  • Nuclear astrophysics with radioactive ions at FAIR
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 665:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

  • Software-based data acquisition and processing for neutron detectors at European Spallation Source-early experience from four detector designs
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 13:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • European Spallation Source (ESS) will deliver neutrons at high flux for use in diverse neutron scattering techniques. The neutron source facility and the scientific instruments will be located in Lund, and the Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC), in Copenhagen. A number of detector prototypes are being developed at ESS together with its European in-kind partners, for example: SoNDe, Multi-Grid, Multi-Blade and Gd-GEM. These are all position sensitive detectors but use different techniques for the detection of neutrons. Except for digitization of electronics readout, all neutron data is anticipated to be processed in software. This provides maximum flexibility and adaptability and allows deep inspection of the raw data for commissioning which will reduce the risk of starting up new detector technologies. But it also requires development of high performance software processing pipelines and optimized and scalable processing algorithms. This report provides a description of the ESS system architecture for the neutron data path. Special focus is on the interface between the detectors and DMSC which is based on UDP over Ethernet links. The report also describes the software architecture for detector data processing and the tools we have developed, which have proven very useful for efficient early experimentation, and can be run on a single laptop. Processing requirements for the SoNDe, Multi-Grid, Multi-Blade and Ge-GEM detectors are presented and compared to event processing rates archived so far.

  • Incidence of asthma among workers exposed to sulfur dioxide and other irritant gases
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Respiratory Journal. - : European Respiratory Society (ERS). - 0903-1936 .- 1399-3003. ; 27:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to investigate whether repeated peak exposure (gassings) to sulphur dioxide (SO2) and other irritant gases increases the risk of new-onset asthma. A questionnaire was sent to 4,112 sulphite workers, of whom 1,919 completed the questionnaire and 396 completed the short-form questionnaire, which was sent out as a last reminder. A sample of 130 nonrespondents completed a telephone interview using the short-form questionnaire. The incidence of adult-onset, physician-diagnosed asthma during employment duration was analysed in relation to exposure to SO2 and gassings giving rise to respiratory symptoms. Incidence rates, as well as incidence rate ratios with 95% confidence interval (CI), were calculated. Further Cox regression models were used allowing assessment of hazard ratios (HR) stratified for sex and adjusted for atopy, smoking habits and age. The incidence rate for asthma among sulphite mill workers reporting gassings of SO2 was 6.2 out of 1,000 person-yrs, compared with 1.9 out of 1,000 person-yrs among subjects unexposed to SO2 and any gassings (HR (95% CI) 4.0 (2.1-7.7)). Among males reporting gassings to SO2, the HR (95% CI) for asthma was 5.8 (2.6-13) compared with unexposed males. In conclusion, repeated peak exposure to sulphur dioxide increased the incidence of asthma during work in sulphite pulp mills, which supports the hypothesis of irritant-induced asthma.

  • A Review of Polyolefin-Insulation Materials in High Voltage Transmission; From Electronic Structures to Final Products
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : Wiley. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review focuses on the use of polyolefins in high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cables and capacitors. A short description of the latest evolution and current use of HVDC cables and capacitors is first provided, followed by the basics of electric insulation and capacitor functions. Methods to determine dielectric properties are described, including charge transport, space charges, resistivity, dielectric loss, and breakdown strength. The semicrystalline structure of polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene is described, and the way it relates to the dielectric properties is discussed. A significant part of the review is devoted to describing the state of art of the modeling and prediction of electric or dielectric properties of polyolefins with consideration of both atomistic and continuum approaches. Furthermore, the effects of the purity of the materials and the presence of nanoparticles are presented, and the review ends with the sustainability aspects of these materials. In summary, the effective use of modeling in combination with experimental work is described as an important route toward understanding and designing the next generations of materials for electrical insulation in high-voltage transmission.

  • Bleeding time and concentrations of von Willebrand factor in patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Surgery. - 1102-4151 .- 1741-9271. ; 162:8, s. 627-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of impaired primary haemostasis in patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding.DESIGN: Prospective open study.SETTING: County hospital, Sweden.SUBJECTS: 160 consecutive patients admitted with haematemesis or melaena, or both.INTERVENTIONS: Diagnosis verified on admission by endoscopy. Consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), transfusion requirements, presence of chronic liver disease, and age were recorded.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Skin bleeding time was measured on admission with a modified Ivy method using the Simplate II bleeding time device; von Willebrand factor and routine haematological tests were analysed.RESULTS: In 31 of the patients (19%) the skin bleeding time was prolonged (over 10 minutes), and these patients also had a significantly lower packed cell volume on admission. In all patients the concentration of von Willebrand factor was increased which might explain why there was no significant difference in bleeding time between those who did and those who did not take NSAIDs.CONCLUSION: We recommend measurement of bleeding time in patients who present with haematemesis or melaena, or both, to detect those with impaired primary haemostasis.

  • Experimental haemorrhage and blood component transfusion in humans : no change in plasma concentration of thrombin-antithrombin complex and plasmin-antiplasmin complex.
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Thrombosis Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0049-3848 .- 1879-2472. ; 82:5, s. 409-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of haemorrhage and blood transfusion on primary haemostasis, coagulation and fibrinolysis was investigated in ten healthy male volunteers. Acute loss of 10% of the blood volume did not give any significant alteration in thrombin- antithrombin III (TAT) complex and plasmin-alpha 2-antiplasmin (PAP) complex levels compared with a control series. The skin bleeding time with the Simplate II device was not altered after the 10% blood loss. Acute loss of 10% of blood volume followed by transfusion of packed red cells or stored plasma did not resulted in any significant change in bleeding time, TAT and PAP complex levels. It could be concluded that a controlled haemorrhage does not give any detectable changes of the platelet dependent primary haemostasis, blood coagulation and fibrinolysis. Transfusion of one unit of packed red cells or stored plasma does not seem to adversely affect the haemostasis.

  • Helicobacter pylori and the relation to other risk factors in patients with acute bleeding peptic ulcer.
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5521 .- 1502-7708. ; 33:10, s. 1030-3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The influence of ulcer risk factors is well known in chronic peptic ulcer disease. In this study the risk factors were investigated in patients with peptic ulcer complicated by an acute bleeding episode.METHOD: In 106 consecutive patients with acute bleeding peptic ulcer, age, previous history of ulcer disease, presence of dyspeptic symptoms, smoking habits, consumption of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and haemoglobin concentration at admission were recorded. Helicobacter pylori infection was detected by means of two serologic tests in samples obtained at admission for the acute bleeding episode.RESULTS: Three-quarters of both gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer patients were shown to have H. pylori antibodies. NSAID use and smoking habits were similar in patients with and without H. pylori antibodies.CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that H. pylori infection, NSAID use, and smoking habits act as largely independent risk factors in patients with acute bleeding peptic ulcer.
