  • Multivariate genetic analysis of learning and early reading development
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scientific Studies of Reading. - : Routledge. - 1088-8438 .- 1532-799X. ; 17:3, s. 224-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The genetic factor structure of a range of learning measures was explored in twin children, recruited in preschool and followed to Grade 2 (N = 2,084). Measures of orthographic learning and word reading were included in the analyses to determine how these patterned with the learning processes. An exploratory factor analysis of the genetic correlations among the variables indicated a three-factor model. Vocabulary tests loaded on the first factor, the Grade 2 measures of word reading and orthographic learning, plus preschool letter knowledge, loaded on the second, and the third was characterized by tests of verbal short-term memory. The three genetic factors correlated, with the second (print) factor showing the most specificity. We conclude that genetically influenced learning processes underlying print–speech integration, foreshadowed by preschool letter knowledge, have a degree of independence from genetic factors affecting spoken language. We also argue that the psychology and genetics of associative learning be afforded a more central place in studies of reading (dis)ability and suggest some links to molecular studies of the genetics of learning.

  • Financing the newsvendor with preferential credit : bank vs. manufacturer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-7543 .- 1366-588X. ; 59:14, s. 4228-4247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines how preferential credit based on retailers’ credit line impacts on capital-constraint retailer’s operational decisions. We consider a condition of loan competition when banks and manufacturers offer preferential credit to capital-constraint retailers in the newsvendor model. Different credit lines and discounted rates of preferential credit mainly involve in retailers’ exogenous collateral and risk preference of banks and manufacturers in our model. We investigate impacts of bank financing, trade credit, and portfolio credit (financing from both bank credit and trade credit with different ratios) on retailer’s inventory decision with different cases that the retailer’s financing amounts exceed credit line or not. We derive the equilibrium wholesale price, expected sale price, and order quantity when retailers face with different conditions of collaterals and institutes’ risk preferences facing with market risk. A debt-financed retailer favours items with trade credit compared to bank financing, especially in conditions when its sourcing demand is great and when it finances from high-risk preference institutes. Retailer prefers to using the loan with high trade credit ratio when he opts portfolio credit conditions.

  • Utilizing customer satisfaction in ranking prediction for personalized cloud service selection
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Decision Support Systems. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-9236 .- 1873-5797. ; 93, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the rapid development of cloud computing, cloud service has become an indispensable component of modern information systems where quality of service (QoS) has a direct impact on the system's performance and stability. While scholars have concentrated their efforts on the monitoring and evaluation of QoS in cloud computing, other service selection characteristics have been neglected, such as the scarcity of evaluation data and various customer needs. In this paper, we present a ranking-oriented prediction method that will assist in the process of discovering the cloud service candidates that have the highest customer satisfaction. This approach encompasses two basic functions: ranking similarity estimation and cloud service ranldng prediction that takes into account customer's preference and expectation. The comparative experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms other competing methods.

  • Emulating future neurotechnology using magic
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Consciousness and Cognition. - : Elsevier BV. - 1053-8100. ; 107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent developments in neuroscience and artificial intelligence have allowed machines to decode mental processes with growing accuracy. Neuroethicists have speculated that perfecting these technologies may result in reactions ranging from an invasion of privacy to an increase in self-understanding. Yet, evaluating these predictions is difficult given that people are poor at forecasting their reactions. To address this, we developed a paradigm using elements of performance magic to emulate future neurotechnologies. We led 59 participants to believe that a (sham) neurotechnological machine could infer their preferences, detect their errors, and reveal their deep-seated attitudes. The machine gave participants randomly assigned positive or negative feedback about their brain's supposed attitudes towards charity. Around 80% of participants in both groups provided rationalisations for this feedback, which shifted their attitudes in the manipulated direction but did not influence donation behaviour. Our paradigm reveals how people may respond to prospective neurotechnologies, which may inform neuroethical frameworks.

  • Online to offline (O2O) service recommendation method based on multi -dimensional similarity measurement
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Decision Support Systems. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-9236 .- 1873-5797. ; 103, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the rapid development of information technology, consumers are able to search for and buy services or products online, and then consume them in an offline store. This emerging ecommerce model is called online to offline (O2O) service, which has attracted business and academic attention. The large number of O2O services on the Internet creates a scalability problem, creating massive but highly sparse matrices relating customers to items purchased. In this paper, we proposed a novel O2O service recommendation method based on multidimensional similarity measurements. This approach encompasses three similarity measures: collaborative similarity, preference similarity and trajectory similarity. Experimental results show that a combination of multiple similarity measures performs better than any one single similarity measure. We also find that trajectory similarity performs better than the rating-based similarity metrics (collaborative similarity and preference similarity) in sparse matrices.

  • Literacy acquisition influences children's rapid automatized naming
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Developmental Science. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 1363-755X .- 1467-7687. ; 21:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has established that learning to read improves children's performance on reading‐related phonological tasks, including phoneme awareness (PA) and nonword repetition. Few studies have investigated whether literacy acquisition also promotes children's rapid automatized naming (RAN). We tested the hypothesis that literacy acquisition should influence RAN in an international, longitudinal population sample of twins. Cross‐lagged path models evaluated the relationships among literacy, PA, and RAN across four time points from pre‐kindergarten through grade 4. Consistent with previous research, literacy showed bidirectional relationships with reading‐related oral language skills. We found novel evidence for an effect of earlier literacy on later RAN, which was most evident in children at early phases of literacy development. In contrast, the influence of earlier RAN on later literacy was predominant among older children. These findings imply that the association between these two related skills is moderated by development. Implications for models of reading development and for dyslexia research are discussed.

  • Green supply chain management under capital constraint
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Economics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-5273 .- 1873-7579. ; 215, s. 3-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To determine how carbon emissions reduction affects supply chain operations and financing decisions, this paper examines a green supply chain, which consists of one manufacturer (playing the leading role) and one capital-constrained retailer; in this supply chain, bank financing and trade credit financing are viable. This research explores the retailer's optimal order quantity, the manufacturer's optimal wholesale price, the optimal level of carbon emissions (for both bank financing and trade credit financing), and the design of the contract to coordinate the supply chain. We find that the supply chain achieves a win-win outcome in terms of production quantity and emissions reduction when the manufacturer invests in emissions reduction. In addition, we find that a supply chain with a contract outperforms a non-contract supply chain in production quantity and emissions reduction. Furthermore, the effect is more remarkable when trade credit financing is viable.
