  • The "Spaghetti Project": the final identification guide to European Terebellidae (sensu lato) (Annelida, Terebelliformia)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Taxonomy. - : Museum National D'Histoire Naturelle. - 2118-9773. ; 782, s. 108-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is the conclusion of the "Spaghetti Project" aiming to revise French species of Terebellidae sensu lato (s.l.) belonging to the five families: Polycirridae, Telothelepodidae, Terebellidae sensu stricto (s.s.), Thelepodidae and Trichobranchidae. During this project, 41 species were observed, 31 of them new for science: eight species of Polycirridae, eleven species of Terebellidae s.s., three species of Thelepodidae and nine species of Trichobranchidae. We provide a comprehensive key for all European species of terebellids with a focus on the important diagnostic characters for each family. Finally, we discuss issues on taxonomy, biodiversity and cryptic and pseudo-cryptic species of polychaetes in European waters, based on results obtained during this project.

  • Phylogenetic position of Nerillidae and Aberranta (Polychaeta, Annelida), analysed by direct optimization of combined molecular and morphological data
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Zoologica Scripta. - : Wiley. - 0300-3256 .- 1463-6409. ; 34:3, s. 313-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phylogenetic position of the most speciose meiofaunal polychaete family, Nerillidae, has remained contentious. Recent hypotheses have generally focused on the fact that Nerillidae shares with Aciculata (a major polychaete subgroup) features such as compound chaetae, ventral buccal organ and short ventrolateral palps. Here we present the first phylogenetic analysis of Aciculata, together with Nerillidae, combining morphological and molecular data. We also include Aberrantidae, previously referred to or placed near to spiomorph polychaetes, but recently referred to Aciculata, possibly close to Nerillidae. The data sets of 24 terminals contain 53 morphological characters and nearly complete sequences of 18S rRNA. The sequences were analysed simultaneously with the morphological data by direct optimization in the program POY with a variety of parameter settings (costs of gaps: transversions: transitions). The various settings resulted in markedly different phylogenetic hypotheses, but on the basis of congruence (ILD) the results of two parameter settings were chosen. In all analyses, the three included nerillid species constituted a monophyletic group. Only two analyses provided fully resolved cladograms. The morphological analysis gave poor resolution and the position of the nerillids was equivocal. The two molecular-based cladograms (minimizing ILD) were also poorly resolved, but one provided a position for nerillids next to Eunice pennata and Nothria conchilega, from the subgroup Eunicida within Aciculata. The two cladograms of the combined analyses (minimizing ILD) were fully resolved and placed nerillids in a terminal position next to Aberranta sp., within a clade of eunicidan species. The study showed that the analytical conditions for the homology assignment of 18S rRNA strongly influenced the phylogenetic results. The various previous proposals on the phylogenetic position of the Nerillidae are reviewed, some of which are in accordance with the results of the present study.

  • A new species of Opisthosyllis (Polychaeta: Syllidae)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Zootaxa. - 1175-5334. ; 1068, s. 47-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Opisthosyllis leslieharrisae n. sp. is described from Santa Catalina Island, California. It differs from all other species of the genus in the following characters: dorsum densely covered by papillae in two sizes, and a distinct colour pattern consisting of white spots distributed transversally along the segments (only seen in live specimens) and dark red areas located on cirrophores, over the third segment, and in the middle of the second and the remainder segments (maintained in formalin fixed specimens). The new species is also characterized by the tooth located in the third quarter of the pharynx, and long spines on the blades of compound chaetae.

  • Two apparently unrelated groups of symbiotic annelids, Nautiliniellidae and Calamyzidae (Phyllodocida, Annelida), are a clade of derived chrysopetalid polychaetes
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Cladistics. - : Wiley. - 0748-3007. ; 29:6, s. 610-628
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nautiliniellidae Miura and Laubier, 1989 is a small family of marine polychaetes with 20 currently described species in 11 genera, most of which are known to live symbiotically in the mantle cavity of bivalves, mainly from cold seeps and hydrothermal vents, while Calamyzidae (Hartmann-Schroder, 1971) including only one described species, Calamyzas amphictenicola Arwidsson 1932 lives as an ectoparasite on ampharetid polychaetes in Swedish waters. Nautiliniellidae and Calamyzidae have both been considered to belong to Phyllodocida, but the few phylogenetic studies including these taxa have found their positions unstable. The internal relationships within Nautiliniellidae are also poorly understood. Using molecular information from both nuclear and mitochondrial genes and morphological data we assessed the systematic placement of Nautiliniellidae (seven species; collected from Pacific hydrothermal vents and cold seeps and one from Atlantic waters) and Calamyzas amphictenicola. Our results show that C. amphictenicola and Nautiliniellidae formed a well-supported clade that is nested within Chrysopetalidae, a free-living group of polychaetes. The chrysopetalid genus Vigtorniella Kiseleva 1992; a bacterial mat grazer found at methane seeps, anoxic basins and whalefalls, formed a paraphyletic grade with respect to the Nautiliniellidae-Calamyzas clade. The internal relationships within the Nautiliniellidae-Calamyzas clade as well as the relationships with their hosts are also examined. As a result we synonymize Calamyzidae and Nautiliniellidae with Chrysopetalidae, with the last as the oldest available family-group name. Within Chrysopetalidae we refer to the subfamilies Chrysopetalinae Ehlers 1864; Dysponetinae Aguado, Nygren & Rouse, herein; and Calamyzinae Hartmann-Schroder, 1971. Calamyzinae contains C. amphictenicola, all taxa formerly in Nautiliniellidae, and the chrysopetalid genus Vigtorniella. (C) The Willi Hennig Society 2013

  • Improved Proton Conductivity in Spark-Plasma Sintered Dense Ceramic BaZr0.5In0.5O3-delta
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Electrochemical and Solid State Letters. - : The Electrochemical Society. - 1099-0062 .- 1944-8775. ; 13:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spark-plasma sintering method was used to prepare dense proton conducting perovskite oxide BaZr0.5In0.5O3-delta. Analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data showed that the sample adopt the cubic crystal structure having the space group Pm3m. Thermogravimetric analysis of prehydrated samples showed significant mass losses beyond 300 degrees C due to loss of protons as water vapor. Scanning electron microscope images show that the grain size of the spark-plasma sintered dense sample was smaller than that of solid-state sintered porous sample. The highest total proton conductivity (2 X 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 450 degrees C) was found for dense spark-plasma sintered sample under wet H-2 than the samples prepared by other routes.

  • Genetics and assisted reproduction technology
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand. - : Wiley. ; 84:5, s. 463-473
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past 20 years, a significant improvement has been shown in the treatment for infertility in both women and men through the development of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Only donated sperm could be previously used for treatment; now oocytes can also be donated. Furthermore, the combination of IVF and ICSI with advanced genetic methods has made preimplantation genetic diagnosis possible for many genetic conditions. These methods enable genetic testing of the early human embryo by using only a single cell, one blastomere biopsied from the embryo, as the sample from which the diagnosis of many chromosome rearrangements and other inherited diseases can be made. It has also been established that a considerable proportion of infertility is caused by genetic defects, which have several implications for infertility treatment. The purpose of this review is to give a concise introduction on how genetics is involved in assisted reproduction technology to specialists who may not be working in this particular field of gynecology, but who would need some knowledge of this for proper care of their patients.

  • Safety issues in assisted reproduction technology: should ICSI patients have genetic testing before treatment? A practical proposition to help patient information
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Hum Reprod. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). ; 19:3, s. 472-476
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ICSI is a highly efficient treatment of male factor infertility and therefore increasingly used to treat infertile men successfully. However, when used to treat patients with a genetic cause for their infertility, there may be an increased risk for the offspring. Chromosome aberrations, Y chromosome microdeletions and CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) mutations alone may explain up to 25% of azoospermia and severe oligozoospermia. These genetic defects could be identified before treatment, in which case informed decisions could be made by the couple to be treated concerning the treatment, prenatal testing or preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Therefore, we propose that men with very low sperm counts (<5 x 10(6)/ml) considering ICSI should always be informed of the possibility of genetic testing. The information should include a precise statement of the implications of the results for the patient, his family and his offspring, and reassurance that a decision to test or not to test, or the subsequent test results will not be used as a reason for withholding treatment. Testing should always remain voluntary, and the couples themselves should decide whether or not they choose to be tested. If an abnormality is identified, patients should be referred to specialist genetic counselling.

  • Attitudes towards and management of single embryo transfer among Nordic IVF doctors
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-6349 .- 1600-0412. ; 86:10, s. 1222-1230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. The objective of this study was to investigate the attitudes towards and management of single embryo transfer (SET) among Nordic in vitro fertilisation (IVF) doctors, and to present the rate of SET and multiple pregnancies in the different countries. Methods. A questionnaire was sent to all IVF doctors in the Nordic countries (n=198, 78.5% responded). Pregnancy rates, SET and multiple births rates were extracted from registries. Main outcome measure was attitudes and management of SET. Results. Almost all doctors thought that a twin pregnancy compared unfavourably to a singleton. A twin rate >10% was acceptable for 5% of Swedish doctors. Corresponding figures for Finnish, Danish and Norwegian doctors were 21, 35 and 35%, respectively. For a woman <36 years, performing her first cycle and with two good quality embryos, almost all doctors would recommend SET. For a woman =36 years in a similar situation, SET would be recommended only in Sweden and Finland. The pregnancy rate per embryo transfer (ET), the SET rate 2003, the multiple birth rate, and the estimated SET rate 2004 were 33.3, 21.5, 22.7 and 25% (Denmark), 31.3, 43.4, 14 and 51% (Finland), 40.5, 10.5, 26.5 and 16% (Iceland), 30.6, 18, 25.2 and 26% (Norway), and 35.3, 55.1, 11.8 and 71% (Sweden). Conclusions. The SET and multiple birth rates reflect the attitudes of Nordic IVF doctors to SET and multiple births well. When introducing SET, the attitude of the IVF doctor seems to be important. © 2007 Taylor & Francis.

  • Reliability and factor structure of the Multidimensional Pain Inventory--Swedish Language Version (MPI-S).
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Pain. - : LWW. - 0304-3959 .- 1872-6623. ; 75:1, s. 101-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The psychological assessment of chronic pain is often accomplished using questionnaires such as the (West Haven-Yale) Multidimensional Pain Inventory ((WHY)MPI) which is constructed to capture the multidimensionality of chronic pain. The (WHY)MPI theoretically originates from behavioural and cognitive behavioural theories of pain. It is divided into three parts and measures psychosocial and behavioural consequences of pain. This questionnaire has displayed satisfactory psychometric properties and translations of the original English version into German and Dutch have been demonstrated to be reliable and valid. The aim of this study was to test the reliability and factor structure of a Swedish translation of the (WHY)MPI, the MPI-S, and also to test the generalisability of the factor structure found for the (WHY)MPI. We performed analyses of internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha, and carried out a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) employing LISREL-8 on a population of 682 patients suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain. Test-retest analysis was accomplished on a sub-sample of 54 individuals taken from the aforementioned population. For sections 1 and 2 of the MPI-S the overall reliability and stability were good, and after the exclusion of four items, the factor structure was similar to other versions of the MPI. For section 3, despite removal of five questions, the proposed factor structure could not be replicated. This part of the inventory is designed to measure the extent of different types of activities, and our results suggest that this section may only be used for assessing general activity level. We conclude that, with a few adjustments, the analyses yielded satisfactory results for sections 1 and 2 of the MPI-S regarding its factor structure, reliability and generalisability. For section 3 the hypothesised factor structure could not be confirmed.

  • Depression, anxiety, and antidepressant treatment in women: association with in vitro fertilization outcome
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Fertility and Sterility. - : Elsevier BV. - 0015-0282 .- 1556-5653. ; 105:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To investigate associations between depression, anxiety, and antidepressants before in vitro fertilization (1VF) and IVF cycle outcomes, including pregnancy, live birth, and miscarriage. Patient(s): Nulliparous women undergoing their first 1VF cycle recorded in the Swedish Quality Register of Assisted Reproduction, January 2007 to December 2012 (n = 23,557). Main Outcome Measure(s): Associations between diagnoses of depression/anxiety, antidepressants, and IVF cycle outcome evaluated using logistic regression to produce adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and 950/o confidence intervals (CI). Result(s): In total, 4.40/o of women had been diagnosed with depression/anxiety and/or dispensed antidepressants before their IVF first cycle. The odds for pregnancy and live birth were decreased (n = 1,044; AOR = 0.86; 950/0 CI, 0.75-0.98; and AOR = 0.83; 950/o CI, 0.720.96, respectively). For women with a prescription for a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) only (n = 829), no statistically significant associations were found. Women with non-SSRI antidepressants (n = 52) were at reduced odds of pregnancy (AOR = 0.41; 950/0 CI, 0.21-0.80) and live birth (AOR = 0.27; 950/o CI, 0.11-0.68). Women with a depression/anxiety diagnosis with no antidepressant (n = 164) also had reduced odds of pregnancy (AOR = 0.58; 950/0 CI, 0.41-0.82) and live birth (AOR = 0.60; 95% CI, 0.41-0.89). Among the women who became pregnant (39.70/0, there were no statistically significant associations between exposure and miscarriage except for the women taking non-SSRI antidepressants (AOR = 3.56; 950/o CI, 1.06-11.9). Conclusion(s): A diagnosis of depression/anxiety and/or treatment with antidepressants before IVF was associated with slightly reduced odds of pregnancy and live birth. Women with the presence of depression/anxiety without antidepressants had a more pronounced reduction in odds, implying that the underlying disorder is important for the observed association.
