  • The Rhetoric of Financial Literacy
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Interdisciplinary Economics. - : SAGE Publications. - 0260-1079 .- 2321-5305. ; 24:1, s. 55-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns the use of rhetoric strategies in call for improved financial literacy and financial education. The article combines a presentation of how rhetoric is used in financial literacy improvement initiatives and a discussion on the benefits of including a rhetoric framework in future studies of financial literacy and of finance economy in everyday life. The examples are sampled from the OECD website IGFE and from country-specific initiatives and programmes for improving levels of financial literacy in the general public. The central issue of the article is how the notions of objectivity and rationality together are prevailing as a general theme in the current discourse of the field. The discussion includes how information on financial matters is presented in programme initiatives from mainly an objective and rational perspective and in this sense even may be seen as being ‘anti-rhetoric’. The notion of information accessibility does in this sense become a question of individual activity where the possibility to take ‘financial charge’ of the situation is linked to being able to process ‘objective’ information about financial markets and instruments. The rhetoric patterns of perceived rationality in the studied initiatives can further be seen as linked to personal morality and the incentive to be financially literate in order to control one’s personal economy.

  • The Framing of Corporate Social Responsibility and the Globalization of National Business Systems : A Longitudinal Case Study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Ethics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0167-4544 .- 1573-0697. ; 93:4, s. 653-669
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The globalization movement in recent decades has meant rapid growth in trade, financial transactions, and cross-country ownership of economic assets. In this article, we examine how the globalization of national business systems has influenced the framing of corporate social responsibility (CSR). This is done using text analysis of CEO letters appearing in the annual reports of 15 major corporations in Sweden during a period of transformational change. The results show that the discourse about CSR in the annual reports has changed from a national and communitarian view of social responsibility (cf. a negotiated view of CSR) toward an international and individualistic view of social responsibility (cf. a self-regulating view of CSR). The article contributes theoretically (1) by adding a national–global dimension to previous conceptualizations of CSR and (2) by showing that the rise of CSR discourse and activities in the last 10 years does not have to imply an increased commitment and interest in corporate responsibility per se, only that there are increased societal expectations that corporations should develop the capability to act more independently as moral agents.

  • Banken, kunden och pengarna : En diskussion av kritikens roll i en historisk undersökning av marknadsföringstexter och -diskurser
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Kritiska text- och diskursstudier. - Huddinge : Södertörns högskola. - 9789188663344 ; , s. 179-199
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a critical study of advertisements mainly from banks in Swedish daily newspapers over a period from 1870 to the 1970s. The advertisements aim for the general public and promote savings and loans services and products. The questions of the study include what is pro- moted to whom and how in the advertisements? Also, how is individual money management framed and presented over time in these marketing texts? Besides a presentation of the main results from the study, its critical aim is continuously discussed from three different perspectives of analysis: the textual, practice-oriented and institutional levels. The analysis shows a development from non-addressing of an advertisement reader in the period from 1870 to the 1920s to direct addressing of the reader and also increased mentioning of specific reader groups in the later 20th century period. The advertisements also show a change from simply stating the banks' services and products to actively arguing and invoking direct strategies of persuasion by the use of both verbal and graphic text elements. The critical discussion of the article states the relevance of focusing on the intermingled relations between the textual, practice-oriented and institutional levels in order to relate the results to the socio-economic contexts of the advertisements in their time periods.

  • Corporate Social Responsibility : A Three Country Comparative Study of the Evolution of a Corporate Discourse Over Time
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IABS 2005 Proceedings. ; , s. 160-165
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on comparative research on how textual representations of issues related to corporate social responsibility (CSR) in corporate annual reports from Sweden, Canada and the Netherlands have changed over time. The results show a substantial increase on a number of topics that can be linked to the general CSR-discourse in the 2001 sample in comparison to the 1991 and 1981 samples. The rise in the CSR-discourse appears to be related to a drop in other discourses related to issues of social responsibility regarding the social, economic and political development of a company’s native country.

  • Corporate Social Responsibility : The Problem of Securing External Legitimacy in a Globalized World
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: 20th EGOS Colloquium July 1-3, 2004 : The Organization as a Set of Dynamic Relationships.  Ljubljana University, Slovenia. ; , s. 1-24
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the results from a textual analysis of "Letters from the CEOs" in leading Swedish corporations. The sample consists of letters from annual reports for the years of 1981, 1991 and 2001. The purpose of the paper is to discuss how the textual representations of issues related to corporate social responsibility (CSR) have changed over the period. The results show, not surprisingly, a substantial increase on a number of topics that can be linked to the general CSR-discourse in the 2001 sample. But the rise of a CSR-discourse is related to a drop of another discourse related to social responsibility, in which the CEOs used to comment upon the social, economic and political development of their native country. It is therefore doubtful to claim that business leaders of today feel a larger social responsibility than in the past. In the end section of this paper we discuss the consequences of the shift of responsibilities from a narrower national arena towards a globally dispersed community of stakeholders. It is concluded that the CSR discourse, firmly rooted in a self- regulation philosophy, have not yet emerged as an influential movement in Sweden that affects the overall business conduct in a more substantial manner. The CSR-philosophy seems so far to be a more liberating than restraining factor for those Swedish companies who have moved their operations across the national borders.
