fiber during the formation process as compared to only 7% for the nonencapsulated substance. The material comprising the MC has a strong impact on the release behavior of the encapsulated pyrene as investigated using methanol extraction. MCs based on poly(l-lactic acid) prove to be practically impermeable with no pyrene released in contrast to MCs based on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) which allow for diffusion of pyrene through the MC and fiber as visualized using fluorescence microscopy. © 2022 The Authors.

  • A solution blown superporous nonwoven hydrogel based on hydroxypropyl cellulose
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Soft Matter. ; 16:29, s. 6850-6861
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A superporous hydrogel - in which the interconnecting fibres themselves are hydrogels - based on hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) has been produced using the nonwoven solution blown technique. The nonwoven fibres were subsequently thermally crosslinked with citric acid as identified by esterbond formation using FT-IR spectroscopy. The gel fraction was approximately 70%. The superporous HPC hydrogel exhibited a very fast water absorption, reaching an equilibrium absorption (80% water content) within 30 seconds. The equilibrium absorption was strongly codependent on both the fibre thickness and the pore size whereas the absorption rate was correlated with the pore size as established using standard linearized regression analysis.
