  • All-printed diode operating at 1.6 GHz
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 111:33, s. 11943-11948
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Printed electronics are considered for wireless electronic tags and sensors within the future Internet-of-things (IoT) concept. As a consequence of the low charge carrier mobility of present printable organic and inorganic semiconductors, the operational frequency of printed rectifiers is not high enough to enable direct communication and powering between mobile phones and printed e-tags. Here, we report an all-printed diode operating up to 1.6 GHz. The device, based on two stacked layers of Si and NbSi2 particles, is manufactured on a flexible substrate at low temperature and in ambient atmosphere. The high charge carrier mobility of the Si microparticles allows device operation to occur in the charge injection-limited regime. The asymmetry of the oxide layers in the resulting device stack leads to rectification of tunneling current. Printed diodes were combined with antennas and electrochromic displays to form an all-printed e-tag. The harvested signal from a Global System for Mobile Communications mobile phone was used to update the display. Our findings demonstrate a new communication pathway for printed electronics within IoT applications.

  • Biomarkers of Coagulation, Inflammation, and Angiogenesis are Independently Associated with Preeclampsia
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: AMERICAN JOURNAL OF REPRODUCTIVE IMMUNOLOGY. - : John Wiley and Sons. - 1046-7408 .- 8755-8920. ; 68:3, s. 258-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Problem Although preeclampsia has been associated with inflammation, coagulation, and angiogenesis, their correlation and relative contribution are unknown. Method of Study About 114 women with preeclampsia, 31 with early onset (EOP) and 83 with late onset preeclampsia (LOP), and 100 normal pregnant controls were included. A broad panel of 32 biomarkers reflecting coagulation, inflammation, and angiogenesis was analyzed. Results Preeclampsia was associated with decreased antithrombin, IL-4 and placental growth factor levels and with increased C3a, pentraxin-3, and sFlt-1 levels, with more marked differences in the EOP group. The Th1-associated chemokines CXCL10 and CXCL11 were significantly higher in the preeclampsia and EOP group than in controls, respectively. No correlations between the biomarkers were found in preeclampsia. Multivariate logistic regression tests confirmed the results. Conclusions Cytokines, chemokines and complement activation seem to be part of a Th1-like inflammatory reaction in preeclampsia, most pronounced in EOP, where chemokines may be more useful than cytokines as biomarkers. Biomarkers were not correlated suggesting partly independent or in time separated mechanisms.

  • The Swedish RAND-36 Health Survey - reliability and responsiveness assessed in patient populations using Svensson's method for paired ordinal data.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of patient-reported outcomes. - : Springer Publishing Company. - 2509-8020. ; 2:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The Short Form 36-Item Survey is one of the most commonly used instruments for assessing health-related quality of life. Two identical versions of the original instrument are currently available: the public domain, license free RAND-36 and the commercial SF-36.RAND-36 is not available in Swedish. The purpose of this study was threefold: to translate and culturally adapt the RAND-36 into Swedish; to evaluate its reliability and responsiveness using Svensson's method for paired ordered categorical data; and to assess the usability of an electronic version of the questionnaire. The translation process included forward and backward translations and reconciliation. Test-retest reliability was examined during a period of two-weeks in 84 patients undergoing dialysis for chronic kidney disease. Responsiveness was examined in 97 patients before and 2 months after a cardiac rehabilitation program. Usability tests and cognitive debriefing of the electronic questionnaire were carried out with 18 patients. Results: The Swedish translation of the RAND-36 was conceptually equivalent to the English version. Test-retest reliability was supported by non-significant relative position (RP) values among dialysis patients for all RAND-36 subscales (range - 0.02 to 0.10; all confidence intervals (CI) included zero). Responsiveness was demonstrated by significant improvements in RP values among cardiac rehabilitation patients for all subscales (range 0.22-0.36; lower limits of all CI > 0.1) except two subscales (General health, RP -0.02; CI -0.13 to 0.10; and Role functioning/emotional, RP 0.03; CI -0.09 to 0.16). In cardiac rehabilitation patients, sizable individual variation (RV > 0.2) was also shown for the Pain, Energy/fatigue and Social functioning subscales. The electronic version of RAND-36 was found easy and intuitive to use. Conclusions: Our results provide evidence supporting the reliability and responsiveness of the newly translated Swedish RAND-36 and the user-friendliness of the electronic version. Svensson's method for paired ordinal data was able to characterize not only the direction and size of differences among the patients' responses at different time points but also variations in response patterns within groups. The method is therefore, besides being suitable for ordinal data, also an important and novel tool for gaining insights into patients' response patterns to treatment or interventions, thus informing individualized care.

  • Screen printed digital circuits based on vertical organicelectrochemical transistors
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Flexible and Printed Electronics. - : IOP Publishing. - 2058-8585. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vertical organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have been manufactured solely using screenprinting. The OECTs are based on PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrene sulfonic acid)), which defines the active material for both the transistor channel and the gateelectrode. The resulting vertical OECT devices and circuits exhibit low-voltage operation, relativelyfast switching, small footprint and high manufacturing yield; the last three parameters are explainedby the reliance of the transistor configuration on a robust structure in which the electrolyte verticallybridges the bottom channel and the top gate electrode. Two different architectures of the verticalOECT have been manufactured, characterized and evaluated in parallel throughout this report. Inaddition to the experimental work, SPICE models enabling simulations of standalone OECTs andOECT-based circuits have been developed. Our findings may pave the way for fully integrated, lowvoltageoperating and printed signal processing systems integrated with e.g. printed batteries, solarcells, sensors and communication interfaces. Such technology can then serve a low-cost basetechnology for the internet of things, smart packaging and home diagnostics applications.

  • Fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli among the rectal flora is the predominant risk factor for severe infection after transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy : a prospective observational study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of urology. - : Medical Journals Sweden. - 2168-1805 .- 2168-1813. ; 58, s. 32-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Infection of the prostate gland following biopsy, usually with Escherichia coli, is a common complication, despite the use of antimicrobial prophylaxis. A fluoroquinolone (FQ) is commonly prescribed as prophylaxis. Worryingly, the rate of fluoroquinolone-resistant (FQ-R) E. coli species has been shown to be increasing. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with infection after transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (TRUS-Bx). METHODS: This was a prospective study on patients undergoing TRUS-Bx in southeast Sweden. Prebiopsy rectal and urine cultures were obtained, and antimicrobial susceptibility and risk-group stratification were determined. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify independent risk factors for post-biopsy urinary tract infection (UTI) and FQ-R E. coli in the rectal flora. RESULTS: In all, 283 patients were included, of whom 18 (6.4%) developed post-TRUS-Bx UTIs. Of these, 10 (3.5%) had an UTI without systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and 8 (2.8%) had a UTI with SIRS. Being in the medium- or high-risk groups of infectious complications was not an independent risk factor for UTI with SIRS after TRUS-Bx, but low-level FQ-resistance (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC): 0.125-0.25 mg/L) or FQ-resistance (MIC > 0.5 mg/L) among E. coli in the faecal flora was. Risk for SIRS increased in parallel with increasing degrees of FQ-resistance. Significant risk factor for harbouring FQ-R E.coli was travelling outside Europe within the previous 12 months. CONCLUSION: The predominant risk factor for UTI with SIRS after TRUS-Bx was FQ-R E. coli among the faecal flora. The difficulty in identifying this type of risk factor demonstrates a need for studies on the development of a general approach either with rectal swab culture for targeted prophylaxis, or prior rectal preparation with a bactericidal agent such as povidone-iodine before TRUS-Bx to reduce the risk of FQ-R E. coli-related infection.

  • Flexible active matrix addressed displays manufactured by printing and coating techniques
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Polymer Science Part B. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0887-6266 .- 1099-0488. ; 51:4, s. 265-271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A flexible electrochromic active matrix addressed display, including 8 × 8 pixels, is demonstrated by using solution processing based on standard printing and coating manufacturing techniques. Each organic electrochromic display (OECD) pixel and its corresponding organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) are located on different sides of the flexible PET substrate. Electronic vias generated through the plastic substrate connects each OECD pixel with one addressing OECT. When comparing this display with actively addressed OECDs with all its components located on the same side, the present approach based on this electronic via substrate provides an enhanced pixel resolution and a relatively more simplified manufacturing process.

  • Single Nucleotide Polymorphism and Cancer Risk, Tumour Recurrence, or Survival of Head and Neck Cancer Patients
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Oncology. - : S. Karger AG. - 0030-2414 .- 1423-0232. ; 92, s. 161-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: This paper aims at studying the influence of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on cancer risk, tumor recurrence, and survival in head and neck (H&N) cancer patients. Methods: A total of 45 SNPs in 41 genes were investigated. A total of 174 Caucasian H&N cancer patients and 245 healthy blood donors were enrolled in the study. Results: Ten SNPs were associated with H&N cancer risk, but the identified SNPs differed among males and females. Some of the SNPs were related to immune response genes. The immune response gene SNPs were also related to survival. In particular, we noted that the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) rs1800629 could have an influence on cancer risk, tumor recurrence as well as survival. Conclusion: Genetic variation of the TNFα rs1800629 might be useful as a biomarker in clinical decision-making since it was found to be related to cancer risk, tumor recurrence, and survival of H&N cancer patients.

  • Secondary Acute Myeloid Leukemia and the Role of Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation in a Population-Based Setting
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Biology of blood and marrow transplantation. - : Elsevier. - 1083-8791 .- 1523-6536. ; 25:9, s. 1770-1778
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Secondary AML (s-AML), including AML with an antecedent hematologic disorder (AHD-AML) and therapy-related AML (t-AML), constitutes a large proportion of patients with AML and is considered to confer a dismal prognosis. The role of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in patients with s-AML and the extent to which HCT is performed in these patients has been little studied to date. We used the population-based Swedish AML Registry comprising 3337 intensively treated adult patients over a 17-year period to study the role of HCT within the group of patients with s-AML as well as compared with patients with de novo AML. HCT was performed in 576 patients (22%) with de novo AML, in 74 patients (17%) with AHD-AML, and in 57 patients (20%) with t-AML. At 5 years after diagnosis, there were no survivors among patients with previous myeloproliferative neoplasms who did not undergo HCT, and corresponding survival for patients with antecedent myelodysplastic syndromes and t-AML was and 2% and 4%, respectively. HCT was compared with chemotherapy consolidation in s-AML using 3 models: (1) a 200-day landmark analysis, in which HCT was favorable compared with conventional consolidation (P = .04, log-rank test); (2) a multivariable Cox regression with HCT as a time-dependent variable, in which the hazard ratio for mortality was 0.73 (95% confidence interval, 0.64 to 0.83) for HCT and favored HCT in all subgroups; and (3) a propensity score matching analysis, in which the 5-year overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival in patients with s-AML in first complete remission (CR1) was 48% and 43%, respectively, for patients undergoing HCT versus 20% and 21%, respectively, for those receiving chemotherapy consolidation (P = .01 and .02, respectively, log-rank test). Our observational data suggest that HCT improves survival and offers the only realistic curative treatment option in patients with s-AML.

  • Associations of central and brachial blood pressure with cognitive function : a population-based study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Human Hypertension. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0950-9240 .- 1476-5527. ; 30:2, s. 95-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous observational studies on the association between brachial blood pressure (BP) and cognition have reported conflicting results. Central BP has been hypothesized to be more strongly related to cognition than brachial BP. The aim of this study was to assess the association between brachial as well as central BP and cognitive function, both cross-sectionally and with brachial BP measured 17 years before cognitive testing. The study population comprised 2548 individuals aged 61-85 years at follow-up (61.4% women). The cognitive tests administered were A Quick Test of cognitive speed and the Mini Mental State Examination. In fully adjusted linear regressions, small but significant cross-sectional associations were found between higher BP (systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure) and worse results on both of the cognitive tests (P-values <0.05). No significant prospective associations were found. Central BP did not show a stronger association than brachial BP did. After stratification, significant results were mainly found in the group taking BP-lowering drugs at follow-up. In summary, these findings add to existing evidence on the relationship between BP and cognition, but they do not support a superior role of central compared with brachial BP in the elderly.
