  • A Multidimensional Perspective on Collocational Patterning in Swedish Fiction Texts Translated from English
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Literary and Linguistic Computing. - 0268-1145. ; 21:Supplement 1, s. 113-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article evaluates a method of frequency-based retrieval of translation-specific linguistic surface patterning on the basis of two pilot corpus studies of fiction translated from English into Swedish. The focus of the article is on the relevance of different methods for corpus research on source language transfer, necessary grammatical adaptation, and translation strategies conditioned by non-imperative cross-linguistic factors. The two studies, which started from overrepresentation of grammatical words, indicated that the overall distribution differences are related to register differences, source language transfer due to cross-linguistic compatibility, and grammatical adaptation due to target language syntactic restrictions. It is hypothesized that the method used will be suitable primarily for cross-linguistic textual and register-oriented study as well as for the study of necessary adaptations to target language grammatical restrictions. On the basis of this hypothesis, it is suggested that the search for translation corpus patterning indicative of other features than these will benefit from a more theory-driven orientation, although semi-automatic corpus markup is likely to play an important part in the development of new theories and methods.

  • An assessment of the translation-specificity of over-represented multi-word patterns in Swedish fiction texts translated from English
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Linguistica Antverpiensia. ; 1, s. 407-417
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses in what sense an over-represented multi-word pattern in a corpus of translated texts can be said to be typical of translated text. The purpose of the discussion is to assess, from a quantitative as well as from a qualitative perspective, the status of translational collocation data retrieved through data-driven methods from a comparable and parallel aligned corpus of English and Swedish original and translated texts. The study focuses on the explicitation of clausal relations in translations from English into Swedish. In some cases, lexical and grammatical contrast lead to explicitation, but in others explicitation is due to different factors.

  • Translation-specific lexicogrammar? Characteristic lexical and collocational patterning in Swedish texts translated from En
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Translation Universals - Do They Exist?. ; , s. 129-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on an investigation of the Swedish grammatical word av (‘of’, ‘by’), which is overrepresented in Swedish fiction translations from English in relation to Swedish non-translated fiction texts in the comparable part of The English-Swedish Parallel Corpus (ESPC). The study also incorporated the most significantly overrepresented collocational patterns involving av. Through the investigation it became clear that the overrepresentation of av is general and significant, and that there is also significant overrepresentation of associated patterns involving lexical as well as grammatical words. The study further indicated that the patterns are mainly due to source language transfer.

  • Psychoacoustic evaluation as a tool for optimization in the development of an urban soundscape simulator
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 5th Audio Mostly - A Conference on Interaction With Sound, AM '10. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450300469 ; , s. 1859802-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper will discuss the use of psychoacoustic evaluation as a tool for optimization of the soundscape simulator developed in the Listen project. The listen project is a three-year research project focused around developing a demonstrator, which auralizes the sound environment produced by road and railway traffic. The resolution of the parameter space of the simulator heavily influences the performance of the simulator. The perceptual resolution of the parameter space is investigated and the resolution is adjusted accordingly. The most important parameter is velocity. Adjustments of the resolution of this parameter alone gives a 60% reduction of the usage of memory.

  • The 'Führerschule' in Alt Rehse: A character school for the physicians of National Socialist Germany.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Vesalius : acta internationales historiae medicinae. - 1373-4857. ; 17:2, s. 68-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This contribution traces the international contacts and impact of the leader school for German doctors ('Führerschule der deutschen Arzteschaft') in Alt Rehse 1935-1943 through studies of a visitors' book and of biographies. We suggest that the 'Föhrerschule', an institution providing political and ideological education for health professionals, interested non-German physicians to a larger extent than earlier described. This paper also highlights a few examples of non-German physicians who, for various reasons, visited the 'Führerschule' in Alt Rehse.

  • Arctic sustainability research : Past, present and future
  • 2017
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Arctic is one of the world’s regions most affected by cultural, socio-economic, environmental, and climatic changes. Over the last two decades, scholars, policymakers, extractive industries, governments, intergovernmental forums, and non-governmental organizations have turned their attention to the Arctic, its peoples, resources, and to the challenges and benefits of impending transformations. Arctic sustainability is an issue of increasing concern as well as the resilience and adaptation of Arctic societies to changing conditions. This book offers key insights into the history, current state of knowledge and the future of sustainability, and sustainable development research in the Arctic. Written by an international, interdisciplinary team of experts, it presents a comprehensive progress report on Arctic sustainability research. It identifies key knowledge gaps and provides salient recommendations for prioritizing research in the next decade. Arctic Sustainability Research will appeal to researchers, academics, and policymakers interested in sustainability science and the practices of sustainable development, as well as those working in polar studies, climate change, political geography, and the history of science.
