- Demands for decreased environmental impact from vehicles are resulting in a strong push for decreased engine oil, fuel consumption and weight. New machining and coating technologies have offered ways to attack these problems. Engine oil and fuel consumption are to a great extent controlled by the topography of the cylinder liner surface and it is therefore important to optimise this surface. Recent engine tests have shown a reduction in oil consumption when using cylinder liners with a smoother finish than that given by the current plateau honing. However, engine manufacturers are hesitant to introduce smoother liner surfaces because of fears of severe wear and scuffing. There is also the possibility that smoother liner surfaces may be more sensitive to the choice of piston ring finishes. This paper therefore seeks to investigate the functional performance and resistance to wear of these smooth cylinder liners and the mating top ring surfaces. Copyright © 2005 by ASME

- A polyethylene plant model coded in Modelica and based on a nonlinear MPC model currently used at Borealis AB is considered for calibration. A case study of model calibration at steady-state for four different operating points are analysed, both when looking at one operating point separately, but also to calibrate several simultaneously. Both model parameters and reactor inputs are calibrated for true plant measurement data. To solve the parameter estimation problem, the JModelica.org platform is used, offering tools to express and solve calibration problems. Calibration was obtained with narrow confidence intervals and shows a potential to improve the model accuracy by changing the parameter values. The results will be used for dynamic optimisations of grade changes.

- The aim of this mainly descriptive study is to sketch out how recently graduated physicians experience the transition from higher education to working life. As a part of a more extensive research project 12 physicians, who had been working for a few months, were interviewed. The physicians were asked to talk about what they perceived as central aspects of their university-education and what they had learned, their experience of the transition and the first encounter with working life. During the qualitative analysis a complex picture of the process has emerged and it is difficult to distinguish any homogeneity in the physicians’ experiences.

Proton irradiation response of CsI(Tl) crystals for the GLAST calorimeter

- The electromagnetic calorimeter of the Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) consists of 16 towers of CsI(Tl) crystals. Each tower contains 8 layers of crystals (each 326.0x26.7x19.9 mm3) arranged in a hodoscopic fashion. The crystals are read out at both ends with photodiodes. Crystals produced by Amcrys-H (Ukraine) are used. A full size crystal was irradiated with a 180 MeV proton beam and the radiation induced attenuation was measured. The induced radioactivity of the crystal was also studied. In this paper we will discuss the damage due to proton irradiation and compare this with the expected in-orbit background flux.

- The electromagnetic calorimeter of the Gamma ray Large Area Space Telescope(GLAST) consists of 16 towers of CsI(Tl) crystals. Each tower contains 8layers of crystals (each 326.0×26.7×19.9 mm3) arranged in a hodoscopic fashion.The crystals are read out at both ends with PIN photodiodes. Crystals producedby Amcrys-H (Ukraine) are used. As a part of the quality control procedureduring crystal production, samples from the uncut boules are systematically irradiatedwith gamma rays from a 60Co source. Studies have also been carried outto verify the correspondence between the post-irradiation properties of the boulesamples and the full size crystals which are subsequently cut from the boule. Thefull size crystals have also been irradiated with a 180 MeV proton beam and theradiation induced attenuation measured.
