  • Forskarnas galleri #4 : Förnuft eller känsla? Fakta, forskning och föreställningar
  • 2018

  • Theoretical studies of 17-beta-estradiol-imprinted prepolymerization mixtures : insights concerning the roles of cross-linking and functional monomers in template complexation and polymerization
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0888-5885 .- 1520-5045. ; 52:39, s. 13965-13970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, computational methods were employed in efforts to elucidate physical mechanisms underlying the ligand selectivity of polymeric sorbents produced through the molecular imprinting of 17-beta-estradiol. Previous computational and experimental studies had identified candidate systems applicable to the development of synthetic polymeric receptors for the detection and possible removal of pollutants with endocrine-disrupting properties. Here we present a series of comprehensive molecular dynamics studies of candidate molecular imprinting prepolymerization systems. The results from the studies highlight the role of the cross-linker and the importance of the interplay between functionalities of the various monomers employed in template complexation. The significance of these results for future studies is discussed.

  • The effect of anatomical noise on perception of low contrast in intra-oral radiographs : an in vitro study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology. - London, United Kingdom : British Institute of Radiology. - 0250-832X .- 1476-542X. ; 45:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Radiographic images suffer from varying amounts of noise. The most studied and discussed of these is random noise. However, recent research has shown that the projected anatomy contributes substantially to noise, especially when detecting low-contrast objects in the images. Our aim, therefore, was to evaluate the extent to which overprojected anatomical noise affects the detection of low-contrast objects in intra-oral images. Methods: Our study used four common sensor models. With each sensor, we took four series of images, three series with and one series without an anatomical phantom present. In each series, we exposed a low-contrast phantom at 18 different exposure times using a standardized method. 4 observers evaluated all 288 images. Results: The low-contrast characteristics differed substantially when imaging low contrast on a homogeneous background compared with imaging low contrast when an anatomical phantom was present. For three of the sensors, optimal exposure times for low-contrast imaging were found, while the fourth sensor displayed a completely different behaviour. Conclusions: Calibrating the low-contrast properties of an imaging system using low-contrast objects on a homogeneous background is not recommended. On an anatomical background, low-contrast properties are completely different, and these will mimic the clinical situation much more closely, directing the operator how to best use the system. There is a clear demand for further research on this subject.

  • Does smoking cessation affect postoperative healing following oral surgery among smokers? - a systematic review.
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BMC Oral Health. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1472-6831. ; 24:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: It is well documented that smokers suffer increased risk of postoperative complications after medical surgery, for example delayed healing and increased risk of infection. It is also known that preoperative smoking cessation can reduce the risk of these complications. Because of this there are guidelines regarding preoperative smoking cessation in non-oral medical surgery. There are however no specific guidelines regarding oral surgical procedures, such as surgical extractions, dentoalveolar surgery, periodontal surgery, or dental implantation. Nevertheless, it is common that dentists and oral surgeons recommend smoking cessation pre to oral surgical procedures. The aim with this systematic review was to see if there are any evidence in the literature, supporting preoperative smoking cessation in oral surgical procedures.METHODS: A systematic search of the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane was conducted to identify studies addressing the effect of preoperative smoking cessation in oral surgical procedures. Included publications were subjected to preidentified inclusion criterion. Six examiners performed the eligibility and quality assessment of relevant studies. Risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I and RoB 2. Certainty assessment was carried out using GRADE.RESULTS: The initial search resulted in 2255 records, and after removal of 148 duplicates, 16 articles met an acceptable level of relevance. These were read in full text, whereof 12 articles were excluded, due to different intervention, outcome, or study design than stated in the review protocol. One study remained with moderate risk of bias and three were excluded due to high risk of bias.CONCLUSION: This systematic review could not determine the effect of smoking cessation pre to oral surgical procedures, in smokers. This indicates lack of knowledge in the effects of smoking cessation. We also conclude a lack of knowledge in how to design smoking cessation in the most effective way.

  • The challenge of creativity : Using picturebook sequencing for creative writing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Exploring Challenging Picturebooks in Education. - London : Taylor & Francis Group. - 9781000413717 - 9780367856250 - 9781003013952 ; , s. 229-245
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the aim to develop good teaching practices with regard to language development and literary competence the chapter demonstrates how sequences of pictures – in this case two sets of illustrations by Russian illustrator Igor Oleynnikov – were used in two different but related ways in the teaching of literature and language: to create a better understanding of how literature works, and to stimulate creativity. In a first workshop, the focus was on a Russian version of “Snow White,” called “The Dead Tsarevna and Seven Bogatyrs.” The task, assigned to groups of four, was to arrange the randomly presented illustrations in such a way that the sequence made narrative sense. The second workshop was devoted to Oleynnikov’s illustrations to “Judges.” The workshops were carried out with two different cohorts of students, one in secondary, and one tertiary education. In the chapter it is shown that each of the interpretive, collaborative, and creative stages represents a learning opportunity that engages the students’ linguistic and literary competence, as well as their aesthetic sensibilities and metacognitive faculties.

  • Does gender matter? The association between different digital media activities and adolescent well-being
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2458. ; 22, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:Previous research on the relationship between social media use and well-being in adolescents has yielded inconsistent results. We addressed this issue by examining the association between various digital media activities, including a new and differentiated measure of social media use, and well-being (internalizing symptoms) in adolescent boys and girls.Method:The sample was drawn from the four cross-sectional surveys from the Öckerö project (2016–2019) in eight municipalities in southern Sweden, consisting of 3957 adolescents in year 7 of compulsory education, aged 12–13. We measured the following digital media activities: playing games and three different activities of social media use (chatting, online sociability, and self-presentation). Our outcome measure was internalizing symptoms. Hypotheses were tested with linear regression analysis. Results:Social media use and playing games were positively associated with internalizing symptoms. The effect of social media use was conditional on gender, indicating that social media use was only associated with internalizing symptoms for girls. Of the social media activities, only chatting and self-presentation (posting information about themselves) were positively associated with internalizing symptoms. Self-presentation was associated with internalizing symptoms only for girls. Conclusion:Our study shows the importance of research going beyond studying the time spent on social media to examine how different kinds of social media activities are associated with well-being. Consistent with research in psychology, our results suggest that young girls posting information about themselves (i.e. self-presentation) might be especially vulnerable to display internalizing symptoms.
