  • An evaluation of solar powered irrigation as carbon offset projects
  • 2016
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Carbon offsets have been developed as one tool to incentivise investments by developed nations in climate change mitigation activities in developing countries. The carbon offsets can be used towards the countries’ own mitigation targets but are also meant to benefit developing countries by providing a pathway to clean development.Photovoltaic water pumping (PVWP) technology is a solution to use PV for irrigation, which can be used to restore degraded grasslands and help farmers adapt to climate change. Restoration of degraded grasslands increases the production of grass and will therefore increase the amount of carbon in the soil, a process that may mitigate climate change. However, poor farmers often have limited access to irrigation technology and this thesis assesses how carbon offsets may bring revenues to increase adaption of PVWP technology in remote areas of the Chinese grasslands.PV modules can be used to mitigate climate change in different ways; the most common is to produce electricity to replace fossil fuel power capacity. The novelty of this thesis is that it assesses the alternative mitigation possibilities for the PVWP project proposed here. Further, consideration of water constraints that limit the applicability of the technology and a framework to assess the trade-offs between potential downstream water impacts and environmental co-benefits of the project add to the novelty of this thesis. Policy barriers for the project will also be considered. Used to restore severely degraded grasslands, PVWP projects show high carbon sequestration potential and successfully compete with grid electricity as carbon offset projects. A case is analysed and it shows that the carbon market could play a role in increasing the feasibility of PVWP projects. However, water issues make project implementation very site-specific and some indicators to determine feasibility is proposed to be blue water availability, evaporation recycling ratio and water productivity. Water use must also be looked at with respect to climate, food and energy security, calling for a nexus approach to evaluate the project suitability. In May 2016, grassland management projects are excluded from the Clean Development Mechanism to the Kyoto Protocol, and this limits project implementation to the voluntary markets.

  • Image Based Visualization Methods for Meteorological Data
  • 2004
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Visualization is the process of constructing methods, which are able to synthesize interesting and informative images from data sets, to simplify the process of interpreting the data. In this thesis a new approach to construct meteorological visualization methods using neural network technology is described. The methods are trained with examples instead of explicitely designing the appearance of the visualization. This approach is exemplified using two applications. In the fist the problem to compute an image of the sky for dynamic weather, that is taking account of the current weather state, is addressed. It is a complicated problem to tie the appearance of the sky to a weather state. The method is trained with weather data sets and images of the sky to be able to synthesize a sky image for arbitrary weather conditions. The method has been trained with various kinds of weather and images data. The results show that this is a possible method to construct weather visaualizations, but more work remains in characterizing the weather state and further refinement is required before the full potential of the method can be explored. This approach would make it possible to synthesize sky images of dynamic weather using a fast and efficient empirical method. In the second application the problem of computing synthetic satellite images form numerical forecast data sets is addressed. In this case a mode is trained with preclassified satellite images and forecast data sets to be able to synthesize a satellite image representing arbitrary conditions. The resulting method makes it possible to visualize data sets from numerical weather simulations using synthetic satellite images, but could also be the basis for algorithms based on a preliminary cloud classification.

  • Two Essays on Valuation of Marine Resources: Applications to Sweden
  • 2004
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Paper 1: Historical records show that the stock density of coastal cod (Gadus morhua) in the waters off the Swedish west coast is extremely low. In 2001 the stock size was two percent of the size in the 1970s. Scarce fish resources imply conflicting interests among various user groups, and sustainable management requires necessary trade-offs to be made. An economic evaluation of the social benefits of the use of these fish resources is valuable for coastal managers in their decision making process. In this paper, we apply the contingent valuation method to estimate the willingness to pay for an increased cod stock in the coastal waters of the Swedish west coast. Also, we test the effects of using different elicitation formats and payment vehicles in the valuation process. We find that the dichotomous choice format yields higher values than the open-ended format and that the formats are statistically different. Surprisingly, we find no statistical difference between payment vehicles (tax versus license fee). The median values range from SEK 150 to 250 depending on estimation method, and mean values range from SEK 230 to 900. A relatively modest aggregation procedure gives an aggregate WTP equal to SEK 704 million. This is a reflection of the public concern for the coastal cod population in the Swedish waters. Paper 2: The marine environment provides many goods and services dependent upon the quality of coastal waters. In this paper, we represent water quality by three different attributes, fish stock level, bathing water quality, and biodiversity level, and carry out a choice experiment among residents on the Swedish west coast to estimate the economic benefits of improved coastal water quality. We analyze data using the mixed multinomial logit model and explore various distributional assumptions and derive individual-specific parameters. Our results confirm heterogeneous preferences for these attributes and show that respondents have high levels of environmental concern and that substantial values are at stake. The most urgent action according to our findings is firstly to prevent further depletion of marine biodiversity and secondly to improve Swedish cod stocks.
