  • Particle physics at the European Spallation Source
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 1023, s. 1-84
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world’s brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. These encompass the exploitation of both the neutrons and neutrinos produced at the ESS for high precision (sensitivity) measurements (searches).

  • Adaptability of Trametes versicolor to the lignocellulosic inhibitors furfural, HMF, phenol and levulinic acid during ethanol fermentation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Biomass and Bioenergy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0961-9534 .- 1873-2909. ; 90, s. 95-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ligno-cellulosic biofuels, notably ethanol produced in processes involving biological fermentation, have high potential as renewable alternatives to fossil fuels. However, ligno-cellulose pretreatment procedures generate substances that inhibit current biocatalysts. Thus, efficient methods are required for improving these organisms' tolerance or developing new biocatalysts with higher tolerance to the inhibitors. For this, greater knowledge of the mechanisms involved is needed. Therefore, we examined effects of common inhibitors (phenol, levulinic acid, HMF (hydroxymethylfurfural) and furfural) on growth, utilization of sugars (xylose, mannose and glucose) and enzyme activities of a tolerant organism, the white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor, during 15-day incubations. The fungus metabolized and grew in the presence of all the inhibitors (singly and together) at the applied concentration (0.2–0.6 g/L). When all inhibitors were added, no significant effect of sugar utilization was shown. However, levulinic acid added solely reduced xylose (but not xylose-degrading enzymes) and mannose utilization, but not glucose utilization. Physiological and biotechnological implications of the findings are discussed such as usage of T. versicolor as a detoxifying agent in ethanol production.

  • Biobutanol Production by Clostridium acetobutylicum Using Xylose Recovered from Birch Kraft Black Liquor
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Bioresource Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-8524 .- 1873-2976. ; 176, s. 71-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol (ABE) fermentation was studied using acid-hydrolyzed xylan recovered from hardwood Kraft black liquor by CO2 acidification as the only carbon source. Detoxification of hydrolyzate using activated carbon was conducted to evaluate the impact of inhibitor removal and fermentation. Xylose hydrolysis yields as high as 18.4% were demonstrated at the highest severity hydrolysis condition. Detoxification using active carbon was effective for removal of both phenolics (76-81%) and HMF (38-52%). Batch fermentation of the hydrolyzate and semi-defined P2 media resulted in a total solvent yield of 0.12-0.13 g/g and 0.34 g/g, corresponding to a butanol concentration of 1.8-2.1 g/L and 7.3 g/L respectively. This work is the first study of a process for the production of a biologically-derived biofuel from hemicelluloses solubilized during Kraft pulping and demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing xylan recovered directly from industrial Kraft pulping liquors as a feedstock for biological production of biofuels such as butanol.

  • Evolution of the ion environment of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 583
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. The Rosetta spacecraft is escorting comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from a heliocentric distance of >3.6 AU, where the comet activity was low, until perihelion at 1.24 AU. Initially, the solar wind permeates the thin comet atmosphere formed from sublimation. Aims. Using the Rosetta Plasma Consortium Ion Composition Analyzer (RPC-ICA), we study the gradual evolution of the comet ion environment, from the first detectable traces of water ions to the stage where cometary water ions accelerated to about 1 keV energy are abundant. We compare ion fluxes of solar wind and cometary origin. Methods. RPC-ICA is an ion mass spectrometer measuring ions of solar wind and cometary origins in the 10 eV-40 keV energy range. Results. We show how the flux of accelerated water ions with energies above 120 eV increases between 3.6 and 2.0 AU. The 24 h average increases by 4 orders of magnitude, mainly because high-flux periods become more common. The water ion energy spectra also become broader with time. This may indicate a larger and more uniform source region. At 2.0 AU the accelerated water ion flux is frequently of the same order as the solar wind proton flux. Water ions of 120 eV-few keV energy may thus constitute a significant part of the ions sputtering the nucleus surface. The ion density and mass in the comet vicinity is dominated by ions of cometary origin. The solar wind is deflected and the energy spectra broadened compared to an undisturbed solar wind. Conclusions. The flux of accelerated water ions moving from the upstream direction back toward the nucleus is a strongly nonlinear function of the heliocentric distance.

  • Venus ion outflow estimates at solar minimum : Influence of reference frames and disturbed solar wind conditions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 118:6, s. 3592-3601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent estimates of ion escape rates from Venus, based on ASPERA-4 data, differ by more than a factor of 4. Whereas the ASPERA-4 instrument provides state-of-the art observations, the limited field of view of the instrument and the strongly limited geographical coverage of the spacecraft orbit means that significant assumptions must be used in the interpretation of the data. We complement previous studies by using a method of average distribution functions to obtain as good statistics as possible while taking the limited field of view into account. We use more than 3 years of data, more than any of the previous studies, and investigate how the choice of a geographical reference frame or a solar wind electric field oriented reference frame affects the results. We find that the choice of reference frame cannot explain the difference between the previously published reports. Our results, based on a larger data set, fall in between the previous studies. Our conclusion is that the difference between previous studies is caused by the large variability of ion outflow at Venus. It matters significantly for the end result which data are selected and which time period is used. The average escape rates were found to be 5.2±1.0×1024 s−1for heavy ions (m/q ≥16) and 14±2.6×1024 s−1for protons. We also discuss the spatial distribution of the planetary ion outflow in the solar wind electric field reference frame.

  • Simplified methods for crack risk analyses of early age concrete : Part 2: Restraint factors for typical case wall-on-slab
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nordic Concrete Research. - 0800-6377. ; 46:2, s. 39-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing restraint curves have been applied to the method of artificial neural networks (ANN) to model restraint in the wall for the typical structure wall-on-slab. It has been proven that ANN is capable of modeling the restraint with good accuracy. The usage of the neural network has been demonstrated to give a clear picture of the relative importance of the input parameters. Further, it is shown that the results from the neural network can be represented by a series of basic weight and response functions. Thus, the results can easily be made available to any engineer without use of complicated software.

  • Hybrid modeling of cometary plasma environments : II. Remote-sensing of a cometary bow shock
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 630
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. The ESA Rosetta probe has not seen direct evidence of a fully formed bow shock at comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P). Ion spectrometer measurements of cometary pickup ions measured in the vicinity of the nucleus of 67P are available and may contain signatures of the large-scale plasma environment.Aims. The aim is to investigate the possibility of using pickup ion signatures to infer the existence or nonexistence of a bow shock-like structure and possibly other large-scale plasma environment features.Methods. A numerical plasma model in the hybrid plasma description was used to model the plasma environment of a comet. Simulated pickup ion spectra were generated for different interplanetary magnetic field conditions. The results were interpreted through test particle tracing in the hybrid simulation solutions.Results. Features of the observed pickup ion energy spectrum were reproduced, and the model was used to interpret the observation to be consistent with a shock-like structure. We identify (1) a spectral break related to the bow shock, (2) a mechanism for generating the spectral break, and (3) a dependency of the energy of the spectral break on the interplanetary magnetic field magnitude and bow shock standoff distance.

  • First negative system of N2 + in aurora : Simultaneous space-borne and ground-based measurements and modeling results
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Annales Geophysicae. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 0992-7689 .- 1432-0576. ; 32:5, s. 499-506
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The auroral emission of the first negative system of N2 + at 427.8 nm is analyzed using simultaneous measurements from the ground with ALIS (Auroral Large Imaging System) and from space with optical (MAC) and particle (ESA) instruments of the Reimei satellite. The study has two main objectives. The first is validation of the absolute calibration of the ALIS and the Reimei MAC cameras. The other task is to evaluate different cross sections of the electron excitation of N2 + that are used for the modeling of the auroral 1N system emissions. The simultaneous measurements of the 427.8 nm emission by ALIS and Reimei imagers show excellent agreement, indicating that the calibration of the two instruments is correct. Comparison of the 427.8 nm emission intensity calculated using the incident electron flux measured by the Reimei particle instruments with intensities measured by the optical imagers show that the best match is reached with the cross section from Shemansky and Liu (2005).
