    • Environmental change has a human dimension, and has had so for at least the last 10 000 years. The prehistoric impact of people on the Arctic landscape has occasionally left visible traces, such as house and field structures. More often than not, however, the only evidence available is at the microscopic or geochemical level, such as fossil insect and seed assemblages or changes in the physical and chemical properties of soils and sediments. These records are the subject of SEAD, a multidisciplinary database and software project currently underway at Umeå University, Sweden, which aims to create an online database and set of tools for investigating these traces, as part of an international research infrastructure for palaeoecology and environmental archaeology.

    • Temporal variation in natural selection has profound effects on the evolutionary trajectories of populations. One potential source of variation in selection is that differences in thermal reaction norms and temperature influence the relative phenology of interacting species. We manipulated the phenology of the butterfly herbivore Anthocharis cardamines relative to genetically identical populations of its host plant, Cardamine pratensis, and examined the effects on butterfly preferences and selection acting on the host plant. We found that butterflies preferred plants at an intermediate flowering stage, regardless of the timing of butterfly flight relative to flowering onset of the population. Consequently, the probability that plant genotypes differing in timing of flowering should experience a butterfly attack depended strongly on relative phenology. These results suggest that differences in spring temperature influence the direction of herbivore-mediated selection on flowering phenology, and that climatic conditions can influence natural selection also when phenotypic preferences remain constant.

    • This paper presents a joint large eddy simulation and laser diagnostic investigation of premixed turbulent low swirl flames. A lean premixed methane/air mixture, of the equivalence ratio 0.60-0.66, is injected from a 50 mm diameter low swirl burner to a low speed co-flowing air at room temperature and pressure. The level-set G-equation is employed to simulate the inner layer flame front. Flamelet chemistry is used to determine the flame properties in the reactive zones. Mixing and heat transfer in the post-flame zone down-stream are modeled using transport equations. In addition to large eddy simulation, simultaneous 2-D laser induced fluorescence of OH and 2-D particle image velocimetry are used to characterize the basic flame structure. Laser Doppler velocimetry is employed to further analyze the flow velocity along the central axis above the burner, and 2-D filtered Rayleigh scattering is used to measure the temperature field in the lower part of the flame. A bowl-shaped, highly wrinkled turbulent flame is stabilized at a position about one-half diameter above the burner. The flame consists of two distinct parts; around the burner axis, a premixed flame with uniform mixture fraction is stabilized in the low speed flow region induced by the inflow swirl; off the axis of the burner, a stratified lean premixed flame is found in the shear layer of the flow field. Flame holes (local extinction) owing to overly lean mixtures are observed in the off-axis lean stratified part of the flame. A unified level-set G-equation is developed to model the flame holes. The basic flow and flame structure from the model simulations are compared to the laser diagnostic measurements; the height of flame stabilization (lift-off height), the mean temperature profile, and the mean axial and radial velocity components together with rms velocity components are in fairly good agreement with measurement data. © 2006 The Combustion Institute.     • Industrial high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanners have recently been installed at several sawmills worldwide for the description of roundwood interior features and external log shape. These CT scanners represent a technological advancement for sawmill businesses that open a way to higher volume and value yields and new production planning strategies. This paper will present an indicative study of innovative use of non-destructive CT log data in a Swedish softwood sawmill, linking high-quality information of the wood material along the wood-value chain. Sawn timber was observed throughout the sawmill process line, i.e. from the log yard through the sawmill process until grading after the timber was dried. Before sawing, the CT scanner scanned the logs and calculated knot measurements from the 3D CT log data of simulated value-optimized center yield. A corresponding set of knot measurements were later calculated from the camera-based grading of the dried timber. Only considering knots from the two sets of measurements, the sawn timber was automatically given a quality assessment based on CT data, by camera-based scanning data, and by manual visual grading for reference. Partial least squares regression was used to create prediction models by correlating the two sets of knot measurements with the automatically determined grade from the dry-sorting. The prediction models tested increased the grading consistency between the grading based on CT data of virtual planks and based on camera data of the same planks. Furthermore, a traceability algorithm was tested as a tool to generate large data sets for future studies.
